Ledecky bags 22nd title as Popovici savours ‘scary' gold
SINGAPORE : Katie Ledecky won the 22nd world title of her legendary career today to close in on Michael Phelps's record as fellow Olympic champions David Popovici and Kaylee McKeown also struck gold.
American great Ledecky cruised to a dominant 1,500m freestyle gold, touching the wall in 15:26.44s, having threatened her own world record of 15:20.48s.
The masterful win in Singapore moved Ledecky four short of the retired Phelps's career tally of 26 world gold medals.
'Growing up it was very inspiring to watch World Championships, Olympic Games that Michael was in, trying to learn from the very best,' said Ledecky, 28.
'I was always a student of the sport.'
Ledecky's win gave the American the sixth world 1,500m freestyle title of her career.
She is also a nine-time Olympic gold medallist.
Second was Simona Quadarella of Italy in 15:31.79s and third Australia's Lani Pallister in 15:41.18s.
Ledecky was the red-hot favourite going into the race, having qualified for the final over 10 seconds faster than nearest challenger Pallister.
She also went into the race owning the top 24 1,500m freestyle times ever, and set the second-fastest time in history in April behind her own record.
Pallister pushed her with a fast early tempo and Ledecky was on world record pace until late in the race.
In the end she fell short of the mark but still clocked the fifth-fastest time ever.
'Lani took it out there. I knew she would be out fast and I just wanted to get out fast, but comfortable enough that I could go from there,' said Ledecky.
'I'm happy with the time and happy with the swim.'
It is Ledecky's first gold medal of the Championships, after picking up a bronze behind Summer McIntosh in the 400m freestyle on Sunday's opening night in Singapore.
Ledecky is set to go head-to-head with Canadian phenomenon McIntosh again in the 800m freestyle.
Popovici claimed a thrilling 200m freestyle gold – then revealed he had very nearly pulled out.
The 20-year-old Romanian reeled in US rival Luke Hobson to take the title in 1:43.53s, with Hobson settling for silver (1:43.84s) and Japan's 18-year-old Tatsuya Murasa taking bronze (1:44.54s).
Popovici said afterwards that he had seriously considered withdrawing from the competition before it started, even going as far as looking at flights home.
'It was a mental thing and it had to do with the fear of seeing my real potential,' said Popovici, who reclaimed his world crown from 2022.
'That's very scary. And so I'm really glad I didn't quit.'
'Nerve-wracking'
Australia's McKeown beat a recently dislocated shoulder, nerves and old rival Regan Smith of the US to win the 100m backstroke gold, narrowly missing the world record.
McKeown powered to the wall in a championship record 57.16s, with Smith having to once more settle for second, just 0.19s behind.
Katharine Berkoff, also of the US, took bronze.
McKeown's victory underlines her status as the undisputed force in women's backstroke.
'It's always very nerve-wracking, especially off the back of the Olympics,' said the 24-year-old, who won the 100-200m backstroke double at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics.
'I was probably a bit more nervous than I would like to have been tonight.'
McKeown's latest triumph came after hurting her shoulder in the lead-up to Singapore.
'It's been quite irritated but I've got a good medical team and physios to help me get through.'
Germany's Anna Elendt won the first world title of her career in the women's 100m breaststroke, coming home in 1:05.19s.
American Kate Douglass was second in 1:05.27s, with China's Tang Qianting third in 1:05.64s.
South Africa's Pieter Coetze won the men's 100m backstroke in 51.85s in a surprise, ahead of Italy's Thomas Ceccon (51.90s) and France's Yohann Ndoye-Brouard.

Manchester United finished last season 15th in the Premier League, their worst showing since relegation in 1973-74, managing only 11 wins and nine drawn from 38 matches. 'I think a lot of people have suffered from this,' Fernandes said. 'The fans pay more for the tickets and we really appreciate all the efforts they do for us. 'So it's up to us now players to repay it on the pitch.' Fernandes said the club is working to improve from team and staff to facilities. 'It's every detail. Every small thing matters,' Fernandes said. 'At this football club, you can't do anything wrong on the pitch and off the pitch because it's too big worldwide. 'The culture of this club was winning. It was there. And we need to bring back that.' Everton's James Tarkowski brought down Amad Diallo in the penalty area and Fernandes blasted in the shot from the spot to lift Man United ahead 1-0 in the 19th minute. French-born Senegalese international Iliman Ndiaye equalised for the Toffees in the 40th minute, tapping in off a pass from Senegal's Idrissa Gana Gueye. Mason Mount, who entered the field barely 10 minutes earlier, took a pass from Fernandes and curled in a shot past Jordan Pickford in the 69th minute to put Manchester United back in front. But Everton pulled level in the 75h minute when a ball directed back by Diallo deflected off Manchester United Ayden Heaven and into the back of the Man United net for an own goal. Spot-on set up passes by Senegalese left back El Hadji Malick Diouf, signed only on July 15, led to both West Ham goals in the finale of their US pre-season tour at Atlanta. 'Both goals are down to him, the quality that he's got, you can see that,' Bowen said of Diouf. 'He has only been here a few weeks but you would think he has been here years. 'He's humble. He's a brilliant guy for the group and he's obviously a brilliant footballer as well. We're very excited to see what he can continue to do here.' Diouf's centering ball found England's Bowen in the box, but he was forced to slide a pass left to German teammate Fullkrug, who fired in a shot from point-blank range in the 24th minute. Bowen found the net in the 67th minute, taking a Diouf pass while making a run into the middle of the box then flicking a right-footed shot into the far left side of the goal. Bournemouth had plenty of chances in the first 15 minutes but found the woodwork to squander early opportunities. 'What I liked was the character about the group. We didn't have the best start we wanted but we stuck in there. We were together. We were a team,' Bowen said. 'That was one of the good things to see, the togetherness and the spirit when things aren't going as well at the start. You stick together, you motivate each other, you come through and you win the game.' West Ham lost 2-1 to Manchester United to open the round-robin friendly tournament but bounced back to defeat Everton 2-1. 'The positives are that we've had three really good, competitive games against Premier League opposition,' Bowen said. 'The Man United game, I thought we started slowly but put it a good positive performance and were unlucky to lose on the day.'

A second-half goal from Mason Mount had United on course for victory in Atlanta, Georgia after Fernandes's opener was cancelled out by Iliman Ndiaye, but a bizarre 75th-minute own goal by Ayden Heaven gifted Everton the draw on Sunday. The draw put a slight damper on the Old Trafford club's tour of the US, after promising victories over West Ham United and Bournemouth last month. 'It's been important for developing how we want to play and getting the new players involved too,' Fernandes told NBC Sports. 'We didn't want to finish in this way. Our performance wasn't the best and we were a little bit lazy today. 'We want to avoid that because with laziness you can pay at any moment,' Fernandes added. United had their worst-ever Premier League campaign in the 2024-2025 season, finishing 15th in the standings, and are looking to strengthen in the transfer window, signing Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo – both of whom started against Everton. 'It's improving. But it's not the place it needs to be. I don't want to take a dig at anyone but the club is doing the best they can in terms of the financial situation they talk about,' Fernandes said. 'But it was crystal clear we needed more competition for the players that were here, more quality to get everyone to step up a little more to get to the XI, and I think that is what the club are trying to do. 'Hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that,' he added. Asked about Fernandes's comments, manager Ruben Amorim told reporters: 'I think I'm happy for the players to have that feeling. It's saying that they understand the situation. So, it's a good feeling. 'I think the momentum of the tour was perfect. We had the weeks to work with a good environment, good feeling, and then we go back to Carrington (training ground) and we are near to start the season. 'We are going with the feeling that we need to do a lot of things (better),' Amorim said. United begin the new Premier League season against Arsenal on Aug 17.
