Hotels boom signals Sabah's east coast safe
SEMPORNA (July 6): The sprouting of new hotels, resorts, chalets and lodges in Semporna and its surrounding islands is a clear sign of growing confidence in Sabah's east coast as a safe and attractive destination.
Many of these accommodations, some built on stilts over the water, show that more tourists will continue to visit the region, driven by improved security.
Among the new developments are Seafest Regency and Pearl Bohey Dulang Resorts, both of which officially opened this year to meet the rising demand for accommodations in Semporna.
Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, who joined Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and foreign delegates on a site visit to the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone) on Saturday, said Sabah's tourism sector continues to show healthy growth.
The state recorded 1.44 million visitor arrivals between January and May this year, generating an estimated RM3.3 million in tourism receipts.
Joniston said the steady increase in visitor arrivals, particularly from international markets, is closely linked to Sabah's strong security framework, which is diligently maintained by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom).
'The fact that Sabah has reported zero kidnapping-for-ransom incidents over the past several years is a clear reflection of ESSCom's commitment to keeping our waters and communities safe.
'This complements the ongoing efforts of the Sabah Tourism Board to promote Sabah as a safe and welcoming destination,' he said.
Joniston was speaking at a dinner held in conjunction with the site visit, which involved 15 diplomatic representatives and officials from 10 countries namely the United States, Australia, Belgium, Ireland, Germany, Canada, New Zealand, China, South Korea, and Spain.
Present were Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Awang Alik Jeman; Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah Permanent Secretary Datuk Josie Lai; Joint Forces commander Datuk Zahani Zainal Abidin; and ESSCom Commander Datuk Victor Sanjos.
Earlier in the day, the delegation visited Pulau Omadal, Pulau Sibuan, Pulau Bohey Dulang and Pulau Mataking.
'We are seeing the positive results of these close collaborations. Tourists feel safe to explore Sabah, even in the ESSZone, and investors are also confident to keep investing here,' said Joniston who chairs Sabah Tourism Board.
According to the latest figures from the Sabah Tourism Board, international visitors accounted for 559,150 arrivals, while domestic tourists made up 879,420 arrivals.
China (243,688) remains Sabah's top international market, followed by South Korea (76,685).
Joniston also highlighted a strong increase in tourist arrivals from Europe, which recorded 35,240 visitors from January to May, a 25.6 per cent growth compared to the same period last year.
The top European source markets include the United Kingdom and Ireland (13,910 arrivals), Germany (3,854), and France (2,750).
Meanwhile, the United States contributed 9,356 arrivals, while Canada recorded 2,949 arrivals.
Joniston expressed confidence that Sabah's tourism sector will continue on its positive path, supported by the joint commitment of security agencies, local communities, and tourism industry players.
'We consistently maintain a positive outlook on the growth of tourist arrivals to Sabah.
'With ESSCom's strong support and the growing trust of our visitors, we are well-positioned to welcome even more tourists in the coming months,' he said.

Malaysia fully supports an Asean Power Grid, says PM Anwar
RIO DE JANEIRO: Malaysia fully supports Vietnam's aspirations for an Asean Power Grid — an infrastructure project to ensure energy security and sustainable growth. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia supported potential investment in renewable energy in southern Vietnam, including the seabed cable initiatives capable of strengthening two-way energy networks. Anwar said this after receiving a courtesy visit from Vietnam Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. "I look forward to a follow-up meeting with him at the Asean Summit this October," he said after the meeting. Anwar said the meeting provided an opportunity to assess the progress of cooperation between Malaysia and Vietnam across multiple fields, including trade, investment, defence, security, maritime affairs, fisheries, green energy, and petroleum. "I also raised the need to strengthen cooperation in combating illegal and unregulated fishing activities. "I also expressed hope that a more constructive approach can be forged to ensure the sustainability of marine resources and preserve good relations between the two countries," he added. Anwar also met Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, and both agreed to further elevate the relationship between our two countries through cooperation in various fields. "Also discussed were the latest developments in Gaza and the humanitarian situation in Iran," Anwar said. Anwar, who also met with World Trade Organisation director general Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, spoke about Malaysia's commitment to multilateralism and the need for the body to remain inclusive and responsive. Malaysia, he said, fully supported full reforms for WTO as it needed a breath of fresh air to steer itself in the midst of current issues like digital trade, weather policies without affecting the rights of developing nations.

Airbus Helicopters inks two MoUs with Malaysian aerospace, defence players
(Front) Dubrule and Nonee pose for photographs during the signing ceremony. KUCHING (July 7): Airbus Helicopters is collaborating with key players in the Malaysian aerospace and defence sectors to foster industrial cooperation in aerospace technologies and enhance military helicopter maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capabilities. This follows two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed during Minister of Defence Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin's official visit to France, underscoring shared commitment of both parties to innovation and regional security, said Airbus in a statement today. Under the first MoU, Airbus Helicopters and the Coalition of Defence Industry (CDI) Malaysia plan to pursue industrial opportunities with the latter's member companies specialising in aerospace and defence development. This MoU marks the first of its kind between Airbus and the Malaysian defence industry, establishing a dedicated framework to drive military helicopter innovations, growth, and development in the local defence sector, said Airbus. Under the second MoU, Airbus Helicopters will partner with local MRO service provider Global Turbine Asia (GTA) to advance in-country helicopter component MRO capabilities. This strategic collaboration aims to strengthen Malaysia's defence ecosystem and accelerate industrial growth in alignment with the nation's plans to acquire new helicopters for its armed forces and related governmental agencies. CDI (M) president and GTA executive chair Datuk Nonee Ashirin Mohd Radzi said they look forward to deepening the collaboration with major European industries, building on the Malaysian aerospace industry's enduring partnerships with leaders such as Airbus. 'We are committed to reinforcing these relationships and exploring new areas of cooperation, ensuring sustained innovation, growth, and long-term value for all stakeholders,' she said. Airbus Helicopters head of Asia-Pacific Vincent Dubrule said these partnerships underscore Airbus' strong commitment to Malaysia's long-term goal of building a resilient, self-reliant defence ecosystem. By deepening local industrial growth and expanding MRO capabilities, he said they are strengthening the nation's aerospace and defence sectors, supporting technological advancement, and enabling greater industrial sovereignty. 'As Malaysia looks to acquire helicopters for key missions like tactical support, combat search-and-rescue and anti-surface warfare, these partnerships aim to strengthen local expertise, promote technology transfer and build autonomy. 'Airbus sees CDI (M) and GTA as trusted partners aligned to advance these priorities,' added Dubrule.
