Crime intelligence boss and co-accused granted bail
The head of crime intelligence, Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo, along with some of his co-accused, was each granted R10,000 bail by the Pretoria magistrate's court on Friday.
They are facing charges of fraud and corruption relating to the appointment of an unqualified civilian in a senior post in the SAPS.
Their court appearance follows their arrest on Thursday by the NPA's Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC).
Khumalo is charged with Maj-Gen Philani Lushaba (CFO at crime intelligence), Maj-Gen Nosipho Precious Madondo (component head of intelligence analysis and co-ordination), Maj-Gen Josias Lekalaka (Gauteng provincial head: crime intelligence), Maj-Gen Zwelithini Gabela (technical management services), Brig Phindile Ncube (section head: personnel security — vetting) and Brig Dineo Mokwele. Their charges relate to the alleged irregular employment of Mokwele in the senior ranking position of brigadier in the technical support services (TSS).
According to Investigative Directorate spokesperson Henry Mamothame, it is alleged that Khumalo acting in common purpose with his co-accused were involved in the irregular appointment of Mokwele.
'They are further accused of flouting the vetting process which is critical in the appointment of senior officials within the SAPS, particularly the crime intelligence division which deals with sensitive and confidential information. This case forms part of IDAC's broader mandate of investigating fraud and corruption within government entities to prevent state capture through these critical entities,' Mamothame said.
Khumalo, Madondo, Lekalakala, Gabela, Ncube and Mokwele were granted R10,000 bail. They were ordered not to enter any premises belonging to crime intelligence.
Mamothame said Lushaba would remain in custody as his matter was a schedule 6 criminal offence, owing to his pending case, and this did not reflect in his affidavit presented to the court for the bail application.
The case has been postponed to August 13 for disclosure of the docket.

'No arrest warrant for police crime boss Fannie Masemola'
President Cyril Ramaphosa is aware that Masemola as an accounting officer, faces arrest. The National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) says they are not in the process of arresting or getting an arrest warrant for National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola. IDAC is not in the process of getting a warrant of arrest for the national police commissioner.' Slush fund The Crime Intelligence secret service account, also known as a slush fund, is allocated more than R600 million annually, which is used to pay police informants nationwide in exchange for information about criminal syndicates and their activities. Due to the nature of the transactions, there is little to no security of how the funds are used, City Press reported. Arrest Khumalo was apprehended on Thursday at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg after what authorities described as an 'extensive' investigation into the allegedly unlawful acquisition of two high-value properties. He was granted bail of R10 000 following his arrest in connection with a R45 million corruption scandal. The properties in question include a boutique hotel in Pretoria North, Gauteng, reportedly purchased for R22.7 million, and a commercial building in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), valued at R22.8 million. Both acquisitions are alleged to have been made without the requisite ministerial approval. 'He [Masemola] might be arrested as early as next week if all goes well. The application for his arrest warrant is ready to be presented to the magistrates, and I don't see why it would not be granted,' the source said. It is reported that Inspector-General of Intelligence Imtiaz Fazel recommended that criminal charges be preferred against those involved in the procurement process of the buildings, including Masemola. Charges Khumalo, appointed in December 2022, appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Friday alongside six co-accused. All face charges of corruption and fraud. The co-accused are Crime Intelligence chief financial officer (CFO) Philani Lushaba, Gauteng head of Crime Intelligence Josias Lekalakala, head of the Crime Intelligence's analysis centre Nozipho Madondo, technical support system manager in Crime Intelligence Dineo Mokwele, Sydney Gabela from the Saps' technology service department, and Phindile Ncube, who heads the Saps vetting office. ‘The house was covered in blood': hunt on for Gugulethu massacre shooters
Cape Town police launched a manhunt after seven men were shot dead in Gugulethu in the early hours of Saturday. The mass shooting occurred at about 3:30am in Kanana informal settlement. Police spokesperson Col André Traut said the SAPS was looking for two men, not considered suspects at this stage, who could help the investigation team. 'The serious and violent crimes unit in the Western Cape is appealing to the public for assistance in locating two men, Linde Madolo and Loyiso Matinisi, who may be able to provide crucial information regarding the mass murder of seven adult males in Gugulethu,' said Traut. Ward councillor Bongani Ngcombolo said extortion and violent crime were rife in the area. Ngcombolo, who visited the scene, said the men were gunned down inside a house in Kanana. 'Three people survived because they were asleep at the time of the shooting. Another man was killed about 200m from the house,' he said. 'We don't know what happened. There was blood everywhere. The scene was unbearable — the entire house was covered in blood.' Ngcombolo said four men were killed in a similar attack earlier in 2025 in Europe informal settlement. 'I'm deeply worried — crime and extortion are out of control in this ward. The community is traumatised. Some residents want to profile everyone living in the area so they know who's among them,' he said. Provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Thembisile Patekile said the victims were 26 to 30 years old. Most were not from the area. 'They are from Nyanga, and the one who was about 200m from here is from Delft,' he said. 'We don't yet know the motive for the shooting, but we are looking for people who can assist us in the investigation.' Patekile said Madolo, also known as 'Fire', was recently released from prison. He had been arrested in connection with the 2023 murder of Gugulethu community police forum deputy chairperson Lulama Dinginto. The case was struck off the roll due to the unavailability of a key witness. '[They] were seen at both scenes,' said Patekile. 'We have information that two men were present at the first and second scene. The description matches. We believe these two can assist us with the investigation.' He raised concerns about the murder rate in the metro. 'We are concerned. Any murder is a concern to us,' he said. 'But we have not had mass shootings of this nature for a while.' Patekile said police had allocated significant resources to curb violent crime and were targeting illegal firearms, particularly those not surrendered after registered owners had died. 'We're also tracing guns because illegal firearms are the weapon of choice, as seen here. A large number of empty cartridges were found at the scene,' he said. Extortion could not be ruled out as a possible motive. 'There's always a possibility — often it's extortion, taxi violence or gang-related. Any of those will be a possibility for now.'
