RTA Awards AED 633 Million Contract to Expand Al Mustaqbal Street and Ease Traffic
The project will widen the street from three to four lanes in each direction, build bridges and tunnels totaling 1,700 metres, and boost traffic capacity by 33%, cutting travel time nearly in half.
The upgrades cover the stretch from Za'abeel Palace Street to Financial Centre Street and include three tunnels and a 450-metre bridge to improve flow at critical intersections. This development supports connectivity to landmarks such as Dubai World Trade Centre, Dubai International Financial Centre, Downtown Dubai, and Business Bay, benefiting an estimated half a million residents and visitors.
RTA Director General Mattar Al Tayer highlighted the project's integration with the ongoing Trade Centre Roundabout redevelopment and its role in enhancing access across Dubai's major road network. The plan also includes pedestrian walkways, cycling tracks, decorative lighting, and new urban spaces aimed at safer, more accessible streets and vibrant community life.
The Al Mustaqbal Street project progresses alongside other major infrastructure efforts like the Oud Metha and Al Asayel Streets upgrade and recent phases of the Al Khail Road development, all designed to support Dubai's growing population and urban expansion while reducing travel times and easing congestion.

Autonomous vehicles hit the tarmac at Dubai World Central
A fleet of autonomous vehicles have been deployed to support ramp operations at Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International airport (DWC). The global air and travel services provider, dnata, has rolled out six electric, self-driving baggage tractors at DWC, designed to tow luggage containers between aircraft and terminal buildings — a job traditionally done by human drivers. These autonomous vehicles, developed by TractEasy (EZTow model), can carry up to four baggage containers at once, travelling at speeds of up to 15 km per hour along pre-set routes. The move is expected to improve efficiency, safety and turnaround times on the ground. Staff who previously handled baggage transport are now being reassigned to more complex tasks, while automation helps reduce human error and streamline operations. The project, valued at AED 6 million, currently operates at Level 3 autonomy with minimal oversight. dnata plans to upgrade to Level 4 self-driving capability by early 2026. This initiative is also being used as a testbed to help shape future airport operations, especially as DWC prepares for massive expansion. The airport is set to become the largest in the world, with the capacity to handle up to 260 million passengers a year.

Dubai Metro Blue Line project to disrupt Mirdif traffic, RTA warns
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority on Tuesday warned motorists of traffic diversions in the Mirdif area as construction work is set to begin on the Dubai Metro Blue Line. The authority also advised drivers to use alternative routes where possible and to plan their trips in advance. The roundabout intersection between 5th and 8th street near City Centre Mirdif will be closed, with a diversion in place. This will also be the case in the opposite direction, from 8th to 5th street towards Algeria Street. An alternative access road will be provided for City Centre Mirdif mall visitors, the authority added, with an available U-turn in place for residents near Ghoroob Square. What is Dubai Metro Blue Line? Work began on the Metro project in June after an announcement from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai. The Blue Line is set to transform the north-east of the city, easing traffic congestion and establishing a direct link with Dubai International Airport. The Dh18 billion ($4,9 billion) project will include 14 new stations and add 30km to the Metro network, with 15.5km of it underground. The expansion is part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which has easier commuting among its top priorities to cater for a fast-growing population. Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority said the Blue Line would connect five principal urban regions of Dubai – Bur Dubai/Deira, Downtown/Business Bay, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai Marina/JBR and Expo City Dubai. When completed, the Metro network will be 131km long and encompass 78 stations served by 168 trains. The number of Dubai Metro passengers is expected to exceed 300 million in 2026 and reach 320 million by 2031, Dubai Media Office reports.
