Hawaii, worldwide love pouring in for Dakota Briley's recovery
20-year-old Dakota Briley was unloading surfboards on the North Shore of Oahu near Chun's Beach on Saturday when the unthinkable happened. Police said an 18-year-old man was driving westbound on Kamehameha Highway when he crossed into the eastbound lane and hit Briley, pinning him between two vehicles on the shoulder of the road.
Briley is currently hospitalized at Queen's Medical Center, but his loved ones are clinging to hope — even in the darkest moments.
'I didn't want to believe it. I was in denial. And then I found out details. My friend was first there on the scene, and he was like, 'it's really bad,'' said Jason Magallanes, a longtime Briley family friend. 'But the good news is, I overheard the doctor saying yesterday that the bleeding and swelling stopped in his head, and there's some excessive bleeding in his hips, or pelvis, as well and they put that together, and they stop the bleeding with that.'
Dakota also suffered fractures to his legs, skull, ribs and spine. His road to recovery is far from clear, but those that know him best said he has always been a warrior.

'Working out, surfing, eating right. He's huge on diet, you know, 'Do the right thing and put the right stuff in your body and take care of your body.' And that's why I know he's strong. He's in a good position. And he's going to pull through but we do need prayers,' said longtime Briley Family Friend Tanoai Reed.
'If anybody is going to make it out of this, it's going to be the Dakota,' Magallanes said. 'He's stubborn. He has a fire and, he's a warrior.'
Friends and family said the support has poured in from across Hawaii and the globe — over $130,000 have been raised on the GoFundMe for Dakota's medical expenses.
Loved ones told KHON2 that Dakota will undergo a major surgery at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17 where doctors will operate on his severely-damaged spine — they are still confident that continued prayers from the public and help from the doctors inside Queen's will see him through.
'Dakota, uncle loves you,' Reed said. 'You're going to make it through this. And, you know, no matter what happens afterwards, we're going to be there together and you got a huge, long life ahead of you.'
'Dakota, I love you. Just keep fighting and I know, I know God's going to heal you,' Magallanes said. 'The love is real overwhelming and, and we're all here for you.'

Trump asked the Philippine leader when they first spoke in November, according to an official familiar with the call, sending his regards to the onetime first lady of the Philippines and a fellow cultural figurehead of the 1980s and 90s. Trump has long placed a premium on family ties and genetics as a measure of people's value, including for foreign leaders and members of his staff. He appeared to be impressed in the lead-up to Tuesday's meeting with Marcos Jr.'s connections to an infamous period in Philippine history, according to a person familiar with the matter. Trump and Imelda Marcos first crossed paths decades ago as members of the international jet set — he as a New York businessman and she as the wife of strongman leader Ferdinand Marcos, famous for her extravagant taste financed by public funds and amassing a massive collection of shoes while her husband imposed martial law. The two attended parties together in New York, including during the period when Imelda Marcos and her husband were forced into exile in Hawaii after being unseated by a popular uprising. They fled the country with crates of gold and pesos. Images show Trump seated alongside his second wife Marla Maples and the glamorous Imelda Marcos at a birthday party in New York in 1991 — ten months before she returned to the Philippines after six years to face graft charges. She went on to have a successful political career herself, elected four times to the House of Representatives for the Philippines, and saw her family name restored to power when her son — known universally by his nickname Bongbong — was elected president in 2022. It wasn't until 2018 that Imelda Marcos was finally convicted on graft charges and sentenced to 42 years in prison; she has remained free in her advanced age (she is 96). For her son, the familial connection may prove useful as he seeks to avoid tariffs and deepen longstanding US-Philippines defense agreements. He will be the first southeast Asian leader to meet Trump since his second term began. Marcos hopes to leverage deep historic ties with the Philippines — the oldest US alliance in the Pacific and a key counterweight to China — for an advantageous trade deal that would avoid the 20% tariff Trump has threatened. Ahead of Tuesday's visit, Philippine officials voiced hope the family ties would translate into a positive meeting. 'That connection, that personal connection obviously is significant in the sense that we all know President Trump is very personal in his relationships with world leaders. And I think that that connection tells you how he values friendship and it is an advantage obviously for the Philippines that President Marcos has that personal connection with President Trump,' Philippine Ambassador to Washington Jose Manuel 'Babe' Romualdez said. 'I didn't see it': Surfer bitten by shark in second attack at Florida beach this month
An 18-year-old surfer was bitten by a shark at New Smyrna Beach in Florida, marking the second such attack at the beach this month. The male victim sustained a shark bite on his foot while surfing on Friday, July 18, Aaron Jenkins, deputy chief of Volusia County Beach Safety, confirmed to USA TODAY. Sam Hollis, a surf instructor, told NBC's Today he was able to swim to safety after the sudden attack that happened "in the blink of an eye." "It just kind of felt like something clamping down really hard, and then it kind of felt hot, because the teeth obviously, you know, started to dig into my skin," Hollis told Today. "I didn't see it beforehand, I didn't hear it or anything. It just kind of yanked me," Hollis told the outlet. It marks the second shark attack this month at the beach, which is known as the self-proclaimed "Shark Bite Capital of the World," according to The Daytona Beach News-Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network. On July 6, a 40-year-old man was bitten by a shark on his right forearm as he swam in the ocean, per the News-Journal. So far in 2025, four shark bites have been reported in Volusia County, Jenkins said. Surfer bitten by shark had non life-threatening injuries, officials say Around noon local time on July 18, an 18-year-old male surf camp instructor was paddling to a sandbar when he attempted to jump and push his board over a wave, according to a report of the incident. He told officials he barely saw the shark but said it was large, according to the report. Lifeguards arrived on scene to treat the man, who was then transported to a hospital with "non life-threatening injuries," Jenkins said. Four shark bites in one Florida county this year, officials say Jenkins said the July 18 incident marks the fourth shark bite in Volusia County, Florida, so far this year. Most recently, a 40-year-old man was bitten on his arm at New Smyrna Beach on July 6. He sustained non life-threatening injuries, according to the News-Journal. Two remains found under fallen Hilo banyan tree

HILO, Hawaii (KHON2) — Hawaii Island Police have recovered the remains of two women who were found within the debris of a downed banyan tree in Hilo. Hawaii County crews continue to clear the tree. A cause has yet to be determined. On Sunday, July 20, the Hawaiʻi Fire Department extracted the remains of two adult females from deep within the banyan tree. Police say crews worked several hours to cut the large branches to allow access to the victims. Both women were pronounced dead at 4:28 added that autopsies will be conducted later this week to determine the exact cause of death.
