'This event is very meaningful because it reflects the harmony, unity, and togetherness of Sarawakians who live in an environment of peace and mutual respect, regardless of racial, cultural, and religious backgrounds,' he said in his address.

MRC Miri lauded for nurturing volunteerism, compassion among youths

Lee inspects the parade line during the MRC Miri Division Annual Parade. MIRI (July 28): Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin praised the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Miri Chapter for standing firm in delivering aid and shaping the next generation of compassionate leaders. Lee, who is also MRC Miri advisor, commended MRC Miri on its continuous efforts in instilling empathy and civic consciousness among its school-going members. 'MRC Miri Chapter continues to place its focus on nurturing volunteerism among youths, believing that early exposure to humanitarian values can create lifelong agents of kindness, resilience and social responsibility. 'We (MRC) believe the spirit of volunteerism, when cultivated from school days, creates young individuals who are not only knowledgeable but lead with compassion, integrity and responsibility,' Lee said in his address at the MRC Miri Division Annual Parade 2025 here yesterday. He said over the years, MRC Miri has remained active through a range of impactful programmes such as environmental camps, hospital visits, youth development camps, storytelling competitions and the annual flag week. He said these community-driven activities do more than just raise funds by creating a sense of purpose and belonging in young volunteers. Lee said MRC Miri currently operates several essential services including the Kidney Dialysis Centre, the Sunflower Centre for children with special needs, a 3R Recycling Centre, as well as first aid and ambulance support. 'MRC also runs training institutes for first aid, disaster relief response teams, and community outreach efforts for low-income groups (B40) under the care of Dr Devi Uma. The latest, a fundraising bakery, also contributed to sustaining operations,' he added. This year's parade, held at MCC Field, saw participation from 24 contingents representing primary and secondary schools as well as MRC Miri staff and Miri Sunflower Centre. Also present were MRC Miri chairman Dr Mohd Arif Abdullah; MRC Bintulu chairman Wong Kee Tiong; MRC Miri's World Red Cross and Red Crescent Celebration (WRCRCC) chairman Aaron Ismanto Anggang; and the parade's organising chairman Voon Tze Ming. lead Lee Kim Shin Malaysian Red Crescent volunteerism youths

Over 2,000kg of rubbish collected from clean-up drive in Song District

The volunteers place bagfuls of rubbish at the collection zone during the work party in Song. KAPIT (July 26): A clean-up drive jointly carried out by Kapit District Council (KDC) and Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) on Thursday recorded 2,080kg of rubbish collected across a riverbank section of Sungai Katibas near here. The volunteers included the local residents, representatives of local non-governmental organisations (NGOs), as well as personnel of the KDC and Song District Office, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Civil Defence Force (APM), and People's Volunteers Corps (Rela). The clean-up activity covered the riverbank area along Jalan Mission, between SMK Song to Song Express Terminal. 'I cannot stress more about the importance of maintaining a clean environment that will protect our nature and heritage, and help us achieve balance in development. 'I call upon all of you to practise the good habit of disposing of rubbish inside the proper bins, and to never throw them into the river. 'Maintaining cleanliness is a collective responsibility of all quarters,' said Lidam. He also pointed out that the government had agreed to gazette Sungai Katibas as an 'Empurau Belt', and Song District as a 'Dabai Belt' stretching from Katibas to Ngemah. 'The Ka'tibas River is famous for the highly-prized indigenous freshwater fishes such as 'semah', 'tengadak' and 'empurau', which can fetch prices as high as RM1,000. 'Thus, maintaining a clean environment for our rivers is very important, as progress should not sacrifice nature,' added the assemblyman. Song District officer Harry Bruce Edwin, SRB Kapit officer Carol Bungan Leo, Song Information officer Joseph Lingga, Song Education officer Etam Linggi, as well as local community leaders Temenggong Jarmit Untam and Pemanca Lim Eng Hock were among some 250 volunteers taking part in the work party. Building the base for a love of learning

Lee (seated left) with SJKC Pandan pupils after launching the upgraded Pondok Kasih at the school in Johor Baru. — THOMAS YONG/ The Star SJKC Pandan pupils now have a vibrant new space to read, learn and grow, thanks to the successful upgrading of Pondok Kasih, a reading corner at the Johor Baru school. Designed to inspire curiosity, creativity and collaborative learning among school pupils and staff, the RM45,000 project was undertaken by Eco Spring, a subsidiary of Eco World, under the foundation's Eco World Cares initiative focusing on education. The newly revamped space was handed over by Eco World Foundation chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye and Eco World (southern region) divisional general manager Phan Yan Chan to SJKC Pandan headmistress Ong Lee Peng in a ceremony. In his speech, Lee said every student deserved a safe space where he or she could feel inspired, explore creativity and enjoy learning in a meaningful way. 'Pondok Kasih was created with this vision in mind and aligns with our commitment to educational empowerment among students,' he said, thanking the Eco Spring team for bringing the initiative to life. The transformation included roof replacement, new flooring, improved lighting, ceiling fan installation, a fresh coat of paint and upgraded landscaping. The result is a cosy and pupil-friendly environment suitable for reading, extra-curricular activities and group discussions. Praising the initiative, Ong described Pondok Kasih as an area where pupils can read quietly, relax during breaks, engage in group discussions or watch sports events. She said teachers could also use the space for book sharing, extra-curricular lessons and mentoring sessions. She extended her appreciation to the school board, Parent-Teacher Association and teachers for their support in the school's development journey. The reading corner now features well-designed bookshelves, picture book displays and comfortable seating to foster interest in reading, enhance language skills and promote a positive learning environment. The upgraded Pondok Kasih is expected to benefit 2,457 students and 122 teachers at the school. SJKC Pandan is one of the many schools supported by Eco World Foundation's Student Aid Programme, which also benefits 28 underprivileged students at the school. Nationwide, the programme assists about 2,000 students annually. Last year, Eco World Foundation also contributed nearly RM60,000 to enhance facilities at SK Gelang Patah and SJKT Taman Tun Aminah.
