
Webb telescope captures images of Jupiter's auroras in stunning new detail
The solar system's largest planet displays striking dancing lights when high-energy particles from space collide with atoms of gas in the atmosphere near its magnetic poles, similar to how the northern lights are triggered on Earth.

But Jupiter's version has much greater intensity, according to an international team of scientists who analyzed the photos from Webb taken on Christmas in 2023. Jonathan Nichols, from the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, led the team. In a statement shared with NASA, he said their findings blew him away.
"We wanted to see how quickly the auroras change, expecting them to fade in and out ponderously, perhaps over a quarter of an hour or so," said Nichols. "Instead, we observed the whole auroral region fizzing and popping with light, sometimes varying by the second."
Learning more about the variability Nichols' team observed will help scientists better understand how Jupiter's atmosphere works, according to NASA.

Webb's images of Jupiter may have also opened doors to new questions about the universe. When compared to images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, which uses different wavelengths of light to capture them, scientists discovered that certain bright spots seen in Webb's images did not appear in Hubble's counterparts.
"This has left us scratching our heads," Nichols told NASA. "In order to cause the combination of brightness seen by both Webb and Hubble, we need to have a combination of high quantities of very low-energy particles hitting the atmosphere, which was previously thought to be impossible. We still don't understand how this happens."
Webb previously captured Neptune's glowing auroras in the best detail yet, many decades after they were first faintly detected during a flyby of the Voyager 2 spacecraft.

Smithsonian would lose space shuttle to Texas under GOP bill
The GOP spending and tax bill would move the Space Shuttle Discovery from its current home at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum annex, the Udvar-Hazy Center, in Virginia to the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Moving Discovery was the goal of legislation brought earlier this year by Texas Republican Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, who said in April that Houston's long ties to the space program should have been recognized with a space shuttle when four were retired by NASA in 2010. Space Center Houston, where the shuttle is expected to be put on display, is the official visitors center of Johnson Space Center in Houston. It is already home to a replica of the Space Shuttle Independence, formerly known as Explorer. The bill being considered by the House this week sets aside $85 million to relocate and build a facility to house and display a space vehicle that meets three criteria: it has flown into space, has carried astronauts; and is selected by an organization picked by NASA's administrator. There are only four space vehicles that meet the first two criteria: Enterprise, which belongs to the Intrepid Museum in New York; Endeavor, which belongs to the California Science Center in Los Angeles; Atlantis, which is on display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor's Complex, and Discovery at the Smithsonian. Only Atlantis and Discovery are still owned by the U.S. government. NASA owns Atlantis. Discovery was gifted to the Smithsonian Institution, a quasi-government agency, in 2012. It is highly unusual for items of national importance to be removed from the Smithsonian. Discovery was the third operational orbiter to fly in space. It entered service in 1984 and retired from spaceflight as the oldest and most utilized orbiter in 2011. It launched the Hubble Space Telescope. The Smithsonian's estimate to Congress was that it would cost between $300 million and $400 million of taxpayer dollars to move Discovery across the country. Last week, at an event at Space Center Houston, Cornyn said Houston's role in the space program is deserving of the Discovery and that the space shuttle should "come back home," although it wasn't manufactured in Houston, nor did it launch from Houston. It is a rare visitor, astronomers said it is only the third known interstellar object ever discovered. It was detected by a University of Hawaii-operated telescope in Chile, part of the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS). Astronomers track object that may have originated outside the solar system 'These are really rare so far. It's only the third one ever. There's, you know, a million and a half known asteroids and there's about 30, 35,000 near Earth objects,' said ATLAS astronomer Larry Denneau. The object — now officially named 3I/ATLAS — is believed to be up to 12 miles wide, much larger than either Oumuamua or Borisov, the two interstellar objects found before it. So, there's no way that an object that's orbiting the sun can produce that kind of velocity through the gravitational attraction of the sun,' Denneau said. 3I/ATLAS will pass between Earth and Mars sometime in October, but there is no danger of a collision. 'And so occasionally they find these very rare interstellar things. But in terms of impact risk, we're more worried about things, that come from within our own solar system,' said UH Manoa Institute for Astronomy associate astronomer Roy Gal. Scientists believe the object is likely a comet and could become more active as it nears the sun, it will not be visible to the naked eye but telescopes around the world are lining up to observe it. 'They're exotic in that they're a rare find since they come from outside the solar system. We don't know what they're going to be made of. And so a lot of the telescope proposals that are coming up want to try to study this really carefully to find out, does it have the same stuff that we find in our solar system? We'll learn something from that,' Denneau said. The discovery comes as the field of astronomy faces growing uncertainty. Federal funding cuts have already impacted major projects, including Hawaii's proposed Thirty Meter Telescope. See Mercury at greatest elongation, its farthest from the sun in the evening sky this week

Mercury reaches its point of greatest eastern elongation on Friday (July 4), presenting an excellent opportunity to spot the rocky planet during its evening apparition in the post-sunset sky. Astronomers describe Mercury as an "inferior planet", because its orbital path around the sun is much closer than that of Earth. As a result, Mercury never strays far from the sun in our sky and always appears low on the horizon compared to planets like Jupiter and Mars, whose distant orbits allow them to ride high on the line of the ecliptic (the plane of the major planets' path around the sun). The point at which Mercury appears most distant from the sun in Earth's sky, known as its point of greatest elongation, will occur at 00:37 a.m. EDT (0437 GMT) on July 4, according to stargazing website Viewers in the U.S. will have a golden opportunity to spot Mercury shining low above the western horizon immediately after sunset over the coming days. The rocky world will appear as a bright "evening star" approximately 15 degrees above the western horizon in the constellation Cancer at sunset for viewers in New York on July 4. For context, 10 degrees is roughly the same as the span of your clenched fist when held at arms length against the night sky. Mercury's low altitude could make it a challenging target for those in built-up areas, so we would advise scoping out a spot with a clear horizon ahead of time if you want to catch a glimpse of the fleet-footed planet before it sets less than an hour and a half after sundown. The "Great Bear" of the constellation Ursa Major will become visible around the time Mercury slips out of view, with the stars of Leo and the red light of Mars beating a path toward the western horizon as the night wears on.
