Macron to co-chair Ukraine talks with Europe leaders while in UK: Elysee
"There will certainly be a discussion on how to seriously maintain Ukraine's combat capability," the Elysee Palace said, adding that Starmer and Macron will co-chair the meeting of Kyiv's allies by video link. The meeting on July 10 will come as US-led peace talks on ending the more than three-year-old war against Ukraine have stalled. The United States, Ukraine's biggest military backer since the launch of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, said Tuesday it was halting some key weapons shipments to Ukraine. Macron will pay a state visit to the United Kingdom from July 8 to July 10, when he will receive a royal welcome and address parliament. During the Ukraine meeting, Macron and Starmer will speak to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the French presidency said. The summit will touch upon the deployment of "a reassurance force" to Ukraine after a ceasefire, the Elysee Palace said. The discussions will also focus on "how to increase pressure on Russia to accept an unconditional ceasefire that it has consistently refused," the French presidency added. Moscow has in recent weeks ramped up missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, as US support for Kyiv has appeared to waver under US President Donald Trump. Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin spoke by phone on Thursday. The US president said he made no progress with Putin on ending the Ukraine war, as the Kremlin insisted Putin would stick to his aims in the conflict. © 2025 AFP

on Wednesday sent her man to Ibiza, via the Wild West, on a scorching second day of Paris Fashion Week Men's in the French capital. The French luxury label showcased its latest menswear collection for Spring/Summer 2026 inside its standalone store dedicated entirely to menswear in Paris's trendy district, the Marais. Outside, guests cooled down with spicy magaritas, balanced by Rori pizzas, mitigating a 33-degree heat, which actually proved the perfect accessory to the Parisian label's newest men's collection that celebrated Spanish fiestas and Americana desert cool. The collection, in dusty khaki, bronze, pale yellow, and light pink, embodied the weathered-by-the sun garb of an urban sojourner, whose cowboy shirting was given the Marant treatment via pocket cutouts and floral embroidery on the collar. Denim came laser-striped with graphic patterns, or printed with wildflowers, while straight-leg trousers and pleated preppy trousers offered a more refined silhouette for this season's bobo Marant man. Washed out blue work wear worked in a utility edge, capped off by footwear comprised of studded fringed moccasins, and a new sneaker model with slim soles, perfect for treading sandy terrain. Marant also loves a textured knit, seen in airy versions of her usual winter offerings, including fleecy earth-hued sweatshirts perfect for layering or when the temperatures drop at night. But the hero piece in the collection was the silk satin bomber jacket, with an embroidered oasis on the back, framed by the words "Ibiza", "Buenos Dias," and of course, "Summer." A reminder for heat-weary guests that the ritual of August summer break, where most Parisians escape to the south (or Wild West), is just around the corner.

France hands Shein €40 million fine for deceptive commercial practices
France handed fast-fashion giant Shein a €40 million fine on Thursday, following a year-long investigation that found the online retailer guilty of "deceptive commercial practices". France's Directorate for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention (DGCCRF) — the regulator in charge of French consumer law — revealed that Shein had misled its customers on price reductions, as well as on the scope of its "commitments concerning environmental claims". In its statement, the DGCCRF confirmed that Shein — a China-based company owned by Infinite Styles Ecommerce Limited (IELS) — had accepted the fine. The blow comes two months after the European Commission found Shein guilty of engaging in illegal commercial practices under EU law in May, following a coordinated investigation with national consumer protection authorities. Through analysing products listed as on sale on Shein's French website from October 2022 to August 2023, investigators found that 57% of products had no price reduction, 19% had a slight discount, while 11% of products actually had a price increase. "These practices, with their profusion of crossed-out prices and permanent promotions, give consumers the impression that they are getting a very good deal", stated the Directorate for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention. Under French regulation, the reference price for discounted goods is a product's lowest price during the 30 days which precede the start of a sale. On top of misleading customers, the French anti-fraud and competition agency found that Shein was "unable to justify the environmental claims made on its website", describing itself as a "responsible company" which limits its environmental impact by "reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25%." French authorities determined that these statements contradict the firm's business model, which is "based on an abundant supply of textiles at low prices." In 2020, fast fashion was estimated to account for 8-10% of global CO2 emissions. Although Shein may have been hit with a heavy fine, in recent years the company has become somewhat accustomed to public scrutiny. In January, British politicians were outraged when the online retailer refused to provide assurances that its products did not include cotton produced in the Xinjiang region of China, which has been linked to forced Uyghur labour. Meanwhile, an investigation published in 2024 by Swiss advocacy group Public Eye found that some workers at Shein factories were still working 75-hour weeks, despite the company's promises to improve conditions for employees.
