Euro 2025: Norway stars Hegerberg and Graham Hansen return for first quarterfinal in 12 years
Now 12 years on, Ada Hegerberg and Caroline Graham Hansen — a Ballon d'Or winner and a runner-up in the voting, respectively — are team leaders for Norway's first game in the knockout rounds since Euro 2013, against Italy on Wednesday.
'People expect things from us now,' Graham Hansen acknowledged Tuesday, calling their situation today a 'complete difference.'
'We were like 18 and nobody expected nothing from us. We also just wanted to show what we could contribute at the time,' she said while sitting alongside Hegerberg.
'I wasn't playing with much pressure at all (in 2013),' said Graham Hansen, who started in the final that Norway lost 1-0 to Germany. 'I was just going for it.'
Graham Hansen and Hegerberg have combined to score 102 national-team goals, and the first of those at a major tournament was in that quarterfinal game in 2013 in Sweden. Hegerberg got Norway's third in a 3-1 win over Spain with a curling shot that went in off a post.
Both have added one goal each in Switzerland this month to help Norway sweep the group stage with three victories. Hansen's crafty 84th-minute goal sealed a 2-1 win over Finland and sent Norway into the last eight with a game to spare.
'The start couldn't be any better,' Hegerberg said in translated comments. 'We can enjoy that we have such a strong position.'
A new generation also is emerging, and one highly rated prospect made her mark when Norway was already sure to top its group that included Switzerland and rested both standout forwards.
Signe Gaupset, who turned 20 last month, scored twice early in a 4-3 win over Iceland on Thursday. She was youngest player in the tournament's 41-year history to do that and later added two assists for Frida Maanum's goals.

'She's young, and that is additional motivation to take the opportunities you get,' Graham Hansen said of Gaupset, as if describing her younger self. 'She's a big talent.'
Norway coach Gemma Grainger said Gaupset's performance 'wasn't much of a surprise to any of us' though would not be drawn if the Brann winger will retain her place on the left flank to face Italy.
The winner Wednesday in Geneva will return to the city next Tuesday for a semifinal against either Sweden or England.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Lionel Messi's MLS-record streak of scoring multiple goals in five straight matches ended on Wednesday night in Inter Miami's 3-0 loss to FC Cincinnati. Cincinnati got a first-half goal from Gerardo Valenzuela and two second-half strikes from Evander to remain one point behind the Philadelphia Union in the Eastern Conference standings. Cincinnati had four shots on target in the first 16 minutes to none for Inter Miami, and took a 1-0 lead when Valenzuela angled a shot from the left side of the box for his fifth goal of the season. Messi's first shot came in the final minute of first-half stoppage time and landed comfortably in the arms of keeper Roman Celentano. Evander's 14th goal of the season, and 50th in MLS, put Cincinnati ahead 2-0 less than five minutes into the second half. Cincinnati (14-3-6) also had a two-goal lead on Saturday against Columbus but lost 4-2 to the Crew. Cincinnati held on this time by neutralizing Inter Miami's attack, led by Messi. Evander sealed the victory when he made it 3-0 with a goal off a rebound when Luca Orellano's shot caromed off the keeper. Messi had a chance in the 78th minute, but his close-range shot was saved by a diving Celentano. The 38-year-old Messi has played 90-plus minutes in eight straight games, including four Club World Cup matches. Shane Gillis' awkward ESPYS monologue draws mixed reactions
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Comedian Shane Gillis ' opening monologue as host of the ESPYS went over awkwardly in front of some of the biggest names in sports on Wednesday night. Early on, he called out various famous faces in the Dolby Theatre crowd, including retired WNBA star Diana Taurasi, who was to receive the Icon Award later in the evening. Gillis said, 'Give it up for her' after calling her 'Deanna.' The camera showed an unsmiling Taurasi shaking her head. Gillis quickly caught his mistake, saying, 'My bad on that.' Gillis moved on to WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark, who wasn't on hand. 'When Caitlin Clark retires from the WNBA, she's going to work at a Waffle House so she can continue doing what she loves most: fist fighting Black women,' he joked. While some in the audience laughed, others appeared uncomfortable. Rodrigo De Paul to join Leo Messi at Inter Miami, AP source says
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Another close friend of Lionel Messi will soon play in South Florida. Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul has agreed to contract terms with Inter Miami, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The 31-year-old De Paul will leave Atlético Madrid — where he's played for four years — for Major League Soccer on a short-term contract with Inter Miami that could potentially lead to a multiyear deal. He had one year left on his contract at Atlético Madrid. ESPN first reported the deal. De Paul and national team buddy Messi hope to continue to elevate Inter Miami, which has reached historic heights since Messi's arrival in 2023. De Paul could be in uniform with Inter Miami in time for the start of Leagues Cup play later this month, though his exact arrival date is uncertain, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the signing has not been announced. The deal, which has been in the works for several weeks, comes as negotiations between Messi and Inter Miami on a contract extension remain ongoing. The nine-time Ballon d'Or winner's current contract expires at the end of December, and he is expected to return to the club that he's played with for the past two years. The signing of De Paul adds another veteran with whom Messi already has chemistry, along with 37-year-old Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez, 38, and Jordi Alba, 36.
