Philippines, UAE sign agreement to combat cybercrime, drug trafficking
Signed by Philippine Interior Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla and UAE Interior Minister Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, the new deal focuses on cybercrime, drug trafficking and human trafficking.
'Transnational crimes with global networks powered by new technologies and the ease of cross-border movement of persons and criminal syndicates need more international cooperation and partnerships,' Alfonso Ver, Philippine ambassador to the UAE, told Arab News on Tuesday.
'This is one concrete step to address the growing menace above … We have gone into new and heretofore unexplored areas of bilateral cooperation, moving beyond the issues of OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers), migration and oil.'
The Philippines and the UAE celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations last year.
The two countries have been working to expand security ties over the past few years, with discussions ongoing for a wide-ranging bilateral defense pact.
In 2021, the Philippines posted a defense attache in the UAE, making it the only country in the Middle East where Manila has such representation.
The two countries also signed several treaties on extradition, mutual legal assistance and transfer of prisoners in February.
Ver said the new agreement was a 'milestone' that provides a 'strategic framework' that will help guide Philippine-UAE 'future engagements in a more structured, sustainable, and effective' manner.
It is also expected to promote the exchange of best practices and expertise.
'We discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the two friendly countries and develop cooperation in the security and police fields,' Sheikh Saif said in a post on X, referring to his meeting with Remulla.
'This underscores our shared commitment to supporting effective international institutional cooperation to enhance the security and stability of societies.'
Cybercrime and trafficking have been growing concerns for countries like the Philippines.
More than 200 Filipinos were among several thousand people freed in late February and March from online scam centers run by syndicates operating along Myanmar's border with Thailand, where many of them are believed to have been recruited and trafficked by criminal gangs.
Lured by well-paid job offers in Thailand, they were released in a weeks-long, highly publicized crackdown by Thai, Myanmar and Chinese forces.

Hungary's ambassador bids farewell to Saudi Arabia after a decade of diplomacy
RIYADH: Hungarian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Balazs Selmeci bid farewell to the Kingdom as he concluded his decade-long tenure. Selmeci visited Arab News headquarters in Riyadh on Monday, where he met with Editor-in-Chief Faisal J. Abbas. The envoy said his goals were to strengthen political and diplomatic relations, expand economic ties and promote a positive image of Hungary in Saudi Arabia. At the same time, Selmeci sought to highlight Saudi Arabia's changes and opportunities in Hungary, as well as the hospitality and kindness of the Saudi people. 'I believe I achieved good results in both areas, thanks to the support of Saudi institutions, the people and my colleagues at the embassy,' Selmeci told Arab News. Reflecting on his time in the Kingdom, Selmeci highlighted the significant changes he witnessed over the years. He singled out the closing ceremony of Riyadh Season at King Fahd Stadium as a moment that symbolized Saudi Arabia's rapid transformation. Saudi society showed commitment to the reforms, leading to a more open and globally connected country. Over more than 10 years in Saudi Arabia, Selmeci observed the transformative impact of Vision 2030, including societal reforms and economic diversification. He added that social reforms — such as involving women in the workforce, increasing their participation across sectors, welcoming international visitors and events, and balancing tradition with modernization — laid the foundation for economic progress. 'Vision 2030 itself required great courage from the leadership and strong support from the Saudi people,' Selmeci said. From the outset, Saudi society showed commitment to the reforms, leading to a more open and globally connected country, he added. 'These social and ongoing economic reforms have increased Saudi Arabia's international presence and influence,' Selmeci said. He added that the reforms have allowed foreigners to better understand the Kingdom and build trust, and that the dedication of both the government and the people provides a strong foundation for success. Selmeci began his tenure as ambassador on Nov. 14, 2019, presenting his credentials to Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on Dec. 12, and to King Salman on Jan. 8, 2020. Before then, he served in Riyadh as deputy head of mission from March 2014 to June 2018, marking more than a decade since he first began working to strengthen Saudi-Hungarian relations. During his tenure, he oversaw the first-ever bilateral meeting between the two countries' foreign ministers in the Kingdom, as well as the first bilateral meeting between their defense ministers. Selmeci said that among the economic cooperation projects during his tenure, his favorites were the reestablishment of the Saudi-Hungarian Business Council, the launch of the Saudi-Hungarian Digitalization Cluster and the creation of the first Saudi-Hungarian joint venture in the Kingdom. He also extended his best wishes to the Saudi people, encouraging them to continue working with determination toward a better life, making the country more prosperous while preserving its traditions and heritage. Asked what message he would leave for his successor, Selmeci expressed hope that they would build on these achievements and accomplish even greater successes, while creating as many memorable experiences as he did. He added that his successor could count on the full support of the Saudi leadership, officials, the people, the diplomatic corps and embassy staff. In his closing remarks, the ambassador said he planned to return to the Kingdom in the future — 'even as a simple tourist, to walk in King Salman Park, visit Qiddiya or attend Expo 2030.'

Kurdish Administration Reiterates Call for Decentralized Syria after Damascus Meeting
After the Syrian government utterly rejected decentralization system, the Kurdish parties had reiterated their demand of an approach that provides them with a measure of their de facto autonomy, according to Arab News. Syria's Rejection of Decentralization In March, Syria's President Ahmad Al-Sharaa and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Chief Mazloum Abdi signed an agreement to integrate the civil and military institutions of Kurds into the Syrian government. However, the implementation of this deal was held up by differences between both parties. On Wednesday, the pair held a meeting with a US envoy to discuss the stalled efforts. During the meeting, the new government stressed its rejection to 'any form of division or federalization.' It also urged SDF fighters to integrate into the army. President Al-Sharaa and Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack Kurdish Call for Decentralized Syria Meanwhile, the Kurdish administration called 'for a pluralistic democratic system, social justice, gender equality, and a constitution that guarantees the rights of all components' of society. The Kurds expressed their aspiration of being 'effective partners in building a new Syria, a decentralized Syria that embraces all its people and guarantees their rights equally.' Significant Kurdish Conference In May, Kurdish parties hosted a significant conference to introduce a unified vision for the country's future after the ousting of Bashar Assad, according to AFP. As a major component of Syria, Kurds 'must present a solution and a project proposal for the future of Syria,' Eldar Khalil, an official in the Kurdish Democratic Union Party, said. Moreover, Abdi called for 'a new decentralized constitution that includes all components' of society. 'We support all Syrian components receiving their rights in the constitution to be able to build a decentralized democratic Syria that embraces everyone,' he added. Turkish Opposition to Decentralization Turkey has also rejected any plans that may undermine Syria's central government or threaten its sovereignty and territorial integrity, according to Reuters. 'Turkey does not accept any initiative that targets Syria's territorial integrity, that will damage its sovereignty, or that allows weapons to be carried by others not in the Syrian central authority,' a Turkish Foreign Ministry source said. Moreover, President Tayyip Erdogan said in May that decentralization demands in Syria were 'nothing more than a raw dream.'
