Dakota Johnson criticizes Hollywood's lack of originality and explains Madame Web failure

Express Tribune14-06-2025
Dakota Johnson has voiced strong criticism of Hollywood's creative decline, calling out the industry's over-reliance on remakes and algorithm-driven decisions.
During her appearance on Hot Ones on June 12, the Fifty Shades of Grey star described the film industry as 'a bit of a mess,' blaming studios for making decisions by committee, often led by executives who "don't even really watch movies."
Johnson added that studios tend to replicate past successes rather than take creative risks, resulting in repetitive content. She expressed frustration with the lack of original storytelling and said she now prefers projects where she has more creative input, particularly as a producer at her company, TeaTime Pictures.
The actress also reflected on the disappointing performance of her 2024 film Madame Web, which earned her a Razzie for Worst Actress. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, she revealed the film shifted dramatically during production. 'It started as one thing and became something else,' Johnson said, distancing herself from the final result.
Due to the experience, Johnson confirmed she's unlikely to take on another superhero role, stating, 'I don't make sense in that world.'
Meanwhile, Johnson's personal life has also made headlines, as she and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin recently ended their nearly eight-year relationship. Sources claim the split was mutual and long in the making, with Johnson especially saddened by parting from Martin's children.
As she steps further into producing, Johnson seems focused on reshaping her Hollywood journey.

Tom Brady spotted on Ibiza yacht with Dakota Johnson and Kate Hudson amid Sydney Sweeney rumours

Last month, the two were reportedly seen dancing together until 2 am during Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's wedding celebrations in Venice. Dakota Johnson vacations in Europe with Kate Hudson weeks after breakup with Chris Martin

Dakota Johnson appears to be embracing single life, enjoying a European getaway with longtime family friend Kate Hudson. The trip comes just weeks after news broke that Johnson and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin had ended their nearly eight-year relationship. The Materialists star was spotted dining in Rome with Hudson, entrepreneur Douglas Chabbott, and her agent Maha Dakhil. During the evening, Ricky Martin briefly stopped by to greet the group, despite dining at a separate venue nearby. Photo: Backgrid Days later, Johnson and Hudson were seen cruising off the coast of Ibiza, as captured in images published by People. The pair spent the day in bikinis, relaxing on a white float with a friend, swimming in the sea, and enjoying the Mediterranean sun. Photo: Backgrid Their connection extends beyond recent travels—Johnson and Hudson are daughters of close Hollywood peers, Melanie Griffith and Goldie Hawn, respectively. Their shared history adds a personal touch to the timing of the trip. The girls trip follows reports of Johnson's split from Martin. Though the couple had recently been photographed on a yoga date, rumours of tension had circulated earlier in the year, only to be dismissed at the time. Neither Johnson nor Martin has addressed the breakup publicly.

Charlize Theron criticizes immigration policies during CTAOP Block Party 2025 in Los Angeles

Charlize Theron spoke candidly about global political and humanitarian issues during her fifth annual Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) Block Party, held Saturday on the Universal Studios backlot. The event raises funds to support health and safety initiatives for youth in Southern Africa, and this year, Theron didn't shy away from addressing what she sees as major global setbacks. Kicking off the evening, Theron delivered a passionate speech in which she described the current state of the world as regressive, stating, 'Here in Los Angeles, in the U.S., and across the globe, we're moving backwards fast.' She criticized restrictive immigration policies, arguing they 'have destroyed the lives of families, not criminals,' and pointed to the erosion of women's rights, the marginalization of queer and trans individuals, and the rise in gender-based violence. Theron, who immigrated to the U.S. as a teenager and was briefly deported at age 19 for overstaying a work visa, later became a U.S. citizen in 2007. Drawing from her personal experience, she emphasized that these policies are not abstract — 'this isn't just policy, it's personal,' she told attendees. She also highlighted the devastating impact of foreign aid cuts on HIV and AIDS programs in South Africa, stating these reductions have brought life-saving efforts 'to an absolute standstill.' Despite the challenges, Theron urged guests to find hope and power in activism, resistance, and solidarity. The event featured appearances by The Old Guard 2 co-stars KiKi Layne, Henry Golding, and Marwan Kenzari. Theron and Layne participated in a live edition of Hot Ones with host Sean Evans, while singer Reneé Rapp performed two songs. Since its founding in 2007, CTAOP has supported over 4.5 million youth and distributed nearly $15 million in grants across South Africa.
