Is 'K-pop Demon Hunters' just a mashup of popular groups? Director spills the tea!
Ever since the teasers of '
K-pop Demon Hunters
' were shared online, fans from across the globe have come up with their speculations about who inspired the iconic characters of the film. Finally, director
Maggie Kang
is opening up about the behind-the-scenes deets of the show, from how it was made to who inspired it; she's ready to share it all!
Director of 'K-pop Demon Hunters' opens up about the film
Maggie Kang, the brains behind the film 'K-pop Demon Hunters', recently opened up about the much-anticipated project and shared some exclusive anecdotes about the film. In an interview with Forbes,
Kang
talked about how interesting it is to see fans fit their idols into the identities of the characters in the film.
'I think what I like to talk about is that there are so many certain archetypes that every group has. It's fun to see this conversation happening because everyone's picking the right member who fills that archetype and that kind of role and looks for each group,' the director shared.
She detailed that while no specific group or idol played a major role in the creation of the film, her upbringing surrounded by groups like H.O.T., Seo Taiji, the Boys, etc., became a major point of influence.
Kang and fellow director Appelhans opened up a digital bulletin board
Kang also detailed how she and her co-director,
Chris Appelhans
, opened up a digital bulletin board to add their favourite K-pop stars to draw inspiration from. They then later on gave access to their art department, which brought an interesting influx of different kinds of idols and bands.
Who played the inspiration behind 'The Saja Boys'?
One of the focal points in the film, the demon group '
The Saja Boys
', came from an amalgamation of a number of popular K-pop groups. The characters were inspired by groups like Tomorrow X Together, BTS,
Stray Kids
, ATEEZ, BIGBANG, and Monsta X.
She shared that while making the characters, she and her team kept in mind the basic idea surrounding the members of the group, i.e., the muscular member, the youngest member, the sweetest member, etc.
While the idea of the members took inspiration from K-pop, it was the character 'Mystery' that drew inspiration from anime instead. Kang shared how she was sceptical about the character; however, her team assured her and said, 'Trust us.' Along with this, the character 'Jinu' drew inspiration from Korean actors like Cha Eun Woo and
Nam Joo Hyuk
, as per Kang.
Inspiration behind the demon hunters 'Huntrix'
The female K-pop group featured in the film, '
Huntrix
', was inspired by modern-day girl groups. Kang stated in the interview that '[We looked at] ITZY, BLACKPINK, and [TWICE]. Who else? I think it was a lot of mixing.' Model Ahn So Yeon also became a major inspiration behind creating the character of Mira in the film.
The director then shared how even though all of the characters were inspired by idol groups, she worked hard on giving them all distinct and unique identifying characteristics. She shared that 'Even with the way we animated them, [they were different and distinct]. With their smile, you'll notice
Zoey
has more of a heart-shaped mouth when she expresses herself. We wanted Mira to be long and lean because I love that look on a woman. I think that's so beautiful. With
Rumi
, we leaned into a very classic, beautiful Korean look.'

Weekly Top Korean News: BTS' Jungkook-Jimin stalked during vacay, THE BOYZ confirms comeback sans Ju Haknyeon, more
This week was a rollercoaster for Korean entertainment. From BTS' Jungkook and Jimin's privacy breach overseas to NewJeans skipping their re-appeal against ADOR, tensions ran high. THE BOYZ confirmed a comeback and world tour post-Ju exit. Meanwhile, Waiting for Gyeongdo finally announced its release window. Also, Kim Soo Hyun took fresh legal action amid the ongoing scandal linked to late actress Kim Sae Ron. Read on for the biggest developments shaking up the K-industry. BTS' Jungkook & Jimin face privacy breach abroad Just weeks after their military discharge, BTS members Jungkook and Jimin are back in the spotlight, but not for the right reasons. On June 26, unauthorized videos and voice clips of the duo began circulating online. They're allegedly recorded during private moments abroad. One audio clip even appears to capture a lakeside conversation, sparking fears of stalking and hidden cameras. Fans are furious, calling it a serious invasion of privacy. The incident follows an earlier break-in attempt at Jungkook's home. Now, ARMYs are demanding HYBE take legal action and boost the duo's security overseas. Meanwhile, sightings of the duo in Switzerland and Europe have fueled rumors that they're filming Season 2 of Are You Sure? But the excitement is now overshadowed by growing concern for their safety. THE BOYZ confirm comeback and World Tour after Ju exit THE BOYZ is officially set to make their comeback in mid-July with a new album. This marks their first return since Ju Haknyeon's controversial exit. The group will promote as a nine-member team. Soon after, the group will embark on THE BLAZE world tour, starting August 8 in Seoul, with stops across Asia. The announcement follows Sangyeon's military enlistment and Ju's removal after a scandal involving an AV actress. Fans are currently divided. Some are supporting the group's decision to continue, while others have criticized the agency's handling of the situation. Despite the debate, the comeback is still going ahead. This return will test the revamped lineup's strength and public reception as THE BOYZ enters a new chapter in their career. Waiting for Gyeongdo to premiere in December 2025 Waiting for Gyeongdo is an upcoming romantic comedy by JTBC, starring Park Seo Joon and Won Ji An. It's been recently confirmed that the series is set to premiere in December 2025. The 12-episode drama follows entertainment reporter Lee Gyeong Do and his unexpected reunion with ex-girlfriend Seo Ji Woo. She's a seemingly perfect heiress hiding deep emotional scars after a messy divorce. Their reconnection sparks a journey of rediscovery and unresolved emotions. It's directed by Im Hyun Wook and written by Yoo Young Ah. The series also features Lee El, Lee Joo Young, Kang Ki Doong, and Jo Min Kook in key supporting roles. Are NewJeans members returning to ADOR? NewJeans has decided not to file a re-appeal against the court's injunction. This decision effectively finalises the ruling that bars the group from pursuing independent activities outside ADOR. It has raised questions about whether the members are reconsidering their stance, though no official statement has been made. Earlier, speculations were already making rounds after Danielle appeared at OMEGA's Kyoto event on June 18. She was accompanied by ADOR staff. While fans questioned if this marked a return, sources clarified it was a pre-existing brand commitment, not a violation. Despite ongoing rumors, there's still no confirmation of reconciliation. The main lawsuit over NewJeans' exclusive contracts continues, with the next hearing set for July 24, 2025. Kim Sae Ron-Kim Soo Hyun scandal update This week saw major developments in the ongoing Kim Sae Ron and Kim Soo Hyun scandal. On June 19, Kim Sae Ron's former manager sued YouTuber Kwon Young Chan for defamation. Leaked messages soon followed. They reveal the late actress confiding in him about her mother allegedly posting on her Instagram while medicated. It suggests family tensions. Moreover, the messages painted the manager as a caring, guardian-like figure. Meanwhile, on June 23, Kim Soo Hyun filed a fresh criminal complaint against Kim Se Ui and Kim Sae Ron's family. His legal team claimed a deepfake audio was used to spread false allegations of a past relationship and cover-up attempt. They call it a serious case of defamation and digital forgery.

‘Suga is the Eminem of K-pop': Grammy-winning producer reveals why the West wants to work with the singer
BTS member SUGA kicked off a solo world tour before heading to the military, spanning 102 days across 10 countries, including the United States. The rapper of the seven-member boy band saw his popularity hit a whole new high. But apart from being a performer, SUGA is known for producing his own music—something he's been obsessed with since childhood. He's done it for big names in the industry like Heize, IU, PSY, OMI, Suran, and even Jungkook. But according to Grammy-winning producer Frankie Biggz, SUGA isn't just another idol. His music is now being recognised overseas, and he's changing how people view producers in the K-pop space. Biggz even compared his authenticity to that of U.S. rapper Eminem. Also read: BTS' Suga's students didn't know he was a star: 'He always arrived early, read my 500-page textbook, wasn't just a donor,' says hospital's professor Biggz, who's worked with names like Kanye West, 50 Cent, and Eminem, was recently interviewed by Honorary Reporters, a program backed by South Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. He praised the 'Daechwita' hitmaker for proving that music producers don't always need to stay behind the curtain. They can create beats, master albums, and take full control, on stage, on tour, and on charts worldwide, all at once. What really struck him was how SUGA does it all while being part of one of the most influential groups in the world. A group whose voice reaches even the UN, yet here's a guy still handling every inch of his creative process, start to finish. 'So, for SUGA to be doing what he's doing, he had to be obsessed with it. He was obsessed even before he became a member of BTS,' Biggz said. Also read: BTS' V turns heads in black tank top at RunSeokjin tour; RM, J-Hope bust out dance moves to Super Tuna To Biggz, SUGA's already carved a niche that puts him at the top of every Western label's wish-list. 'He's an amazing artiste, he looks great, the camera loves him, and he has millions of fans around the world; that's a very attractive quality for any Western label. Secondly, it's not just for show. He attracts Western artistes because he is one of the most talented people on earth.' Artistes like him aren't just collaborators, they are someone who bridges the gap, the producer emphasised. 'When it comes to breaking through, when it comes to who's going to be the first to introduce a sound, who's going to be the first to carve their way through all of that, he's winning,' Biggz said. Since SUGA understands both Korean and Western sounds, he's in a unique spot to connect the two, and the industry trusts him to do just that. 'But I think that SUGA is just a chameleon in terms of production,' he added. Biggz also pointed out what separates legends like Kanye and Eminem: 'that maniacal obsession with their careers,' something he clearly sees in SUGA too. Drawing a direct comparison to Eminem, he said: 'He has that presence. He has that authenticity, like Eminem, SUGA carries himself with respect, but if someone offends one of his team members, you're going to have to talk to him first.' 'In the future, K-pop will likely have an increasing influence on global trends,' Biggz said, adding, 'Min Yoongi can become a conduit for Western professionals into the Korean industry, demonstrating that professionalism and respect for the process are universal values of the Korean music industry.' The producer acknowledged that while he isn't sure what kind of life SUGA lived in his early days, one thing he's certain of is that this kind of resilience, understanding, presence, and toughness, those genuine qualities, don't come from a perfect life situation.
