CPB shutdown: PBS, NPR can still get funding; here's how
This comes after President Donald Trump's targeting of public media, stating that they spread political and cultural views antithetical to those the United States should be espousing.
With CPB shutting down, many are worried about NPR and PBS shuttering too, given that the entity helps fund both.
However, most of CPB's funds go to over 1500 local public radio and television stations around the US. So, what are the other sources of funding for PBS and NPR, and will they survive CPB's closure? Let's find out.
NPR funding sources
National Public Radio (NPR) states that it gets only 1 percent of its funding from the federal government. Member station fees make up 30 percent of its funding.
Corporate sponsorship is responsible for 36 per cent of its funding, while 'Core and other programming fees' make up 30 per cent. Cash and financial asset contribution is directly responsible for 13 per cent of NPR's budget, and this includes the 1 percent from federal government.
Other revenues make up 7 per cent, the NPR Foundation board-designated and endowment support makes up for 6 per cent, while 5 per cent of the budget comes from satellite interconnection and distribution, and 3 per cent is from return on short-term investments and net.
NPR states that it separately gets some CPB funding to manage the Public Radio Satellite System, used by various public radio content producers and stations.
PBS funding sources
The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), meanwhile, gets funding from the CPB. However, it has other sources too, including member station dues, pledge drives, as well as donations from private foundations and individual citizens.
They employ a set of standards to ensure the programing then carried is free from influence from the source of funding.

"Harvard's formal partnership with a CCP-controlled school to train their future leaders raises serious concerns about the CCP's influence in American institutions," said Rep. Moolenaar. "We are committed to uncovering the full extent of these relationships to ensure transparency and protect national interests." The revelations come at a time when Harvard is already under scrutiny. The university is reportedly considering a USD 500 million payout to resolve a standoff with the Biden administration over campus anti-Semitism complaints and controversial DEI policies. But lawmakers argue that financial settlements cannot undo the damage caused by Harvard's entanglement with entities implicated in human rights abuses. In April, The Free Beacon exposed Harvard's past training of members from the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, a CCP paramilitary group sanctioned by the U.S. for its role in the genocide of Uyghur Muslims. That report prompted congressional leaders to threaten Harvard's tax-exempt Harvard faces a deadline of August 7 to provide Congress with all records relating to its interactions with CCP-affiliated bodies, including any financial or material pressure mounts, the question isn't just whether Harvard broke federal laws or ethical boundaries, but whether one of America's most prestigious universities has willingly served the interests of a foreign authoritarian power.

The Post cited an unnamed source familiar with the exhibit plans and reported that the display was taken down following a 'content review that the Smithsonian agreed to undertake following pressure from the White House to remove an art museum director'. The museum's decision to remove the display swiftly drew backlash, with critics of Trump calling the development the latest capitulation to the whims of an authoritarian president. 'You can run, but you cannot hide from the judgment of history,' Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Friday. 'So, here's my message to the president: no matter what exhibits you try to distort, the American people will never forget that you were impeached – not once, but twice," he added.
