Under BJD Attack, Chief Minister's "Seek Forgiveness" Post On Puri Stampede

NDTVa day ago

New Delhi:
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi has taken responsibility for the stampede during the Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri, which claimed three lives and sought forgiveness from devotees. Terming the incident a result of "unforgivable negligence", he has said a probe has been ordered and he has directed authorities to take exemplary action against those responsible.
The Chief Minister's post on X came shortly after his predecessor and BJD leader Naveen Patnaik hit out at the state government, saying that eyewitnesses have said there was no government machinery to manage the surging crowd that had gathered this morning outside the Gundicha Temple for a glimpse of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Shubhadra.
In his post on X, the Chief Minister said, "Due to the intense eagerness among devotees to have a glimpse of Mahaprabhu at Sharadhabali, an unfortunate incident occurred because of the resulting jostling and chaos. Personally, I and my government seek forgiveness from all Jagannath devotees. We express our condolences to the families of those devotees whose lives were extinguished at Sharadhabali and pray to Mahaprabhu Jagannath to grant them the strength to bear this profound sorrow."
"This negligence is unforgivable. An immediate investigation into the security lapses will be conducted, and I have directed that necessary steps be taken to initiate exemplary action against those responsible," he added.
I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the three devotees who have lost their lives in the tragic stampede at Saradhabali, #Puri and I pray to Mahaprabhu Jagannatha for the swift recovery of the devotees injured in this devastating incident.

Earlier, BJD chief Naveen Patnaik said the stampede exposes the state government's "glaring incompetence" in ensuring a peaceful festival for devotees. "Eyewitnesses report that the initial response to this horrific tragedy came from the devotees' relatives, with no government machinery present to manage the surging crowds, highlighting a shocking lapse in duty," he said.
Referring to the delay in the Yatra, he said it was "conveniently attributed to 'Mahaprabhu's wish', a shocking excuse that masks the administration's complete abdication of responsibility".
"While I refrain from accusing the government of criminal negligence, their blatant callousness has undeniably contributed to this tragedy. I urge the government to implement urgent corrective measures to ensure the smooth conduct of Adapa Bije, Bahuda, Suna Besha, and other key RathYatra rituals," the veteran leader said, expressing his condolences to the families of the victims.
Three persons, two of them women, died and 10 others were injured in the stampede. The incident occurred when the three Raths carrying idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Shubhadra were near Shree Gundicha Temple, about three kilometres from Jagannath temple, where the Yatra began.
Around 4.30 am today, the holy chariots were at the Gundicha temple and a large crowd had gathered for a darshan. As the crowd swelled, some people fell and a stampede began. Three people died on the spot. These include two women, Prabhati Das and Basanti Sahu, and 70-year-old Premakant Mohanty. All three, it is learnt, are from Khurda district and had come to Puri for the Rath Yatra.
Puri Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain said the bodies of the victims had been sent for autopsy and the examination would reveal the exact cause of death. He claimed adequate security arrangements were in place, but the crowd suddenly went out of control, leading to the tragedy.
During Rath Yatra, three grand chariots with the idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Shubhadra are drawn by a massive crowd of devotees. The holy chariots are taken to the Gundicha Temple. The three deities spend a week there before returning to the Jagannath Temple.

J&K: Offline registration for Amarnath Yatra begins today in Jammu at special centres set by Administration

Jammu (Jammu & Kashmir) [India], June 30 (ANI): The Amarnath Yatra is set to commence on July 3, and the registration is underway for devotees who have not yet registered for the Yatra through online mode. A large number of devotees have visited the special centre as registration begins today at the centres set up by the administration. The Yatra will begin on July 3 through the Baltal and Pahalgam routes. A devotee who came to the centre for registration said, 'The people are enthusiastic this time. There is no fear (due to the Pahalgam attack). Arrangements are good. The administration is with us.' Another devotee added, 'You can see the enthusiasm in the people. I have faith in Amarnath. They (terrorists) can do whatever they want; we will not be affected. I want to request all the people to visit J&K so that our army and government can say that we are not affected by their (terrorists) actions.' Ahead of the Amarnath Yatra, the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) has rolled out a robust multi-layered security plan along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) to ensure the safety and security of the pilgrims. Jammu-Srinagar Highway is one of the vital routes for thousands of pilgrims. The CRPF has intensified surveillance, deployed K-9 (dog) squads alongside its personnel along the vital Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, a key route used by thousands of pilgrims, and strengthened highway patrols, with a special focus on sensitive stretches, such as the Udhampur sector. The first batch of pilgrims will be flagged off from the Jammu base camp on July 2, 2025, while the Yatra will officially begin on July 3, 2025, via both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes. Earlier, in a preemptive effort to ensure safety during the upcoming Amarnath Yatra 2025, a joint mock landslide drill was conducted by the Indian Army, CRPF, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the JKSDRF (Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Response Force) at Samroli, Toldi Nallah, on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway on Sunday. The exercise aimed to assess emergency preparedness in case of landslides or natural disasters during the pilgrimage. The simulation involved rescuing stranded vehicles and providing immediate aid to injured pilgrims, with security and disaster response teams efficiently coordinating evacuation and medical assistance. Puri Rath Yatra stampede: Odisha minister sets 30-day deadline for administrative probe

An administrative investigation into the Puri stampede that left three people dead and 50 others injured would be completed within 30 days, said Odisha's Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan on Sunday, according to PTI. The stampede took place between 4 am and 5 am, when a large number of devotees had gathered near the Shree Gundicha Temple to see the deities on chariots that had arrived from the Jagannath Temple in Puri. 'The state government will take stern action against those responsible for the tragic incident,' Harichandan said, adding that Development Commissioner Anu Garg will submit her inquiry report to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. Hours after the stampede, Majhi had ordered the transfer of Puri District Collector Siddharth S Swain and Superintendent of Police Binit Agarwal. He also announced that Puri Deputy Commissioner of Police Bishnu Charan Pati and Police Commandant Ajay Padhi were suspended. The chief minister apologised on behalf of the Odisha government for the deaths and said that the incident was 'unpardonable'. A compensation of Rs 25 lakh each was announced for the families of those who died. During the Rath Yatra, the sibling deities Balabhadra, Subhadra and Jagannath are carried in chariots from the Jagannath temple to the Gundicha temple located 2.6 kms away, where they stay for nine days. This year, the festival began on June 27 and will end on July 5. On Sunday morning, a large number of devotees had gathered at Saradha Bali near the Shree Gundicha Temple to see the deities. Witnesses said that the situation escalated when two trucks carrying wooden logs tried to enter the area amid the crowds. Kishore Satapathy, the chief district medical officer in Puri, told PTI that all the injured persons had been discharged from a government health facility by 8 pm on Sunday.
