ATP roundup: Cameron Norrie knocks out Lorenzo Musetti in D.C.
Cameron Norrie of Great Britain charged back for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 upset of Italian No. 2 seed Lorenzo Musetti in the Round of 32 of the Mubadala Citi D.C. Open on Tuesday in Washington.
Norrie, a five-time ATP titlist and former Wimbledon semifinalist, has slipped to No. 41 in the world rankings, but that didn't matter Tuesday, as he saved 9 of 11 break points while converting 4 of 7 chances to break Musetti's serve. Next, Norrie will face No. 14 seed Brandon Nakashima, who beat Ethan Quinn 6-3, 6-4.
No. 15 seed Gabriel Diallo of Canada also won 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 32 against Hungary's Fabian Marozsan. Round of 64 action wrapped up with victories by Aleksandar Kovacevic, Zachary Svajda, Jaume Munar of Spain and China's Yibing Wu and Yunchaokete Bu.
Three Round of 32 matches remained Tuesday evening, including one pitting No. 4 seed Ben Shelton against Mackenzie McDonald.
Generali Open
Austria's Filip Misolic had a 34-19 edge in winners and overcame 43 unforced errors in a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 upset of Argentine No. 5 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the Round of 32 in Kitzbuhel, Austria.
Misolic will hope to continue his home-soil run when he faces Botic van de Zandschulp in the next round. The Dutchman outlasted Chile's Nicolas Jarry 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
France's Arthur Cazaux also prevailed in three sets, hitting 10 aces and beating Ignacio Buse of Peru 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Other winners included Brazil's Thiago Seyboth Wild, German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann and Argentina's Thiago Agustin Tirante.
Plava Laguna Croatia Open
Third-seeded Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Argentina needed two hours and 33 minutes to push past Italy's Francesco Passaro 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3 in the Round of 16 in Umag, Croatia.
Carabelli won 13 of 15 net points and advanced to meet Spanish qualifier Pablo Llamas Ruiz, a 6-3, 6-3 winner over France's Terence Atmane.
In a pair of Round of 32 matches, Croatia's Dino Prizmic beat Denmark's Elmer Moller 6-4, 6-2, and the Netherlands' Jesper de Jong prevailed 6-3, 6-3 over Croatian Mili Poljicak.

Iloski made MLS history on June 25 when he scored four goal in a 12-minute span against the Vancouver Whitecaps, the fastest four-goal effort in league history. The California native scored 43 goals in 70 matches over two seasons with Orange County SC in the USL Championship, winning the league's Golden Boot in 2022 with 22 goals in 31 games.

Fresh off rout, Blue Jays vie for series win vs. Rockies

That said, the Blue Jays made themselves at home in Denver on Monday night with a 15-1 romp over the Colorado Rockies in the opener of a three-game series. Toronto will have a chance to clinch the series on Tuesday night when it sends Jose Berrios (7-4, 3.84 ERA) to the mound against Colorado's Anthony Molina (0-0, 7.27) in a battle of right-handers. Molina allowed one run on three hits in an inning in relief last season in his lone career appearance against the Blue Jays. Berrios has faced the Rockies twice in his career, winning both starts over 14 2/3 shutout innings. Tuesday will be his first time pitching in Colorado, and he can build off Eric Lauer's start in Monday's victory. Lauer was 0-6 with a 12.73 ERA in seven starts in Denver before allowing just one run over six innings on Monday night. Beating the Rockies in the opener was a positive sign for the Blue Jays, who had lost four of their last five games on the road and are 28-29 away from home. (They are 38-19 at home.) Monday's victory also gave the Blue Jays just their third win in the last nine games overall and comes after they dropped two of three games against Kansas City. 'This group is so good at turning the page to the next day,' Toronto manager John Schneider said after Sunday's 7-4 loss in 10 innings to the Royals. 'That's, I think, one of the many reasons why we are where we are.' Colorado won its third straight home series by taking two of three games from Pittsburgh but needs at least one victory against Toronto to avoid a losing record on the homestand. The Rockies also need to get off to better starts; they've trailed by at least four runs in each of the last four games. 'We've been down early, especially in the first inning,' interim manager Warren Schaeffer said. 'That's not a good recipe for longevity in a season. We need better performances out of our starters.' One of the sparks for the recent surge has been 23-year-old rookie Warming Bernabel, who made his major league debut and has been hitting ever since. He has hit safely in eight of the nine games he has played in and started his career with a seven-game hitting streak. His hot start earned him National League Player of the Week honors after he batted .462 with two home runs and seven RBIs. Bernabel has become the everyday first baseman after Michael Toglia struggled and was optioned to Triple-A for a second time. 'It's a very good thing, competition -- it's a good thing when you have a guy like Bernabel that came up here and basically earned a spot,' Schaeffer said. 'That's what you want, especially in a team in our situation. You want guys to force their hand and earn a spot. Then guys that lose their spot, they need to go to work and get better so they can come back and get their spot back.'

Top-seeded Alexander Zverev rallies to reach Toronto semis
(Photo credit: Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images) Top-seeded Alexander Zverev, bouncing back after squandering two set points in the first set, rallied for a 6-7 (8), 6-4, 6-3 win over 18th-seeded Alexei Popyrin in the quarterfinals of the National Bank Open on Monday in Toronto. The 28-year-old German advances to face either 11th-seeded Karen Khachanov of Russia or 26th-seeded Alex Michelsen of the United States in the semifinals. The latter two players faced off late Monday night. Zverev is one match victory away from his fourth final of the season. He won the title at Munich, Germany, and wound up as runner-up at the Australian Open and at Stuttgart, Germany. Following a first set in which Zverev failed on two chances to claim the tiebreaker, he established his dominance in each of the final two sets by jumping out to 3-0 leads. Popyrin managed to pull level in the second set before Zverev broke again in the last game. The third set featured just the lone service break. 'I had to tell myself, even though I lost the first set, I thought we were both playing actually quite well,' Zverev said. 'I did one or two mistakes in the end (of the tiebreaker), and I was very unlucky with the net cord on set point. But all in all, I thought it was a high level, and if I continue playing that way, I'm going to get my chances -- and that's what I did.' Popyrin finished with a slight edge in winners, 30-28, but that was more than offset by his 45 unforced errors. Zverev gave away only 30 points. Zverev is headed to an ATP 1000 semifinal for the first time this year. He has seven career ATP 1000 titles, two of them coming last year in Rome and Paris.
