Mumbai: Banks appear to have largely looked through improving system liquidity and policy rate cuts while reducing the cost of borrowing for those taking loans tied to the lenders' internal benchmarks. Rates have reduced by only 5-15 bps for existing borrowers on loans tied to marginal cost of funds-based lending rate, even as liqudity turned into a surplus, and the central bank cumulatively cut policy rates by half a percentage point since February."I think the market rates will remain dynamic for some time before they settle," Amitabh Chaudhry, MD, Axis Bank , had said during the earnings call. "It was something similar when the rate started going up. You will see something similar when the rates are going down. So, it is pretty much a part of the normal playout of this activity over the next couple of quarters." In response to the cumulative 250 basis point rate increase during the last tightening cycle, between May 2022 and September 2024, the one-year median MCLR rose 170 basis points. The weighted average lending rate on fresh and outstanding rupee loans increased 186 basis points and 116 basis points, respectively, during this period. Last week, several major banks made modest adjustments to their lending rates. HDFC Bank , India's most-valued lender, reduced its one-year MCLR by 15 bps, from 9.30% to 9.15%. Liquidity in system has improved since April. Daily average surplus liquidity stood at ₹1.4 lakh crore in April and ₹1.3 lakh crore as of May 8. March saw an average daily deficit of ₹1.23 lakh crore. The WALR on outstanding rupee loans declined by 10 bps as of March. In case of fresh loans, it has increased reflecting the significant proportion of MCLR-linked loans in it, given the longer reset period, it may undergo adjustments with some lag, experts say."Uneven pace of rate transmission is due to mix of credit portfolios across fixed and floating rate structures, and varied spreads by banks," said Aastha Gudwani, India chief economist at Barclays.

Rising inventory glut creates uncertainty in India's automobile retail sector

The Indian automobile industry is staring at a worrying build-up of unsold inventory at dealerships , casting a shadow over what has otherwise been a robust post-pandemic production run. According to the Economic Times, an estimated ₹52,000 crore worth of vehicles remain unsold — a figure that points to a growing disconnect between wholesale dispatches and actual retail sales . According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) , inventory level is currently hovering at 52–53 days across several segments, significantly higher than the industry's healthy benchmark of 30–35 days. Mounting costs and margin pressures For dealers, the consequences of ballooning stock levels are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. Higher inventory translates to a direct rise in carrying costs — including financing charges, insurance, and storage — all of which erode already thin margins. With capital locked in unsold vehicles, cash flow becomes tighter, limiting the ability of dealerships to invest in staffing, service expansion, and technology upgrades. Many dealers are also being forced to offer steep discounts to clear ageing inventory, further eating into their bottom lines. OEMs not immune to the fallout Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) too face several downstream risks as excessive discounting risks diluting brand equity and resetting customer expectations for lower price points. An overburdened and financially stressed dealer network may struggle to maintain service quality and responsiveness, ultimately impacting customer experience and loyalty. In the longer term, OEMs could face market share instability if retail networks falter. Persistent misalignment between OEM sales targets and ground-level demand can lead to mistrust and churn within the dealer network. Sustainability and structural risks The current scenario poses a serious challenge for small and mid-sized dealerships. Prolonged pressure on margins and rising operational inefficiencies — including pre-delivery inspections and vehicle lot management — could push weaker players to exit or consolidate. Such trends may reduce competitiveness and diversity within the dealership ecosystem. Call for strategic rethink To stem the tide, industry experts are urging OEMs to adopt a more demand-driven approach to production and dispatch. Real-time data analytics could help better align wholesale planning with actual retail traction. Moreover, stronger dealer support mechanisms — such as inventory funding, interest subvention schemes, and buy-back programmes — are being recommended to ease the working capital burden. Bolstering digital retail platforms and diversifying dealer revenue streams through expanded offerings in used cars, after-sales services, and insurance products can help in enhancing long-term viability. Looking Ahead As the Indian auto sector continues to navigate a complex demand environment amid economic uncertainty , geopolitical tensions and shifting spending patterns, a more collaborative and transparent OEM-dealer relationship will be key. Balanced production planning and financial support will be essential to ensure that dealerships remain profitable, agile, and resilient — especially in the face of rapidly evolving consumer preferences. A robust, financially sound retail network is not just a sales channel, but a critical pillar of sustainable industry growth.

Delhi man held for ₹2 crore cyber fraud, links with Chinese-linked syndicate

Gurugram: Faridabad police arrested a 39-year-old Delhi resident, who runs a hotel and nightclub in Dubai, for allegedly orchestrating a ₹2.02 crore cyber fraud in collaboration with a Chinese-linked syndicate, officials said on Friday. Faridabad police arrested a 39-year-old Delhi resident, who runs a hotel and nightclub in Dubai, for a ₹ 2.02 crore cyber fraud. (Getty Images) Bhupesh Arora, originally from Karnal and currently residing in northwest Delhi's Rohini Sector 11, operates a four-star hotel and eight nightclubs in Dubai, police said, adding that he was taken into custody on Wednesday upon returning to India and is now on a four-day police remand. According to investigators, Arora and his business partner, also based in Dubai, ran a cyber fraud operation alongside their hospitality ventures. The duo facilitated illegal fund transfers from India to Dubai using payment gateways, later converting the funds into cryptocurrencies and handing them over to Chinese handlers after deducting a commission. Police said Arora was compelled to return to India 20 days back on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana high court. Faridabad police had got a lookout circular issued for him against which he had moved the high court. Though the court had quashed the circular, it had directed him to come to India and cooperate with the Faridabad police by joining the investigation of the case. Yashpal Yadav, Faridabad Police PRO, said investigators traced Arora through a payment gateway account linked to him, into which ₹2.8 lakh of the duped money was transferred. 'This payment gateway helped us identify Arora. The bank account holder couldn't be traced and may have been created fraudulently,' he said. Arora allegedly retained 30% of the proceeds, with the remaining 70% going to his Dubai-based partner, who liaised directly with the Chinese network, Yadav said. Arora is the 12th person arrested in this case. Police are now pursuing his business partner and three others. 'We will issue an LOC against his partner so he can be arrested on arrival in India,' said Yadav. The victim, whose name police have witheld, a 51-year-old man from Sector 88 in Faridabad, was duped in January 2024 after falling for a fake investment scheme promoted through social media ads. Believing he was investing in stock markets, he transferred ₹2.02 crore to 11 different bank accounts. A case was registered at the Cybercrime Police Station (Central), and police have so far recovered ₹60 lakh, which was returned to the victim. The remaining amount, officers said, had already been siphoned abroad.
