The Govee Floor Lamp 2 Is My Favorite Smart Lamp, and It's 21% Off Right Now

The Govee Floor Lamp 2 Is My Favorite Smart Lamp, and It's 21% Off Right Now

CNET2 days ago
Govee has made a name for itself in the smart lighting business as an affordable alternative to other brands, like Philips Hue. So when I decided to upgrade my old traditional lighting to smart bulbs, panels and switches, the colorful Govee RGBIC Floor Lamp (replaced by the Floor Lamp 2) was an easy choice for my living room. Why? I wanted something vertical to fit nicely into the space and a look that's different than a typical round smart bulb in your average lamp.
Right now the Govee Floor Lamp 2 is marked down to as low as $130 on Amazon, depending on the color you choose. That's a discount of 21% off the usual $165 list price.
Like most smart lighting, the Govee floor lamp uses RGB LEDs to offer just about any color you want. My family chose green to complement the green in our living room, but it also changes depending on the time of day. What I enjoy about this lamp is its low profile: You can barely see it, just a small base and a thin line of metal. The focus is on the light rather than the structure.
Another big selling point is its connection to other Govee products. If you own the Govee Backlight for TVs, which CNET's Russell Holly wrote about here, you can link up all your Govee lights to work in tandem as you watch a movie. Having all your lights working in sync with a movie like Dune or Mad Max: Fury Road is a lot of fun. Even without the backlight, a single app or Alexa and Google Assistant easily control all your lights.

Does the Govee floor lamp make a good gift?
As a big fan of Govee products, I think its lighting makes an excellent gift for others and yourself. If you know someone's decor style well, the floor lamp would be an excellent choice since it has such a slim profile that would fit every room I can imagine.
Otherwise, an ultraportable, color-changing Govee table lamp that has both in-person tap controls and on-device app controls is also a big winner since the person lucky enough to receive the lamp can bathe themselves in the glow of pretty much any color combination and pattern they can imagine. There are also these Govee color-changing light bulbs that can spruce up virtually any compatible setting.
My buying recommendation
Without a discount, this tall and thin smart lamp is a bit of an investment at $165, but it's still considerably cheaper than a Philips Hue equivalent. All three colors are currently on sale on Amazon -- the blue and black models are both marked down to $130, and the silver version is $140. While we've seen a deeper discount before, this model is newer and includes Matter support, higher lumen output and additional upgrades over its predecessor. To me, that makes it a no-brainer.

If you don't have a 4K television, it's the ideal choice offering access to all your favorite streaming services and a voice-controlled remote. We'd still advise most people to opt for the 4K Max model, but if you don't have a 4K TV this is the streaming stick for you. The Alexa Voice Remote Pro is a nice little upgrade for Fire TV users who want a few extra features. It has backlit buttons that light up in the dark, two customizable shortcut buttons, and even a remote finder in case it goes missing. It also supports voice control and can handle your TV's power and volume. The new Fire TV Stick 4K (2024) sports an upgraded 1.7GHz quad-core processor that's 30% more powerful than the previous model. In our Amazon Fire TV stick 4K review, we praised its 4K video quality for a budget price. Features include Dolby Vision/HDR10/HDR10+/HLG support, Wi-Fi 6 support and a Live TV guide button on the remote. You also get Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Atmos support to improve your streaming audio. This compact streaming stick offers smooth 4K HDR playback with Dolby Vision, a powerful quad-core processor, and next‑gen Wi‑Fi 6E support. It's perfect for upgrading older TVs and improving load times. Ideal for users who want solid streaming performance without complexity. We rank it as Amazon's best streaming stick right now. The Fire TV Cube is Amazon's most powerful streamer, driven by an octa-core processor that's about twice as fast as the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. It supports 4K with Dolby Vision and Atmos, Wi‑Fi 6E, and hands‑free Alexa in all directions. A built‑in HDMI‑in port lets you control a cable box, console, or webcam via voice. If you don't need 4K resolution, this 2-Series is a budget smart TV with 1080p resolution and support for HDR 10, HLG, and Dolby Digital Audio. The included Fire TV Alexa Voice Remote lets you find your favorite content, get sports scores, control smart home devices, and more with the sound of your voice. This 50-inch model delivers crisp 4K UHD picture quality with support for HDR10 and HLG, enhancing color and contrast for a vivid viewing experience. It features Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support, in addition to Alexa integration for hands-free prompts. You also have access to all of your favorite content at a clip thanks to the Amazon Fire platform. In our Amazon Fire TV Omni review, we said the TV is a solid pick for anyone who wants to stick within Amazon's ecosystem. Announced in November 2024, this is Amazon's first Mini-LED TV. It features a 144Hz refresh rate in tandem with AMD FreeSync Premium Pro support to give gamers ample juice for fast-paced games. The TV also has an Ambient Experience feature, so when it's powered off it displays dynamic artwork. This is also the first Amazon Fire TV to support Dolby Atmos audio. A compact 2.0‑channel soundbar that delivers a noticeable upgrade over most TV speakers. It's simple to set up and supports Dolby Audio, DTS Virtual: X, and EQ modes for movie, music, and dialogue. It won't shake the room, but for under $100 right now, Amazon's soundbar is a straightforward, fuss‑free audio boost. The soundbar is easy to set up and compatible with Fire TV streaming devices and smart TVs. It's available in various configurations, including options with additional surround speakers for a full 5.1-channel setup.

Female Uber Riders Can Soon Request Female Drivers

Uber announces the launch of a new feature in some U.S. cities that will pair women drivers and riders. Uber is set to launch a new feature that will allow women riders and drivers to request trips that avoid being paired with men. According to CNBC, the rollout will begin in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Detroit starting next month. "It's about giving women more choice, more control, and more comfort when they ride and drive," Camiel Irving, Uber's vice president of U.S. and Canada operations, said in a statement on Uber's site. "After hearing from women riders and drivers around the world, it was clear: Many want the option to match with other women. That's why we're proud to pilot Women Preferences in the U.S. for the first time ... It's about giving women more choice, more control, and more comfort when they ride and drive." Related: Uber CEO: Autonomous Vehicles Will Take Over Drivers Soon Here's how it will work for riders: Female riders can utilize an in-app option called Women Drivers, and can toggle back to all drivers if there are no women in the area. They can all set a preference for women drivers, which won't guarantee a female driver but will increase their chances of being matched. For pre-booked trips, women riders will be able to reserve a ride with a woman driver. Here's how it will work for drivers: Female drivers only have to toggle on the "Women Rider Preference" under settings in the Uber Driver app. Safety is a big concern for Uber and other rideshare app users, so it seems as though this will be a welcome function. However, the company made clear that being paired with a woman isn't guaranteed. Related: Uber's CEO Says Drivers Have About 10 Years Left Before They Will Be Replaced In 2019, Uber released a similar preference choice for Uber users and drivers in Saudi Arabia. In a statement, the Uber Team explained, "The launch of this unique feature comes on the back of Uber's Masaruky initiative that aims to increase women's participation in the workforce through access to affordable transportation, in addition to increasing women's access to flexible, part-time economic opportunities through the use of Uber technology." The program was a success and quickly expanded to 40 other countries.
