Storm Center PM Update: Severe Weather Chances Return
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It has been a warmer day for KELOLAND with much more sunshine. We got the chance to dry out East River after significant rainfall over the last few days. We aren't quite done with the unsettled weather though as an incoming trough will bring the chance for thunderstorms late this afternoon and through the overnight hours. A majority of KELOLAND is in a slight risk for severe weather and all hazards are possible with any supercell storms that fire up. Make sure to stay weather aware and keep an eye out on our social media pages for updates. The recent model outputs shows scattered thunderstorms in North Dakota potentially forming a line and moving southeast, the main threat would then shift towards severe wind gusts. There is a chance the line could clip northeastern KELOLAND overnight. Besides the thunderstorm chances, most of us will see partly cloudy skies with lows in the 60s. Going into tomorrow, the heat will become more widespread with highs in the 80s and 90s. Dew point values will be in the 60s and 70s East River, this means heat index values could be close to the triple digits. Overall, it will be a quiet day and the atmosphere will try to recharge. As a cold front moves through, there will be more energy for thunderstorms to form during the evening. The conditions will likely form storms in clusters and the activity West River will move into East River overnight. Another slight risk of severe weather is in store for most of KELOLAND with the main hazards being damaging wind gusts and hail. We will take a break from rain chances at the beginning of next week as a high pressure system settles in. Highs will be seasonable before we become slightly warmer into the end of the week with periodic chances for showers and thunderstorms. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. High winds damage buildings, uproot trees in NW IA
NORTHWEST IOWA (KELO) — High winds from an afternoon storm left behind scattered branches, uprooted trees and damaged buildings across southeast KELOLAND. A relatively calm day turned a little chaotic in parts of northwest Iowa. Strong winds roll through Ocheyeden. About 20 miles west, a viewer sent us footage of dust kicking up in the air. Storm damages towns across KELOLAND The storm scattered branches and caused structure damage. In Rock Rapids, the winds were so strong that it uprooted a tree and damaged a home. It also halted construction progress on a building and was the reason behind a tree falling onto a garage. There was also evidence of high winds in Little Rock. 'It was a mess when I came into town,' Kirk Peters said. That was especially true at Joe Schilling's home. He and his wife were out of town when the storm hit. 'We were in Sioux Falls. It's our 37th anniversary today, and we were actually at the zoo, and my neighbor called me and asked if we were home. I said 'No.' He said, 'Well, you got a great big branch on your house,'' Schilling said. The tree means a lot to him. 'This is actually a tree we planted when my son was in kindergarten, so it's kind of a little bit sentimental to us,' Schilling said. People like Schilling and Kirk Peters have been working hard to clean up. 'I've been pushing trees and stuff down to the tree dump on the north end of town, and it was pretty well full, so I took my loader and just piled it all up. It just kept coming,' Peters said. So people in Little Rock and the surrounding communities will have quite the mess to clean up in the coming days. You can expect more coverage Thursday of storm damage throughout northwest Iowa. In Sioux Falls, over 3,000 households lost power during tonight's thunderstorms. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Could flooding be an issue with the rain this week?
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The rain and floods of June 2024 were historic for South Dakota. One year later, as KELOLAND heads into a week of consistent rain showers and thunderstorms, meteorologist Brian Karstens clears the air about flood concerns. Karstens said the June 2024 rainfall was 'blockbuster' rain. Back then, Karstens said the KELOLAND area saw flooding in the third week of June, bringing damage and clean-up efforts to many communities. According to a KELOLAND 2024 weather recap, many of these flooded communities, like Rock Valley and McCook Lake, saw 12-18 inches of rainfall just from June 20-22. TenHaken wants drivers to 'feel the urge to zipper merge' But one year later, we're not looking at that much rain, Karstens said. But he cautions the possibility of local flash flooding, due to the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere. 'Basically, you look at the parameters and how the water stacked in the air, and it's going up,' Karstens said. 'It definitely goes up normally this time of year. We expect into mid-June that you're going to just start to see that rich humidity making its presence known, so always be aware of that.' Karstens said to always take flash flood warnings seriously. 'If we do get some downpours tonight, even tomorrow, even next week, I think that's just a general thing to think about as we get into the forecast,' Karstens said.
