Anwar meets Italian Muslim leaders in Rome, calls for unity and moderation in face of Islamophobia

Malay Mail03-07-2025
ROME, July 3 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is on a three-day working visit to Italy, took the opportunity to meet with members of the Muslim community here on Wednesday.
During the meeting, he held discussions with Comunita Religiosa Islamica Italiana (COREIS) vice-president Imam Yahya Pallavicini and Islamic Cultural Centre of Italy-Grand Mosque of Rome secretary-general Abdellah Redouane.
Anwar said the session provided a platform to exchange views on strengthening the development of the ummah, including addressing Islamophobia through wisdom and diplomacy.
'I reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to promoting Islam that upholds moderation, tolerance and harmony through education, dakwah and international collaboration, with the Muslim community in Italy,' he said after the meeting.
As a symbol of goodwill and the sharing of knowledge, Anwar also presented contributions to the Muslim community in Rome, including a special edition of the Quran and 10 Italian-translated copies.
Italy is home to an estimated 2.7 million Muslims.
Meanwhile, Anwar expressed his appreciation to translator Andrea Fais and publisher Stefano Bonilauri for their efforts in translating his book The Asian Renaissance into Italian.
'This work, published more than two decades ago, presents a broad vision of the revival of the Asian civilisation through the values of knowledge, culture, openness and justice, as a response to global imbalances and the dominance of Western narratives.
'I deeply appreciate the dedication of these Italian scholars in translating the book, which allows key ideas on democracy and values-driven development to be widely shared and understood across the international community,' the prime minister said.
Anwar also said that the initiative was more than just a translation effort — it served as a bridge for thought and understanding between East and West in a divided global landscape.
'May this work continue to inspire efforts to champion the universal values of humanity, knowledge and justice,' he added. — Bernama

‘We are also affected when there is invasion and disruption': Anwar confronts Rubio on Gaza, calls for urgent ceasefire

KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that the atrocities and 'massacres' in Gaza, Palestine must be stopped immediately. The Prime Minister said this message was conveyed during Rubio's courtesy call on him in Parliament today, besides other matters discussed during the 40-minute meeting. 'He (Rubio) seemed confident that there would be a ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid into Palestine, particularly Gaza. 'Regarding other issues of peace, I emphasised that we here are also affected when there is invasion and disruption,' he told reporters after the meeting. Rubio arrived in Malaysia on Thursday to attend high-level engagements in conjunction with the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting and related meetings hosted by Malaysia under its Asean 2025 Chairmanship. This is also Rubio's first visit to Asia as Secretary of State since being appointed to the position earlier this year. He is representing the United States at the Asean meetings being held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from July 8 to 11. Anwar said he and Rubio also discussed Asean matters. 'The United States still regards its relationship with Malaysia as important and wants to maintain, even strengthen, cooperation with Asean and member countries,' he said. — Bernama

Anwar meets Rubio, asks US to reconsider tariffs and act on Gaza crisis

by AUFA MARDHIAH MALAYSIA is urging the US to review its proposed tariff decision, highlighting the country's role as a key trading partner. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he raised both issues during a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who acknowledged there is still a month to finalise the tariff policy and assured to consider Malaysia's views. 'He knows Malaysia is one of the main trading nations with the US in this region and said he would take our views into account,' Anwar told reporters after the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday. Anwar also pressed for an end to the violence in Gaza, calling it a massacre that must be stopped. He said Rubio seemed confident a ceasefire could be reached soon to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza and Palestine. He added that instability in other regions, including foreign invasions, could still affect Malaysia and ASEAN as a whole. On broader ties, Anwar said the US remains committed to working closely with Malaysia and ASEAN. 'They understand our position of wanting good relations and trade with all nations. This is important because many believe we must choose sides — but we don't,' he said. He explained that Malaysia will continue to maintain good relations and trade with all countries — including China and other ASEAN members — to safeguard national interest. 'While the US is an important trading partner, we will also strengthen our ties with China, ASEAN countries, and others to safeguard the people's interests and bring benefits to the nation,' he added.

Anwar Invites Trump to Asean, East Asia Summits in KL in October

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended an official invitation to United States (US) President Donald Trump to attend the Asean–US Summit and the East Asia Summit, both scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur this October. In a Facebook post following his meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Anwar said the high-level engagement reflected a shared commitment to elevate Malaysia–US relations to the level of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. He said the meeting opened avenues for enhanced cooperation in several key sectors, including digital investment, artificial intelligence, defence and education. 'We also exchanged views on pressing regional issues, including the situations in Palestine, Ukraine and Myanmar,' he said. Anwar also raised Malaysia's concerns over Washington's planned 25% import tariff on Malaysian goods, announced by Trump earlier this week. 'Malaysia views such unilateral actions as disruptive to the flow of free trade and potentially harmful to regional economic growth, especially for trading nations like Malaysia,' he said. 'Negotiations must remain open to ensure trade outcomes that are fair, balanced, and do not disadvantage developing countries.' Despite trade tensions, Anwar expressed confidence that close cooperation with the US would not only strengthen bilateral ties, but also serve as a catalyst for stability, prosperity and peace across the Indo-Pacific region. Rubio's visit marks his first to Asia as Secretary of State. The 25% tariff on Malaysian imports is scheduled to take effect on Aug 1, following a 90-day negotiation window that began in April.
