An Assam Police spokesman said that the encounter came after secret information that some armed cadres, who had given an extortion notice to National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials and engineers in Dima Hasao district, were hiding in areas under the Haflong police station.
Accordingly, a search operation was launched by Assam Police's Special Units and Assam Rifles on Saturday evening.

"Almost after 60 hours of search, on Monday, the search parties came across an armed group in the area between N Kubin-Hera Kilo. The armed militants fired on the security forces, who retaliated, and there was a heavy exchange of fire," the spokesman said.
Two AK series rifles and a pistol were recovered from the forested areas, and a search operation is still underway.

NSCN-K-YA faction
were killed on April 27 during a fierce gun battle between the security forces and the extremists in Arunachal Pradesh's Longding district.
Defence spokesman Lt Col Amit Shukla had said that two construction workers were kidnapped on April 25 from Pangchao areas in Longding district.
Based on specific information, troops of the Indian Army and the Assam Rifles launched a joint massive operation in the Pangchao areas on Sunday. "Wherein the contact was established and in the ensuing firefight, three cadres of NSCN-KY-A group were neutralised," he said.
One construction worker was rescued in the operation, and four automatic weapons, ammunition and other war-like materials were also recovered from the areas.
The Army and Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Assam Police, earlier apprehended a wanted top cadre of the NSCN-KYA from Assam's Charaideo district. The NSCN-K-YA has earlier served an extortion notice of Rs 20 lakh to the public sector oil major
Oil India Limited
(OIL).
The notice was signed by the outfit's self-styled Major, Tha Aung and sent to OIL's office in Manabhum, located in the Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The outfit in its notice sought Rs 20 lakh by December 10, and it has also warned that OIL would be held accountable for any delays.
The OIL has its operational site at the Manabhum reserve forest in eastern Arunachal, and the thickly forested reserve forest areas fall under both Changlang and Namsai districts.
The NSCN-K-YA has not signed a ceasefire agreement with the Centre.

CM calls for unity with Haryana, pushes for water re-assessment
Chandigarh: Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday emphasised the need for closer ties between Punjab and Haryana, calling the neighbouring state as a 'younger brother' and urging the Centre, especially Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to focus on strengthening relations rather than deepening divisions. (Ravi Kumar/HT) Speaking in the Punjab assembly on a resolution against the Centre's decision to deploy the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at Bhakra-Nangal dam project, Mann criticised the ongoing political disputes between the neighboring states, particularly over water sharing, which has been a contentious issue for decades. 'Both Punjab and Haryana contribute more than 70% to the national food pool. However, successive political parties in both states have perpetuated conflicts, especially over water rights, despite having much in common,' Mann said. He called for a more cooperative approach to development between the two states, urging them to work together for mutual prosperity. Referring to the ongoing dispute over water resources, Mann called for a re-assessment of water in rivers flowing through Punjab, including the Ravi, Beas and Sutlej rivers, to address water-sharing arrangements with Haryana and Rajasthan. 'No review of water distribution has occurred for decades, though such reviews should be conducted every 25 years,' Mann said. The CM argued that Punjab has no surplus water to share and underscored the emotive significance of the issue for the people of the state. Woman gets death for killing her three children
A court here has sentenced a woman to death for killing her three minor children by drowning them in the Sengar river in 2024, while her paramour was sentenced to life imprisonment in the case. The woman's nine-year-old son, who survived the attempt on his life, provided crucial testimony in the case. Additional Sessions Judge Saif Ahmed found Priyanka guilty of murdering her own children and pronounced the death penalty. Her paramour Ashish alias Danny was sentenced to life imprisonment. During the trial, the government counsel argued that the act of a mother conspiring with her lover to drown her innocent children was 'rarest of the rare.' The court also imposed a fine of Rs 2.5 lakh on Priyanka and Rs 1 lakh on Ashish. Furthermore, the court ordered that 75 per cent of the combined fine amount be given to Sonu, the surviving child. According to the police, Priyanka was involved in a relationship with Ashish after her husband's death. On June 27, 2024, Priyanka along with Ashish took her four sons -- Sonu (9), Madhav (6), Aditya (4), and Mangal (2) -- to the Sengar river bank in Devarpur. They reportedly drugged the children before throwing them into the water one by one. While locals managed to rescue the eldest boy, Sonu, who regained consciousness and later provided crucial testimony against his mother, the three younger children drowned. Police arrested both Priyanka and Ashish and subsequently filed a chargesheet against them. Government Counsel Abhishek Mishra stated that the woman's brother-in-law had filed a complaint against her.
