Ministry Finalising Law To Regulate Museum Activities
He said the law, expected to be tabled by November this year, aims to provide a clear legal framework to ensure museums are managed effectively and sustainably.
According to Aaron, the ministry aims to develop museums that are not only educational but also transformative spaces fostering creativity, critical thinking, and a deeper appreciation of our shared humanity.
'The ministry is committed to ensuring that our museums embody the values of inclusivity, accessibility, sustainability, and diversity,' he said.
'We will work closely with the Department of Museums to develop and implement strategies that align with these principles, which are enhancing accessibility, promoting inclusive narratives, implementing sustainable practices and encouraging community participation in museum activities and decision-making processes," he said during his opening speech at the Malaysia International Museums Day Seminar 2025 here, today.
Meanwhile, at a press conference, Department of Museums director-general Datuk Kamarul Baharin A. Kasim said the proposed law includes the establishment of a Museum Council, which would serve as an advisory and supervisory body for the creation and operation of museum institutions nationwide.
He said that while the National Heritage Act 2005 (Act 645) addresses matters concerning heritage sites, monuments, and both tangible and intangible heritage, it does not comprehensively regulate overall museum policy.
'This law is being drafted in accordance with international standards, taking into account practices from other countries. We also aim to introduce a rating system and regulate the operations of new museums, particularly private ones, that may present narratives or trends that conflict with national policy,' he said.
The International Museum Day Seminar 2025 was held in conjunction with the annual International Museum Day celebration, observed worldwide on May 18 each year.

The centre serves as a bridge to engage with the Southeast Asia region to develop an international land-sea trade corridor. It also plays a critical role in sharing Hainan's development narrative, including tourism, commercial expansion and policy reforms. Hainan Daily Press Group deputy editor-in-chief Niu Xiaomin said Malaysia was chosen because it is home to a sizeable population of Chinese descendants, particularly the Hainanese community, which has preserved deep-rooted cultural ties and continues to uphold strong traditions. He hoped the stories of Malaysian Chinese and Chinese citizens could serve as a cultural bridge, strengthening people-to-people ties between the two nations while promoting mutual understanding and highlighting shared values across the region. He also said that Hainan would officially become a free trade port on Dec 18, allowing for some 74% of goods entering the island to enjoy zero-tariff benefits. "This marks a new starting point for Hainan's journey towards a higher level of openness to the outside world," he said at the launch of the HIMC–Asean Liaison Centre here on Friday (Aug 1). The event also saw the establishment of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor Asean Economic and Trade Station, and the Haifeng International Film and Television Base Asean Centre. Several agreements on media collaboration were also signed with Bernama, Nanyang Siang Pau and Kwong Wah Yit Poh to jointly produce programmes and conduct activities about Malaysia and Hainan. Partnerships were also established between HIMC and the Federation of Hainan Association Malaysia, Mila University and Lingshui Yingli Wanxiang Digital Media Industry. The HIMC–Asean Liaison Centre also serves as the Malaysia office for Guangxi International Communication Centre and the International Communication Centre of Guizhou Radio and TV Station. Malaysia denies US exclusive rare earth deal claims, says Tengku Zafrul
KUALA LUMPUR: Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz has dismissed rumours that the United States sought exclusive rights to Malaysia's rare earth products. He clarified that no such request was made during recent tariff negotiations. 'I don't know where it is coming from, because there are many speculations. But I can attest that there is no request from the US to exclusively have access to our rare earth (product),' he said at a press conference. Tengku Zafrul emphasised that Malaysia has no agreements to exclusively supply rare earths to the US or any other nation, including China or neighbouring countries. The Lynas Malaysia Advanced Materials Plant near Kuantan, operational since 2012, remains a key global rare earth processing hub outside China, serving markets in East Asia, the US, and Europe. Separately, the minister highlighted efforts to secure zero tariffs for Malaysian commodity exports like cocoa, rubber, and palm oil to the US. He noted that products the US cannot produce domestically stand a strong chance of tariff exemptions, currently set at 19 per cent. - Bernama
