Kolkata/Kharagpur: A 21-year-old IIT Kharagpur fourth-year mechanical engineering student was found hanging in his room at Rajendra Prasad Hall on Friday morning, three days after he had returned to the institute after a two-month summer break.
Police have initiated an investigation and the IIT has set up a five-member committee to probe the incident.
This is the fourth unnatural death at the institute in the past seven months and fifth since June 2024.
Ritam Mondal from Kolkata's Regent Park was pursuing a five-year dual-degree programme, and his fourth-year classes had began on Thursday.

Police said the student's body was discovered around 11.20 am by a hostel employee who received a call from Ritam's father, Uttam Mondal.
"His father panicked after Ritam did not pick up his calls and contacted a hostel employee to check on his son. It was the hostel employee who found the student hanging and informed the security response team and administration," said a source.
The security response team, medical team, director, senior administrative officials and cops reached the hostel and took the body to BC Roy hospital, where he was declared dead.

Ritam's distraught parents reached the institute in the afternoon.
A student at the same hostel said Ritam had returned to his room after dinner on Thursday night and they had not noticed any abnormalities in his behaviour. He shared the hostel room with two other students, one from his own department and the other from chemical engineering, but they had not returned to the institute after the summer break.
Police suspect Ritam died by suicide and preliminary inquiries suggest he may have had a tiff with his family.
However, an official statement will only be issued after the autopsy at Midnapore Medical College Hospital on Saturday morning. "The exact cause will be understood only after the autopsy, which will be video-recorded," a district police officer said.
A statement issued by IIT Kharagpur mourning the loss of a student said Ritam was known for his "academic diligence" and "gentle demeanour". As per records with the institute's SARTH counselling centre, there were no indicators of any mental health issue.
The faculty adviser of his department also claimed there was no apparent academic and non-academic issue that had caught their attention. Ritam's CGPA was above 8, an official said.
Director Suman Chakraborty said, "It is extremely distressing to lose a student. I have asked the fact-finding committee to provide a concrete and detailed report on the incident and the student after gathering information from the department, hostel, counselling centre and the hospital.
The committee will also speak to hostel employees and friends to get information about the student because they often know more about a student informally than the administration.
" He added that he had spoken to one of Ritam's room mates who returned on Friday morning to find out if anything was bothering him but was told that Ritam did not share his problems with them.
Though Ritam's death initially appears to be unrelated to the institute, Chakraborty said there were lapses in the system that he was trying to address after taking charge as director.
"The saddest part is before we could implement the holistic intervention programme for the well-being of students, yet another death has taken place on the campus."
The last unnatural death of a student on the Kharagpur campus was on May 4 when a third-year civil engineering student, Mohammad Asif Qamar, was found hanging in his hostel room. The institute has in recent months introduced a slew of measures, including setting up an experts' panel to look into the cause of the string of suicides on the campus.

Sheikhpura man held for brutal dowry assault after love marriage

P atna: In a shocking case of domestic violence and dowry harassment, a man from Sheikhpura was arrested on Sunday for allegedly torturing his wife following their love marriage. The accused, Shivam Kumar (24), allegedly assaulted his wife, cut her hair and shaved her eyebrows with a blade while demanding a dowry. The 20-year-old victim had married Shivam at a temple in Jamui on April 10 this year. The couple enjoyed a harmonious relationship for the first month, but tensions soon escalated when Shivam and his family allegedly began pressuring her for a dowry of Rs 5 lakh. Estranged from her own family after eloping, the woman was unable to meet the demands, leading to repeated abuse. The situation reached a breaking point on June 20 when Shivam allegedly attempted to kill her. The woman managed to escape and lodged a complaint at the women's police station the same day. Following her report, police launched a manhunt and arrested Shivam in Lakhisarai on Sunday. A police officer said, "The victim's ordeal began when she met Shivam through social media one year ago. Their relationship blossomed, but her family opposed the union. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Senior Living Homes in Palembang May Surprise You Senior Living | Search Ads Undo Defying her family's wishes, she eloped with Shivam and married him in a temple, only to face abuse shortly after." Women's police station in-charge Anamika Kumari said, "The victim met Shivam through social media a year ago. They started talking and, six months later, began meeting each other. Both informed their families about the relationship. The girl's family opposed it and refused to accept the relationship." Distressed by her family's disapproval, the young woman eloped and married Shivam at a temple in the Sikandra police station area in Jamui. She then moved in with Shivam's family in Sheikhpura, who initially accepted her. "All was well for about a month," Kumari said. "However, at the beginning of June, her husband and in-laws began demanding ₹5 lakh as dowry. The woman told them that she had severed ties with her family, who had stopped speaking to her after she ran away. She asked how she could possibly provide the money. In response, her in-laws began verbally abusing her," she added. Disputes over the dowry increased between the couple. On June 20, in a fit of rage, Shivam allegedly beat her severely. "Not satisfied, her husband then cut her hair with scissors and shaved her eyebrows with a blade. Terrified by this behaviour, she managed to escape from her in-laws' house and reached the women's police station, where she filed a complaint. She then returned to her parental home in Nawada," the station in-charge added. Shivam is set to be presented before the court on July 28.

Undocumented El Salvador migrants arrested in sting: Police posed as teen girls online; flagged for deportation

Representational image Three men from El Salvador, currently in the US without legal status, were arrested in Houston, Texas, after being caught in a police sting targeting online predators. Officers from the Houston police department posed as teenage girls on the dating app Jaumo. Over the last ten days, they arrested Abner Ruiz, 37, Erick Menjivar, 30, and Carlos Gomez, 33, on charges of online solicitation of a minor. All three are now in custody at Harris County Jail with immigration detainers placed against them. Court records say two of the men believed they were meeting a 14-year-old girl, while the third thought he was talking to a 16-year-old. Police confirmed the sting operation did not specifically focus on undocumented immigrants. Carlos Gomez had previously been deported to El Salvador in 2020 after entering the US illegally in 2012, ICE told Fox 26. At some point, he re-entered the country without being detected. He was arrested on 17 July during the sting, after fleeing the meeting spot, running stop signs, crashing into a gate, and injuring a pedestrian. He also faces charges for failing to stop and provide help. Abner Ruiz was also caught in the July 17 operation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 11 Harry Potter Actors Who Grew Up Stunningly.
