Carson Young rides eagle to 54-hole lead in Myrtle Beach Classic
Young, the 30-year-old former Clemson player from Anderson, South Carolina, had a 13-under 200 total at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
'It's been cool to have family out here and a bunch of support with friends,' Young said. 'I hear a bunch of `Go Tigers!' out there. ... It's cool to be here in my home state playing golf. It kind of just feels like old times.'
Harry Higgs was a stroke back after a 68.
'Thrilled to shoot under par.' Higgs said. 'I'm not great in the rain.'
The winner of the PGA Tour event — held opposite a signature event at the Truist Championship this week — gets a spot in the PGA Championship if not already eligible.
Winless on the PGA Tour, Young also birdied the par-5 13th and par-4 16th — playing a four-hole stretch in 4 under.
'Honestly, it was a lot of fun out there, even with the rain, just because I was making putts and making some chip shots,' Young said. 'Just played really solid golf. Nothing too flashy out there. But it was just really good golf.'
Mackenzie Hughes had a 70 to drop two shots behind. The Canadian shot a 63 to take the first-round lead and had a 69 on Friday to maintain a share of the top spot.
Victor Perez had a 66 to join Ryan Fox (68), Davis Shore (70), Norman Xiong (69) and Danny Walker (70) at 10 under.

Former Clemson quarterback Hunter Helms returns to the program in a player/coach role
Hunter Helms is back with Clemson—but not just as a player. The former Tiger quarterback will serve in a unique player/coach role for the 2025 season. Originally set to join Clemson's staff as a student coach, Helms is now expected to dress out and act as an emergency quarterback, similar to how Paul Tyson was used last year. Helms, a walk-on turned scholarship player, spent four seasons with Clemson from 2020 to 2023. He saw action in nine games, throwing for 218 yards and two touchdowns. His most notable performance came in 2020 against Georgia Tech, where he tossed two scores as a true freshman. After transferring to Rhode Island in 2024, Helms helped guide the Rams to a CAA Championship. He finished the season with 1,270 passing yards, five touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Thorbjorn Olesen makes hole-in-one on long par 3 Saturday at the 3M Open
Thorbjorn Olesen might not have even been out of bed by the time he lost his 36-hole lead on Saturday morning at the 2025 3M Open. Kurt Kitayama fired a 60 (and flirted with 59 for much of the day), entering the clubhouse at 17 under, three shots ahead of Olesen before the latter even teed off. Olesen — fired a 9-under 62 on Thursday, followed by a 66 Friday — had a pedestrian start to his third round. He made par on the first five holes before carding a birdie at the par-5 sixth and another par at the seventh. He stepped up to the tee at the 209-yard par-3 eighth, sitting in a congested pack of players at 15 under, two shots behind Kitayama. It took one swing for all of that to change. Olesen's tee shot hit the green, bounced once and rolled right into the cup. A proper ace for the 35-year-old from Denmark, who's seeking his first win on the PGA Tour in his 95th start. He joined a tie for the lead at 17 under just before 3:30 p.m. ET. It marked his first hole-in-one on Tour.
