MIRI (May 1): The Aidilfitri cum pre-Gawai celebration jointly organised by various government departments and agencies at Wisma Pelita Tunku yesterday was a heart-warming reflection of Sarawak's enduring harmony and unity, said State Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
'This event is very meaningful because it reflects the harmony, unity, and togetherness of Sarawakians who live in an environment of peace and mutual respect, regardless of racial, cultural, and religious backgrounds,' he said in his address.
Also present were Sarawak Rivers Board assistant controller (Region III) Mohd Ariffin Bujang; Miri Land and Survey controller Anthony Aboi; Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) Miri Water engineer Lau Jing Teck; and Miri Veterinar Department officer Dr Nur Athirah Mohd Jazman.
Adding on, Lee said the celebration, which brought together government agency staff from various departments such as the Sarawak Rivers Authority, Land and Survey Department, JBALB, and Natural Resources and Environmental Board (NREB), served as a symbol of multicultural appreciation.
'Aidilfitri and Gawai Dayak, two of the state's major festivals, are marked jointly in this occasion, representing not only cultural pride but also the shared values of gratitude, renewal, and community,' he pointed out.
He also praised the collaboration among the local agencies and departments involved, underscoring the importance of unity in achieving balanced and sustainable development.

Call to protect customary land and herbal heritage at Tuaran village
The cleared site in Kampung Lumawang. KOTA KINABALU (July 25): Urgent action is needed to protect a vital piece of Sabah's cultural and ecological heritage — the customary land in Kampung Lumawang, Tuaran, which houses Malaysia's first Customary School (SAANS) and a valuable herbal plant conservation site. Sabah Indigenous Peoples' Association (Sunduan Nabalu) president Shalmon Sanangan said the site is not only a centre of indigenous knowledge but is also slated for inclusion in the Unesco Good Safeguarding Practices, with a scheduled Unesco visit in November. However, he warned that the land is under serious threat due to ongoing development, which has already reduced Kampung Lumawang's customary land from over 150 acres to just ten acres. Shalmon Sanangan Shalmon, who also sits on the National Customary Heritage Expert Committee, said: 'This land is more than just soil — it is the heart of our efforts to preserve botanical treasures and irreplaceable traditional knowledge. The loss of this site would also mean the collapse of our unique Customary School model.' The area currently serves as the only teacher training hub for SAANS in Sabah, with 26 principals already trained and stationed across the state. The programme also plays a key role in conserving endangered native languages and indigenous knowledge systems. The historical significance of the site stretches back to pre-Japanese era settlements, serving as a traditional transport base during the British era. An oath stone still stands in the area, symbolising its undeniable status as indigenous customary land. Several local and international institutions have recognised the site's importance, including Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) — through its Native Customary School Living Lab — UiTM, the International University of Nagasaki, Japan, and the Sabah Biodiversity Centre (SaBC). SaBC is currently considering the site as part of its expansion plans for the Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark to Tuaran. Shalmon added that losing the site would also undermine Sabah's efforts to earn the prestigious 'Triple Crown of Borneo' recognition, which encompasses ecological, cultural, and geological excellence. 'We urge the state government to act immediately to protect the remaining ten acres of customary land for future generations,' he stressed. Issuing a stern warning, Shalmon declared: 'If developers continue to destroy the herbs and sacred land here, I will escalate this matter to the Prime Minister and, if needed, to His Majesty, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.' He concluded that the ongoing destruction represents a tragedy threatening Sabah's rich cultural, historical and ecological legacy — one that all stakeholders must act swiftly to preserve.

Sarawak Metro must take action against KUTS contractors over pipe damage, says Dapsy man
A photo taken on Wednesday shows the murky water. KUCHING (July 25): The Kuching Urban Transformation System's (KUTS) project undertaker, Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd must investigate, penalise and blacklist irresponsible contractors who caused the recent pipeline damage, said Wong King Yii. The Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak treasurer also called upon the Kuching Water Board to take prompt action to ensure residents in affected areas have access to clean water. 'I am dismayed by the repeated pipeline damage caused by contractors working under the KUTS project. 'These incidents have disrupted water supply to thousands of residents in Tabuan Jaya, Samarahan and nearby areas as a result of negligence and poor supervision,' he said in a statement today. KWB said a 12-inch asbestos cement water main near Jalan Wan Alwi was damaged on July 22 while a 200mm ductile iron main at Desa Ilmu was also damaged during construction on July 18. Wong said KWB must strive to resolve the long-standing murky water issues in other parts of Kuching, especially in Green Road and Jalan Song. According to him, the board has repeatedly promised to fix the murky water problem in Green Road but residents there continue to face murky, discoloured water. In Jalan Song, he said the situation is equally bad with residents recently experiencing either murky water or no water supply at all. 'Some were forced to shower at hotels just to get through the day. This is not just an inconvenience – it's a failure in basic service delivery. 'What makes matters worse is that the transboundary haze is already happening. With temperatures rising and air quality declining, access to clean and uninterrupted water supply is more critical than ever. 'The last thing people need in this weather is to deal with brown water or dry taps,' he lamented. Wong said development means nothing if basic utilities like clean water cannot be guaranteed. Given this, he said those responsible, be it contractor negligence or agency inaction, must be held accountable. 'Sarawakians deserve reliable infrastructure, not recurring disruptions and vague assurances,' he added.
