What does ‘sesquipedalion' even mean? Shah Rukh Khan channels inner Shashi Tharoor after his tweet on National Award win

Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan recently achieved a landmark moment in his illustrious career—winning his first National Award after more than 30 years in the industry. He was honoured for his powerful performance in Atlee's 2023 action blockbuster Jawan. The recognition marks a significant milestone, acknowledging SRK's enduring impact on Indian cinema. Politician Shashi Tharoor congratulated Shah Rukh Khan on his National Award win, calling him a national treasure. SRK humorously responded, referencing Tharoor's elaborate vocabulary while expressing gratitude for the praise. SRK's witty reply to Shashi Tharoor's congratulatory message Following the announcement, politician and wordsmith Shashi Tharoor extended his congratulations, posting on social media, 'A National Treasure wins a National Award! Congratulations.' True to his wit, Shah Rukh responded with a humorous and self-deprecating quip: "Thank u for the simple praise Mr Tharoor… Would not have understood something more magniloquent and sesquipedalian… ha ha," he joked. For context, the words magniloquent and sesquipedalian are a playful nod to Tharoor's famously elaborate vocabulary. Magniloquent means speaking in a lofty or grandiose style. Sesquipedalian refers to the use of long, often obscure words—or someone who tends to use such words. Shah Rukh pays gratitude after winning the award After receiving the National Award, Shah Rukh expressed heartfelt gratitude in a video message: "Namaskar and Adab. Needless to say, I'm overwhelmed with gratitude, pride and humility. To be honoured with the National Award is a moment that I will cherish for a lifetime." He thanked the jury, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, his directors, producers, family, and fans. In true SRK style, he ended with: "This award is for you, as each award is. And yeah, I would love to spread my arms for you and share my love, but I'm a bit indisposed. But don't worry, just keep the popcorn ready. I'll be back in theaters and soon on the screen. So till then, just with one hand. Ready!" In his caption, he added: 'Thank you for honouring me with the National Award. Thanks to the jury, the I&B ministry… Iss samman ke liye Bharat Sarkar ka dhanyawaad. Overwhelmed with the love showered upon me. Half a hug to everyone today.' Jawan is a high-octane action thriller that showcases Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role, portraying both a soldier and a vigilante. Directed by Atlee, the film combines mass appeal with social commentary, tackling themes like justice, corruption, and father-son dynamics. With its stylised action sequences, emotional depth, and blockbuster soundtrack, Jawan resonated with audiences across the country, becoming the highest-grossing Hindi film ever in India.

Rajinikanth recalls painful memory of college mate mocking him as a coolie: 'Asked me to carry luggage into his tempo and...'

Veteran actor Rajinikanth, who is gearing up for his much-awaited action thriller, Coolie, started his acting career with the 1975 Tamil film, Apoorva Raagangal. His die-hard fans are aware of the fact that he used to work as a bus conductor in Bengaluru before entering films. But do you know that Rajinikanth also took up the job of a coolie? Rajinikanth was once mocked by his college mate when he used to work as a porter. Rajinikanth recalls his coolie days during film's trailer launch During the trailer launch of Coolie, Rajinikanth recently recalled his initial days when people would yell at him during his porter job. The megastar shared a painful memory of meeting his college mate whom he used to mock earlier. The man asked Rajinikanth to carry his luggage and gave him Rs 2 for the job while mocking the latter. 'At that moment, he ridiculed me and said, 'How arrogant you were in those days', mocking my job. That was the first time I broke down crying in my life,' the 74-year-old megastar said. Rajinikanth calls Coolie director Lokesh Kanagaraj the 'real hero' In the same event, Rajinikanth referred to his Coolie director, Lokesh Kanagaraj, as a 'real hero' of the upcoming film. The veteran actor called him 'one of the most successful commercial directors' who has created a storm with an amazing star cast. More about Coolie Produced by Kalanithi Maran under the banner of Sun Pictures, Coolie is scheduled to be released on August 14, 2025, coinciding with the Independence Day weekend. 7 Heroines, 1 Director, 1 Cinematographer: The Unsung Dynasty Of Tamil Cinema

The Kapoor family has long been a dominant force in Bollywood. Beginning with Prithviraj Kapoor and Raj Kapoor, followed by Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, and Rajiv Kapoor, they ruled the industry for decades. Today, their children continue to reign at the box office. Similarly, the Bachchan family stands among the most renowned in the Hindi film industry. However, the film family we focus on here is from Kollywood, not Bollywood. Remarkably, seven heroines, a director, and a cinematographer from a single family have made a significant impact on Tamil cinema. This is the family of Tamil cinema's 'first dream girl', T.R. Rajkumari. The first family member to enter films was S.P.L. Dhanalakshmi, who rose to prominence as an actress in the 1930s. In 1935, the film Parvathi Kalyanam, the debut production of National Movie Tone, was made by Manickam. While searching for talented actors, he discovered Dhanalakshmi in Thanjavur after seeing her dance performance and cast her as the film's heroine. Dhanalakshmi's sister, Tamayanti, also appeared in several films during the 1930s. Later, T.R. Rajkumari joined the family's cinematic legacy. In the late 1930s, director K. Subramanyam visited S.P.L. Dhanalakshmi and noticed a lively young girl named Rajay, who was strikingly beautiful. Believing that beautiful girls often become actresses, he renamed Rajay to Rajkumari and cast her in his 1941 film Kaccha Devayani. Rajkumari was Dhanalakshmi's niece. While earlier family members had limited success, T.R. Rajkumari rose to fame as Tamil cinema's dream girl, paving the way for more relatives to enter the industry. Among them was T.R. Ramanna, a notable director and producer, famous for being the only producer to make films starring both MGR and Shivaji. T.R. Rajkumari's daughter-in-law, Kushalkumari, also became a heroine during the 1970s. Later, Dhanalakshmi's daughters, Jyothi Lakshmi and Jayamalini, established themselves in the 1980s as glamorous heroines in Tamil and Telugu cinema. Jyothi Lakshmi gained fame for the song Kattodu Kuzhal Aada in MGR's film Periya Idathu Penn (1963) and also performed in the hit song Kana Karunguilile in Sethu (1999). Jayamalini, meanwhile, gained cult status for her role in the classic film Jaganmohini (1978). Jyothi Lakshmi acted in around 300 films, while Jayamalini appeared in over 500. The next generation included Jyothi Meena, who performed alongside Koundamani in Ullathai Allitha (1996) and danced with stars like Vijay and Ajith. She also played character roles in numerous films. Jyothi Meena's father was a cinematographer, continuing the family's connection to Tamil cinema. However, at present, no member of this family is active in the film industry. Jyothi Meena was the last actress from the family; she married a doctor and settled down. Her sons have also become doctors, marking the shift of this film dynasty to the field of medicine.
