Solidarity Camp supports Global March to Gaza

Express Tribune16-06-2025
A solidarity camp was held at the Karachi Press Club in support of the Global March to Gaza, drawing participation from political and religious leaders, civil society members, human rights activists, and students.
Organized jointly by the Palestine Foundation Pakistan, Federal Urdu University, and think tank KAP, the camp aimed to express support for the international land convoy to Gaza.
The convoy, which began in Algeria and reached Egypt after crossing several countries, has been blocked at the Rafah crossing by Egyptian authorities, who reportedly used force against the peace activists.
Speakers at the camp harshly criticized the Egyptian government for obstructing humanitarian aid and holding up the Gaza convoy, and held the United States complicit in the blockade. They also condemned Israel's recent attacks on Iran, terming them acts of state terrorism.
Participants accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza by blocking food and aid while bombing civilians, and condemned the international community and Muslim leaders for their silence and inaction.
The speakers demanded an immediate severance of diplomatic ties with Israel by Muslim states and called on Pakistan's government to take a firmer stance in support of both Palestine and Iran.

PARTLY FACETIOUS: ‘Have we ever been rated as investment grade?'

'Hallelujah!' 'Hallelujah is Hebrew and can be broken down into two words – halel means joyous song, praise, and Yah is a shortened form of Yahweh or Jehovah, Allah.' 'Why did you do that?' 'Do what? I merely translated…' 'Why did you translate the Hebrew Yahweh into the Muslim Allah?' 'Dear me, learn to distinguish between Judaism as a religion and Zionism as a policy of a state that justifies genocide and…' 'It's hard given what Israel is doing, but anyway that's not why I said Hallelujah.' 'I know why you said it. Because we have been upgraded by Standard and Poor's from CCC (substantial risk) to B- (highly speculative) which, as per the definition on their website, retains us in the junk category.' 'I believe we would need six more upgrades to get out of the junk category and into the investment grade category.' 'Have we ever been rated as investment grade?' 'Never, I believe the highest rating we got was B+.' 'There you go so we need only two more upgrades to reach the historic high.' 'Why do you keep the bar so low?' 'Why do you take it up so high – I mean to me, it means that you are succumbing to hopelessness and last I heard this is not the Islamic way and…' 'I was merely trying to point out to the SPs that it's rather a long road and…' 'SPs?' 'Same Pagers – we need to aim higher than the historic high, and we need…' 'OK, but remember one thing. In a world gone crazy…' 'Yes, but there is change – the under 40s in the West including the US, and President Trump's support base are all challenging the Israel First Policy of successive US administrations…' 'That has not changed policy yet, that would require another twenty to thirty years, when these under 40s take over the reins of government and…' 'Hamm and you have Germany that allowed the US to blow up the Nordstream pipeline that had supplied cheap Russian fuel to German industries resulting in German deindustrialization, you have Ursula Von Der Layen, a German heading the European Union, hell-bent to compel member states to borrow hundreds of billions to set up a defence industry capable of fighting Russia, and…' 'Hatred does more harm to the hater than the hatee I reckon, and especially when there is unreasoning hatred….' 'I heard the cabinet collectively hates The Man Who Must Remain…' 'Good that you mentioned collective, because the 2016 Supreme Court verdict in the Mustafa Impex case insisted that the cabinet instead of the prime minister can take a decision…' 'Don't be facetious.' 'Hallelujah.' Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Two decades too late justice

EDITORIAL: On Monday, the Mumbai High Court acquitted 12 Muslim men who had been convicted in connection with the 2006 Mumbai train bombings, a case long seen as emblematic of communal bias within India's legal and political systems. Arrested shortly after the blasts, the men spent nearly two decades in prison — five of them on death row and seven serving life sentences following a 2015 trial court verdict. The High Court's decision to overturn these convictions, citing a complete failure by the prosecution to prove the charges, underscores severe deficiencies in the country's criminal justice system, and raises troubling questions about due process, investigative integrity, and the protection of the rights of the accused, particularly in terrorism cases. The 2006 attacks, which killed 187 people and injured over 800, remain among the deadliest acts of terrorism in India. In the immediate aftermath, facing intense pressure to produce swift results, law enforcement agencies made several arrests. Thirteen men were eventually convicted, one of whom died of Covid-19 in 2021. Now, 12 of them have been fully exonerated. In its judgement, the two-member bench of the Mumbai High Court delivered a scathing critique of the prosecution's case, stating it had 'utterly failed' to establish the guilt of the accused. This rebuke clearly indicates that the convictions were driven by external pressures and systemic prejudice — particularly against Muslims. It exposes how communal bias, institutional pressure, and weak investigative practices can combine to produce devastating miscarriages of justice. That five of these men were sentenced to death on such flimsy grounds is deeply distressing and should worry all good, honest people in India about the use of capital punishment — especially when applied to marginalised communities. The case highlights the need for stronger safeguards in terror-related investigations, especially in high-pressure, emotionally charged environments. Moreover, the failure to identify and prosecute the actual perpetrators means justice remains elusive for the victims and their families. At the same time, the wrongful incarceration of innocent men for nearly 20 years represents a grave injustice. These men endured imprisonment, stigma, and the terror of possible execution; their families bore the burden in silence. Accountability must now extend to those responsible for the original investigation, whether their failures stemmed from incompetence, negligence, or communal bias. True justice now demands police accountability, and reforms to ensure that such miscarriages of justice are never repeated in the so-called 'world's largest democracy'. Formation of commission to probe blasphemy cases: IHC suspends single bench's order

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC), Thursday, suspended a single bench's order of directing the government to constitute a commission within 30 days to probe blasphemy cases. A division bench comprising Justice Khadim Hussain and Justice Azam Khan issued the order in an Intra Court Appeal (ICA) filed by Rao Abdul Rahim advocate against the decision of Justice Sardar Ijaz Ishaq Khan. In the ICA, the petitioner urged the court to declare the single-bench decision null and void, and to dismiss the original petition as inadmissible. He maintained that the single bench exercised suo motu powers and issued directions without hearing the respondents' version. The petitioner further argued that the original petitioners had multiple legal forums available to them, including trial courts, but chose not to approach them. He said that forming a commission to probe criminal allegations contradicts established legal procedures and precedents set by the higher courts. In this connection, Justice Ejaz directed the federal government to constitute a commission within 30 days to probe blasphemy cases. He issued the directions in petitions filed by the victim families seeking formation of judicial commission to investigate the cases. The bench directed the federal government to form a commission within 30 days to investigate blasphemy cases. It also directed that the commission formed by the federal government must complete its proceedings within four months. In this matter, the victim families, represented by advocates Abid Saqi and Usman Warraich, had petitioned the high court for the formation of a judicial commission. They mentioned a report by the Punjab Special Branch titled 'The Blasphemy Business'. The report alleged that a suspicious gang had been entrapping youth in blasphemy cases and extorting money from them after filing complaints with the FIA in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The petitioners asserted that this gang is the complainant in nearly 90 per cent of blasphemy cases registered by the FIA. It added that operating under the name 'Legal Commission on Blasphemy,' the group is said to be consisted of both men and women targeting poor and lower-middle-class Muslim families. They revealed that a concerning pattern emerges in the FIRs: out of over 400 alleged victims, 70 per cent are young men and women in their twenties or younger while many of the victims are professionals, including engineers, Hafiz-e-Quran, and degree holders in various fields. They further said that they had approached the federal government with a formal request dated August 4, 2024, seeking the formation of an inquiry commission on the Special Branch's report. However, no action has been taken to date. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
