Shamrock Rovers ease to win in Gibraltar
St Joseph's 0 Shamrock Rovers 4 SHAMROCK ROVERS earned a 4-0 victory over St Joseph's in today's first leg of the Uefa Conference League second-round qualifier at Europa Point Stadium. The emphatic win all but ensures the Hoops will progress, with next week's return match looking like a formality. Rory Gaffney's early clinical finish put Stephen Bradley's side in the driving seat. The Irish side then blew away their rivals in an eight-minute second-half period, as goals from Danny Mandroiu, John McGovern, and Jack Byrne sealed the win. The Premier Division leaders survived a couple of scares, but the scoreline was ultimately a fair reflection of the gap in quality between the two teams. Rovers went into the game with fresh memories of a superb 2024-25 Conference League campaign, when they made it to the knockout phase before being beaten by Molde on penalties. St Joseph's, meanwhile, were perceived as the underdogs, but did secure an upset victory over NIFL Premiership side Cliftonville in the last round, prevailing 5-4 on aggregate after extra time. The winners of the tie will face either Malta's Floriana or Kosovo's Ballkani, with the latter holding a 4-2 advantage from Tuesday's home first leg. The hosts began brightly as Rovers were given an early warning. Álvaro Rey's free kick from the right was met by the head of Manuel Sánchez, but Ed McGinty got down well to make the save. Advertisement The Gibraltarians continued to look dangerous, as Pablo Rodríguez burst towards the goal but ballooned a shot well over. Yet Rovers grew into the game and took the lead in the 13th minute. Rory Gaffney latched on to a lofted through pass by Dylan Watts and finished with aplomb, chipping over the onrushing Bradley Banda and into the net. St Joseph's still carried a threat, though, and Facu Álvarez narrowly blasted a shot wide from the edge of the area after a well-worked set-piece routine. The home side were then nearly caught out down the other end. Watts' quick free kick found Graham Burke, whose first-time shot from a tight angle was parried away by Banda. As the half drew to a close, St Joseph's were enjoying plenty of possession and territory, but rarely tested McGinty, as the Hoops comfortably dealt with their attacks. A view of Rovers' fans at the match. Martin Seras Lima / INPHO Martin Seras Lima / INPHO / INPHO There was an early let-off for the League of Ireland outfit in the second half. Manolín got on the end of Ángel Martínez's corner, but the midfielder's powerful header was a few inches wide. Danny Mandroiu then went close. After receiving the ball on the edge of the area after a short corner, the ex-Lincoln City man guided an effort narrowly over the bar. After a relatively uneventful period, Rovers doubled their advantage with 23 minutes of normal time remaining. An initial effort from distance by Josh Honohan was saved. The rebound fell to Mandroiu, whose low shot found the back of the net via a wicked deflection. As the game entered its dying stages, Stephen Bradley introduced Michael Noonan and McGovern, and the pair made an instant impact. Noonan's cross from the left fell perfectly for the former Dungannon Swifts man, whose hooked first-time finish appeared to have all but ended the tie as a contest. Another substitute, Jack Byrne, then got in on the act. The midfielder collected a pass from McGovern on the edge of the area and curled an unstoppable shot into the corner of the net. Álvaro Rey's curled effort drifted over, and Manolín also headed just wide from a Juanma González corner as the hosts threatened a late consolation. But barring a disaster next week, the Hoops will need to come through just two more rounds to emulate last season's achievement of reaching the league phase. St Joseph's: 1. Bradley Banda 2. Linfield hit with €12,000 fine after Shelbourne Champions League game
UEFA HAVE FINED Linfield FC €12,000 and ordered a stand closure following their Champions League qualifier against Shelbourne last week. Linfield and Shelbourne drew 1-1 at Windsor Park, Belfast, on Wednesday, 16 July, with Joey O'Brien's Dublin side winning the tie 2-1 on aggregate. In a statement issued today, the Uefa Appeals Body confirmed its decision to fine Linfield €10,000 and order a stand closure for 'the racist and/or discriminatory behaviour of its supporters'. The club was also fined €2,000 for the lighting of fireworks. Advertisement The fines are effective immediately, with the stand closure — for one Uefa club competition match — suspended for two years. Shelbourne were fined €4,000 after the home leg at Tolka Park, for blocking public passageways in the Riverside Stand. Shelbourne CEO Tomás 'Mossy' Quinn confirmed the penalty in an email sent to season ticket holders on Tuesday. 'We ask all supporters to continue representing Shelbourne FC with pride and respect,' the former Dublin footballer wrote. 'Uefa matches bring increased visibility on supporter behaviour, and while we were happy with how the Linfield game in Tolka went, we still received a fine of €4,000 from Uefa or blocking of public passageways in the Riverside. 'Uefa tend to at least double the original fine each time there is a repeat behaviour so something for all to be aware of. To assist with this, our stewards will be checking tickets inside the ground to ensure only tickets allocated to the Riverside have access to that side of the stadium.'

Hoops all but through to next round of Conference League after seaside romp in Gibraltar
And Shamrock Rovers have done just that by taking a giant step towards the Conference League third qualifying round after a ruthless second-half display against St Joseph's sees the Hoops bring a commanding lead back to Tallaght for next Thursday's second-leg. Rory Gaffney's early goal gave the Hoops the perfect start and although the visitors still led by a single goal by the hour mark, three strikes in eight minutes from Danny Mandroiu, John McGovern and Jack Byrne put this tie firmly to bed. After last season's historic run to the knockouts, this summer the Dublin 24 outfit are aiming to become the first League of Ireland side to qualify for a league phase without coming through the champions' route. They have made the perfect start to that target and are now within touching distance of a third round tie against either Ballkani (Kosovo) or Floriana (Malta), while progression would also bring their pot up €900k. The last League of Ireland side to visit Gibraltar's Europa Point Stadium was Shelbourne, as Damien Duff's men were pushed hard by the hosts 12 months ago, but the Hoops' recent European experience showed here as they avoided this banana skin with clinical finishing to kill the tie. The Hoops went close in the early stages as a clever cross found an unmarked Gaffney, but his effort was straight at Banda. The Galway native may have wasted his first chance but he made no mistake with his second to hand Rovers a dream start on 13 minutes. A sweet through ball by Watts cut through the heart of the home defence and put Gaffney one-on-one with Banda. The 35-year-old raced forward to get there first and his deft flick beat the goalkeeper and found the net. After scoring 17 goals in last season's historic campaign, the Hoops were off the mark again. It was advantage Rovers but after a period of sustained pressure, St Joseph's broke on the counter and were able to win a corner after Ed McGinty misjudged a routine catch. A smart short corner routine teed up an unmarked Facundo Alvarez on the edge of the box but the Argentinian's effort flew just over the bar. After a brief water break amid the 22 degree heat, Rovers went close again as a clever short free kick put Graham Burke, the club's record goalscorer in the Tallaght Stadium era, through on the left flank, but the forward's strike was straight at the goalkeeper. The Saints asked a couple of questions of the Rovers backline but the experienced Roberto Lopes, Lee Grace and Dan Cleay, a trio with 129 European appearances between them, dealt with everything that came their way. Mandroiu should have done better with a chance just before the whistle, but was saved by the offside flag as the Hoops went in at the break full value for their one-goal lead. For all of their first-half dominance, Rovers were given a warning by the hosts minutes into the restart as centre-half Javi Paul went up for a corner and saw his header sail just wide of McGinty's goal. Mandroiu worked himself into a good position on 53 minutes but saw his curler go post the wrong side of the post, while Cleary went close moments later, the former Liverpool man forcing a good save out of Banda. A double switch by the hosts on the hour mark did little to change things, but it was Bradley's changes soon after which helped his side put the tie to bed. Six minutes after Mandroiu doubled the Hoops' lead with the help of a big deflection, summer signing McGovern marked his European debut with his first European goal barely a minute after entering the fray, the former Down inter-county footballer converting a low cross from the left to make it three. And the Hoops made it two goals in two minutes when substitute Byrne got in on the act with a fabulous strike from just outside the box. The two-time PFAI Player of the Year failed to score in Europe last season, but he's off the mark now. What threatened to be a tricky tie on the seaside soon turned out to be a comfortable walk in the park for the Hoops. A perfect start to what they hope will be another long, enthralling European adventure.
