
Respiratory device by AIIMS-R nursing officer gets patent
The Indian Patent Office in New Delhi granted a utility patent for the device.
Named 'Highly Oxygenated Aerosol Controlled (HOAC) Combo', it is a closed-system respiratory support unit designed to reduce the risk of airborne infections during nebulization, sputum sampling, incentive spirometry, and low-flow oxygen therapy. It offers protection to both patients and healthcare workers.
The HOAC device is currently in the functional prototype development phase, with efforts underway to secure funding.
This will be followed by pilot studies and clinical validation, paving the way for its large-scale implementation in India and globally.
Arokiaraj U showcased this device at the India Innovation Summit 2025, held on March 18–19 at Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre, New Delhi. The Department of Health Research (DHR) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) organised the summit.
The device has also been published on the ATLAS of Innovation platform, a research platform supporting the development of new technologies for TB elimination.
Lt. Gen. Ashok Jindal (Retd), executive director and CEO of AIIMS-Raipur, congratulated Arokiaraj, calling the development a significant achievement for AIIMS-Raipur. AIIMS-Raipur nominated Arokiaraj for the National Florence Nightingale Award and the National Science Award 2025 in recognition of his contribution.
Arokiaraj expressed gratitude to the medical superintendent, the CTVS department, and the AIIMS-Raipur administration for their support and guidance.

Mobile device to make TB screening simpler
Guwahati: Researchers at Tezpur University have developed a cost-effective and mobile device for detecting Tuberculosis (TB) cases using a smartphone. The innovative diagnostic equipment, designed by a team led by Prof. Pabitra Nath from the physics department, was specifically engineered to serve communities in rural and isolated regions where sophisticated healthcare infrastructure is limited. A TU spokesperson said the new device stands out as it does not need any chemicals or dyes for TB detection like in conventional techniques, but uses the natural glow (autofluorescence) of TB bacteria for detection of the disease. "The device has a built-in heating system to improve test accuracy and can be operated using a smartphone," he said. Its affordability at under Rs 25,000 and lightweight design of less than 300 grams makes it highly portable. These characteristics make it particularly suitable for regions with basic healthcare facilities. "While LED-FM offers higher sensitivity than conventional optical microscopy, it has several drawbacks. "The device developed by the TU researchers leverages the principle of autofluorescence. The team's key innovation lies in the integration of a heating element within the sensor system. By raising the temperature of the bacterial sample, the system enhances the natural fluorescence signal from mTB cells, enabling trace-level detection without the use of stains or dyes," he research group comprises two scholars, Biprav Chetry and Chunuranjan Dutta, from the Physics Department, alongside JP Saikia and Santanu Goswami from the Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Department, and Abhijit Gogoi representing Labdig Innovations and Systems Pvt. AIIMS-P showcases mobile unit for disaster response
Patna: AIIMS-Patna on Tuesday hosted a live demonstration of the Basic Health and Immediate Support Modular Cubes (BHISMCUBE) aimed at enhancing disaster preparedness and emergency response capabilities. The BHISMCUBE system was demonstrated as a rapid-response, mobile medical unit capable of functioning in mass casualty situations. "The modular cube system enables the setup of a fully functional emergency hospital at disaster sites within 12 to 45 minutes, depending on the training and efficiency of the personnel deployed," an AIIMS official said. "Each BHISMCUBE includes 72 RFID-tagged boxes, each equipped to address a specific type of medical emergency. The RFID technology allows for quick identification and access to the necessary medical supplies, enabling responders to act within the "golden hour", the critical period in which timely medical intervention can save lives," the official added. The core demonstration was led by Dr Tanmay Ray, retired chief surgeon of the armed forces and chief innovator of BHISMCUBE. Along with his team, Dr Ray elaborated on the structure, functionality and advantages of the modular health system. "BHISMCUBE is a revolution in emergency health response. A rare case of pregnancy has left doctors in the Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh stunned. The patient, a 30-year-old woman from the region, had been experiencing persistent abdominal pain and finally decided to seek medical MRI scan of her abdomen revealed an astonishing finding, a 12-week-old pregnancy not in her uterus, but in her foetus was discovered in the right lobe of her liver, a diagnosis confirmed by Dr KK Gupta, the radiologist who examined her.
