
Customs dept seizes RM13m worth of drugs after crippling distribution syndicate
Its assistant director-general (Enforcement), Raizam Setapa@Mustapha, said the operation was conducted in Batu Caves, Salak Selatan, Sentul and Subang Jaya and at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Cargo.
He said his team, detected the use of moving services was one of the new modus operandi used to smuggle drugs, when it inspected a mover company's warehouse in Batu Caves on April 10.
'The team seized 90 boxes of various sizes in the said warehouse, and found 344 compressed blocks of suspected heroin, weighing 122.85 kg and worth RM11.5 million, inside four boxes containing modified speakers to be sent to Australia, while the remaining 86 boxes contained household items,' he told reporters at a press conference at the JKDM Narcotics branch in Kampung Jijan here today.
Raizam said that this case is the first time it detected a drug syndicate using mover services to send goods using containers to Port Klang.
In a separate case, Raizam said that on May 13 at about 9.45 pm, a team of officers along with detection dogs (K9) from the JKDM Narcotics branch inspected three boxes of goods at a logistics company's warehouse at the KLIA Cargo.
He said they found five transparent plastic bags containing white crystal powder suspected to be methamphetamine, with an estimated weight of 5,105 grammes (gms) and valued at RM163,360, hidden among safety boots for export abroad.
Meanwhile, on April 3, a raid at a condominium in Salak Selatan uncovered 5,000 gms of MDMA (methylenedioxy-methamphetamine) worth an estimated RM835,000. Following that, another raid at a condominium in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, found 6,176 gms of ketamine and 763 gms of cannabis, worth RM311,165.50.
According to him, the modus operandi involved using air courier services to import drugs into the country, and a local male suspect was arrested and charged in court.
Meanwhile, on April 10, the team found 5,106 gms of suspected methamphetamine crystal powder worth RM163,392 when raiding a courier company's premises in Subang Jaya.
'The discovery of the drugs was the result of inspecting a parcel containing footwear. The syndicate's modus operandi was to hide drugs inside modified footwear for export via air courier services. Following that, a local male suspect was arrested and charged in court,' he said, adding that all cases are being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

However, no plea was recorded from Wan, who appeared before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin, after the charge was read out to him. The charge under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952, carries a punishment of either the death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping with a minimum of 15 strokes. The court set Aug 19 for mention pending the chemist's report. Wan was ordered to be remanded further pending the date, as the charge against him has no provision for bail. Vietnamese nationals among four charged with drug trafficking in Johor Bahru
JOHOR BAHRU: Four individuals, including two Vietnamese nationals, were charged in court today over drug trafficking and possession involving more than 13 kg of narcotics. The case, linked to a major drug bust by Johor police, could result in severe penalties, including the death sentence. The accused—Ching Hin Leong, 46, Tay Wei Bin, 36, Pham Thi Quy, 26, and Nong Thi Nhinh, 29—were jointly charged with trafficking MDMA powder (12,090 grams) and MDMA pills (375 grams). The offences allegedly took place at a condominium unit in R&F Tanjung Puteri on June 19. Under Section 39B(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, read with Section 34 of the Penal Code, they face either the death penalty or life imprisonment, along with a minimum of 15 cane strokes if convicted. Two Vietnamese women among four charged over massive RM3m MDMA haul in Johor
JOHOR BARU, July 3 — Four individuals, including two Vietnamese women, were charged in the Magistrate's Court here today with five charges of drug trafficking and possession. In the court before Magistrate A. Shaarmini, they were jointly charged with two counts of drug trafficking, namely MDMA powder weighing 12,090 grams and MDMA pills weighing 375 grams, at Unit No. 25-05, Mercu 1, Block A3-1, Jalan Tanjung Puteri 1, R&F Tanjung Puteri, at about noon last June 19. The charges were brought under Section 39B(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty or life imprisonment and, if not sentenced to death, to be whipped with not less than 15 strokes of the cane upon conviction. No plea was recorded from all of them, namely Ching Hin Leong, 46, Tay Wei Bin, 36, Pham Thi Quy, 26, and Nong Thi Nhinh, 29, as the case involved the death penalty, which is under the jurisdiction of the High Court. They were not allowed bail, and the court set Sept 3 for mention. All the charges were framed under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and are punishable under Section 39A(1) and Section 12(3) of the same act, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code. If convicted, they can be sentenced to between two and five years' imprisonment and whipping for the first charge, while the other two charges carry a prison sentence of up to five years or a maximum fine of RM100,000 or both. In a separate proceeding before the same Magistrate, Ching was charged with another three counts of drug trafficking and possession. On the first count, he was charged with trafficking 4,645 grams of MDMA at a unit at Block B, Vista Puteri Apartment, Jalan Bayu Puteri 1, at about 3.10 pm. The charge, under Section 39B(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, provides the death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping of not less than 15 strokes, if not sentenced to death upon conviction. For the second and third charges, he was alleged to be in possession of 79 grams of ketamine and 28 grams of nimetazepam at the same location and time. Both charges were brought under Section 12(2) and are punishable under Section 12(3) of the same act, which provides imprisonment of not more than five years or a fine of up to RM100,000 or both upon conviction.
