Pirates of the Caribbean fans are realising 'dark' secret about Jack Sparrow
If you've ever watched Disney's five part movie franchise Pirates of the Caribbean, you'll be familiar with Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp.
The first movie, called Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, follows pirate Jack Sparrow and the blacksmith Will Turner, played by Orlando Bloom, as they attempt to rescue the kidnapped Elizabeth Swann, portrayed by Keira Knightley. After premiering in 2003, the film was a massive box-office success where it grossed $654.3 million (£480.5 million) worldwide.
Since then, four more movies were released in the franchise, with stars now teasing that a sixth movie might be in the works.
Despite it having been over 22 years since the first movie was released, fans are just learning the reason why Jack became a pirate and the Captain of the Black Pearl ship.
In a deleted scene from the third movie, called Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Jack is seen speaking to Lord Cutler Beckett, who is the chairman of the East India Trading Company and is on a mission to eliminate piracy. During the scene, it becomes apparent that Jack had once worked for Lord Beckett, as he expresses his disappointment in Jack.
"We had a deal, Jack," Lord Beckett said to the pirate. "I contracted you to deliver cargo on my behalf. You chose to liberate it." To this, Jack coldly replied: "People aren't cargo, mate."
"Your good deed cost me, Jack," Lord Beckett replied, to which Jack said: "And you have spared me any possibility of ending up as anything other than what I am."
This deleted scene was discussed on the Sunday Cooltee podcast, where the hosts went on to explain how this had to do with the reason the Black Pearl became cursed.
"The whole reason that Jack Sparrow's ship was black," one of the hosts, named Andy, started. He went on to mention the deleted scene in question, where it becomes apparent that Jack had freed the slaves he was ordered to 'deliver' to Lord Beckett.
"Apparently, Jack Sparrow worked for the East India Trading Company forever ago, and the Black Pearl was given to him under contract from Beckett to be running goods from these places," he said, before explaining how one of cargos he'd been assigned were slaves.
Jack went on to free all the slaves, using the Black Pearl which wasn't black at the time. Beckett then catches up with Jack and lights the Black Pearl on fire, making it burn down and sink.
"And so he literally lost his ship, turned to pirating because he freed slaves," the podcast host explained. This later lead to Jack having to make a deal with Davey Jones to bring his ship back.
"And that's why also people are terrified when they see the Black Pearl. Because it shouldn't exist," another co-host named Joshua said.
People were amazed to learn this unknown detail of the backstory, and many fans were quick to wonder why the scene wasn't in the original version.
"This story would make great prequel," one person commented, while a second person said: "He became a pirate through a good deed."
"I still can't believe we were robbed of this," a third person added. Another person also shared: "Also why Jones makes Sparrows life worth 100 souls as that's roughly how many slaves he freed."

Each celebrity is paired with a culinary expert who guides them through each round, but those with the lowest scores face a cook-off without any help from their mentors, who can only watch from the sidelines. In a cruel twist, the mentors of those in the bottom two will have to endure a blind taste test to decide who progresses to the next round, potentially sending their own protege packing. Jack, a familiar face on television, is set to appear on the show this Sunday, 3rd August, at 8pm on ITV1, reports the Express. Throughout Ozzy's life, unbeknownst to many, the rockstar fathered six children, meaning Jack has five siblings - not just Kelly, who is widely known as his sister from MTV's At Home with the Osbournes. Before Sharon and Ozzy said 'I do', the Black Sabbath icon had been previously married. He met his first wife Thelma Riley in a Birmingham nightclub before they tied the knot and welcomed two biological children, Jessica, 53, and Louis, 50. Thelma was already a mother to five-year-old Elliot from a previous relationship when she met the lead singer. Ozzy would later adopt Elliot and raise him as his own. However, the three children don't have fond childhood memories with their daredevil dad. In a 2011 documentary (produced by Jack Osbourne), when Ozzy is asked about Louis and Jessica's birthdays, he fails to remember when each of them were born. In the same series, Louis revealed details about growing up with Ozzy: "When he was around and he wasn't [drunk], he was a great father. But that was kind of rare, really. I just have a lot of memories of him being drunk, random s**t like driving cars across fields and crashing them in the middle of the night and stuff like that. "It's not good for family life, really," he admitted in the documentary. His elder sister, Jessica also remarked: "I don't remember being put to bed or having a bath by dad or anything like that. I wouldn't say he was there for us, no, never on sports day, school trip, parents' evening. He wasn't like that, no." In 1982, Ozzy and Thelma divorced and that same year he wed Sharon, his manager at the time. Twelve months later, they welcomed their first daughter Aimee on September 2nd 1983, with their second daughter Kelly born on October 27, 1984. They eventually welcomed their youngest child, Jack on November 8, 1985. Whilst many fans know two of Sharon and Ozzy's offspring - Jack and Kelly - Aimee chose to stay out of the spotlight when the former X Factor judge decided to allow MTV's cameras into their home. Refusing to participate in filming, she left the family residence in the early 2000s to pursue her own musical career, performing under her initials ARO. In a previous interview with the Independent, she looked back on her choice to step away. She confided in the magazine: "Back then, I still felt I was trying to figure out who I was in the chaos of family life, so why on earth would I want that portrayed on television? I wanted to protect myself, my parents, my siblings, too. They were very young, very impressionable." In a 2008 interview with the same publication, Aimee defended her decision: "I'm not some weirdo depressed daughter that's afraid of the world and locks herself in her room all day. I just didn't choose to do the show. I want to be a singer, and I felt if I'd stayed with the Osbournes and done the whole thing I would have been typecast right away. "[Sharon] was hurt, and we definitely had a tough time with disagreements. I'm more reserved and my private life is very important." In 2021, it emerged that Sharon's two daughters were actually estranged from one another. Discussing her relationship with Aimee on the Dax Shepard podcast, Kelly admitted: "We don't talk. A five-star Google review agreed, writing: 'Magical and emotionally powerful film that deserves to become a family classic. 'Avoiding spoilers here is hard, but there is one drop of ink in the film that took my breath away and had my throat in knots. It's beautiful, powerful, emotional, yet comfortingly familiar.
