Wellington AFC awards night recognises players and volunteers
The event on Saturday, May 10 saw more than 100 players, officials, and supporters attend.
Chairman Mike Hall expressed his gratitude to everyone involved for their contributions over the past year.
The three managers, Richard Cherry of the first team; Mark Owen of the reserves; and Matt Groves, who manages the A team jointly with Warren Troth, then reviewed the season before presenting the awards.
The club award for Young Player of the Year went to Dylan Groves.
In the first team, Jake Quick was the leading scorer, Glen Wright was chosen as players' player and supporters' player, and Mark Cornish was the manager's player.
The reserves saw Jack Bryant as the top scorer and supporters' player, Alfie Barratt as players' player, and Sam Bryant as the manager's player.
In the A team, Jordan Sellick was the top scorer, Mitch Hansen was the players' player, and Aiden Trott was the manager's player.
Several club helpers were also recognised, including Lauren Watts, who is stepping down after three years as a sports therapist.
The club's Wellington Ladies and Wildcats Ladies will hold their awards nights on Saturday, May 24 and Saturday, June 14, respectively.
Presentations to the various boys' and girls' teams are planned throughout May and June.

David Healy says he will reiterate the same message to rising star Matthew Orr as he did to Trai Hume as interest in the teenager intensifies. Orr had a standout debut season for the Blues winning a number of Young Player of the Year awards as he helped his club lift the Irish Premiership title. "I would hope there are clubs interested but I don't know them," said Healy. "You hear whispers of some clubs in England, I don't know at what level. Advertisement "We had a similar situation a number of years ago when a club came in for Trai Hume very late in the window and we said 'absolutely not' because we didn't want him to go and the fee was wrong and we couldn't replace him at that point. "If it does get to that stage further down the line (with Orr) and it gets closer to the end of the window and we don't have a replacement Matty stays. "I think he played 30 odd games last season. If he plays another 40 this season the level of club that may be looking at him now may change. "It's something we spoke to Trai about saying 'they are interested in you now but there may be a Championship club or Premier League club eventually if you keep performing to the levels' and that will be the same message to Matthew." Advertisement While Healy has been reinforcing that message to Orr, he says the 18-year-old has the potential to be "a really, really top player". "Matthew will need to improve on what he did last season and I thought he was excellent last season," said Healy. "He has so much potential still to be unlocked but again your second season is almost more important than your first because you come in and you are fresh and don't know anything about it. "It is tough to play out here sometimes especially if Matthew is playing right back or right side of central defence and a couple of balls go astray and then all of a sudden there's a wee bit more pressure coming from the supporters. "So it's about improving on what he did last season. He has potential to be a really, really top player. He's still only 18."

Wisconsin basketball recruit named Nelson Giants Club Young Player of the Year
Wisconsin basketball commit Hayden Jones was named the Nelson Giants Club Young Player of the Year for the 2025 season on Friday. In addition to the Young Player of the Year honor, Jones pocketed Rapid League MVP nods for the Nelson Giants, which recognizes his efforts during a 4-minute quarter game played before the Giants' main contest in the New Zealand National Basketball League. As a 17-year-old, Jones averaged 9.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 20.6 minutes per game for the Giants. He did so off 44.8% shooting from the floor and 35.9% from 3-point range in 17 total games played. Jones added to his 2025 output during a wildly productive stint with New Zealand at the 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup in Lausanne, Switzerland. While his country earned a fourth-place finish, Jones often appeared as the most talented player on the hardwood. In seven games, the future Badger averaged a game-best 14.6 points and 7.7 rebounds per contest. He also notched 3.0 assists and 1.1 blocks in just under 29 minutes per appearance. Jones committed to Wisconsin's program back on July 25, 2024, just a few weeks after suiting up for New Zealand at the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup in Istanbul, Turkey. During the circuit, the class of 2025 product averaged nearly 12 points per game as the fourth-youngest player to ever debut for the country's senior national team. The future Badger now has three seasons with the Nelson Giants under his belt, plus further international experience at the 2023 FIBA U16 Asian Championship in Qatar. In just a few months, he will join sophomore guard Jack Janicki, senior guard Braeden Carrington, senior forward Elijah Gray, freshman forward Aleksas Bieliauskas, freshman guard Zach Kinziger, sophomore center Riccardo Greppi, sophomore guard Jack Robison and freshman center Will Garlock on UW's bench unit. Jones' place in the rotation will not be determined until Wisconsin begins its 2025-26 campaign this fall, but his development will be noteworthy. His ability to impact a game at such a young age is evident, and he will look to earn minutes when the Badgers begin the season with an exhibition against Oklahoma in October. Storied HBCU To Join New Athletic Conference
NEW ORLEANS-Xavier University of Louisiana, a prominent NAIA-level HBCU with a century-long history of academic and athletic excellence, announced Monday that it will become a full member of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) effective July 1, 2026. The decision follows a unanimous vote by the SSAC Board of Presidents earlier this month, signaling a significant realignment within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) landscape. The move marks Xavier's fourth full-time conference affiliation since the inception of its athletic programs. The university previously competed in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) from 1935 to 1960, the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) from 1981 to 2021, and most recently, the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC), where it has been a member since 2021. "We are thrilled to welcome Xavier University of Louisiana as a full member of the SSAC," said Mike Hall, conference commissioner. "Their history of academic and athletic achievement strengthens our conference at every level." Hall pointed to Xavier's recent top-25 finish in the Learfield Directors' Cup standings as a testament to the HBCU's broad-based athletic success in NAIA. The Directors' Cup ranks collegiate athletic programs based on their performance across multiple sports. Xavier will not wait until 2026 to compete in the SSAC ecosystem. Three of its programs, competitive cheer, men's indoor track and field, and women's indoor track and field, will participate as affiliate members during the 2025-26 season. The SSAC, founded in 1999, comprises institutions across Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Its current members include Loyola University (New Orleans), William Carey University (Hattiesburg, Miss.), University of Mobile (Mobile, Ala.), and nine others across the Southeast. For Xavier, the move carries both strategic and historical significance. The New Orleans-based HBCU will renew conference rivalries with Loyola, Mobile, and William Carey. Three schools it frequently faced during its tenure in the GCAC, including as recently as the 2009-10 academic year. "We are excited to join the Southern States Athletic Conference," said Xavier Athletic Director Pat Kendrick. "We look forward to the high level of competition and the opportunity to reignite longstanding rivalries." Xavier President Reynold Verret echoed those sentiments, adding, "Joining the Southern States Athletic Conference affirms our commitment to excellence and expands opportunities for our scholar-athletes to thrive both in the classroom and in competition." The transition also signals the end of Xavier's five-year tenure in the RRAC. Before formally exiting, the university plans to compete for at least 12 RRAC championships during the 2025-26 season.
