KUCHING, May 13 — The 15-year-old driver of the out-of-control car in Jalan Teo Kui Seng major accident earlier this year will be charged in the Magistrates' Court tomorrow.
Kuching district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said investigations into the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 have been completed, and the investigation papers have been referred to the Attorney General (AG)'s Chambers in Putrajaya.
'The AG's Chambers has decided that the teenager will be charged with two offences; Section 41(1) for causing death by reckless driving and Section 39(1) for underaged driving (below 16 years of age),' he said in a statement.
Alexson also said the teenager's 35-year-old father will be charged under Section 33(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for the offence of a parent or guardian leaving a child without reasonable supervision.
The multi-vehicle crash claimed five lives — three men and a woman aged between 16 and 45, who were pronounced dead at the scene, and a 16-year-old boy, who died while receiving treatment at the Sarawak General Hospital.
The teen driver sustained a neck injury and was detained by the police.
Dashcam footage shared on social media showed an out-of-control car heading from the direction of Jalan Lapangan Terbang towards Jalan Stutong Baru flying through the air into the opposite lane and colliding with multiple vehicles. — The Borneo Post

RM3.6m lost to umrah fraud since 2024 until May this year, says deputy minister

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 — Since 2024 until May this year, 204 complaints related to umrah fraud, with losses totalling RM3.6 million, have been reported, said Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, (Religious Affairs) Zulkifli Hasan. He said the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (Motac) also recorded 58 complaints about Haj package fraud, amounting to over RM600,000 in losses. 'According to the Foreign Ministry, the Malaysian consulate general in Jeddah reported that at least 97 Malaysians were detained and deported by Saudi authorities during this year's Haj season. 'Another 34 individuals were fined for trying to perform Haj without valid visas,' he said during the question and answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. Zulkifli shared these figures in response to a question from Zahari Kechik (PN-Jeli) about the financial losses faced by Haj and Umrah pilgrims in 2024 and 2025, and what the government is doing to stop such scams. Regarding the recent case of 47 Malaysians scammed by a Haj fraud syndicate, Zulkifli said 25 police reports were made on June 23. Investigations revealed violations of of Section 21 A, C, and D of the Haj Fund Act 1995 by those organising the trips, despite not being licenced Haj travel agents (PJH) for the 2025 season. Two individuals were charged in court on July 29 and could face penalties under the Haj Fund Act. Motac has also been informed of these violations and may suspend or revoke the company's licence for putting the public at risk. Zulkifli added that the individuals caught trying to perform Haj with tourist visas dealt with non-licenced agents. 'TH (Pilgrims Fund Board) can only take action against licenced agents, including canceling their licence, blacklisting them, or imposing fines,' he said. — Bernama

Terengganu man conned of over RM100,000 in forex scam linked to Facebook ‘friend's sister'

KUALA TERENGGANU, Aug 5 — An elderly man lost more than RM100,000 after falling prey to a foreign currency exchange (forex) scam. Kuala Terengganu police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said that the 77-year-old joined a forex scheme on May 28 after being coaxed by the sister of a woman he had befriended on Facebook. Azli said that in the first week, the victim made a capital payment of RM3,000 and was given a fake receipt as proof that the money had been deposited into his forex account. 'The suspect also sent him a WhatsApp screenshot showing the profit he had made. Excited, the victim continued to make additional capital investments of RM69,000. 'The victim then tried to withdraw his profits but was instructed to make another payment of RM35,844, claiming that the profits he made involved elements of money laundering,' he said in a statement today. Azli said the victim, upon realising he had been deceived, lodged a police report, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. — Bernama

Kelantan teacher pleads not guilty to four charges of sexual offences against 11-year-old male pupil

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 — A teacher pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, today to four charges of child sexual offences against an 11-year-old male pupil in March and May last year. Syahril Faiza Zakaria, 51, was accused of committing two of the offences inside a car at 2pm in March 2024, and the other two in the toilet of a resort at Pantai Cahaya Bulan, also in May of the same year, according to a report by national news agency Bernama. All four charges were framed under Section 14(b) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, punishable under Section 14 of the same Act, read together with Section 16. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and whipping for each charge. Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Faiz Fitri Mohamad did not offer bail, citing public interest, the victim's welfare, and the accused's position of trust. Defence lawyer Mohd Saifullah Che Mat appealed for bail, arguing that his client was not a flight risk, had been suffering from a heart condition since May, was diagnosed with severe depression, and was unmarried. He added that his client, previously serving at a primary school in Tumpat, had since been transferred to the district education office. Judge Zulkifli Abllah granted bail at RM30,000 for all charges, with additional conditions that the accused must not contact the victim directly or indirectly, and must report to the police once every two months. The court set September 10 for mention and document submission.
