ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A newly launched women's party in Iraq is seeking to contest the next parliamentary elections through a campaign focused on women empowerment, its leader said Tuesday, with the party having already garnered over 7,000 members.
The al-Mawadda Women's Party is aiming to become a distinctive and influential voice for women in Iraq's male-dominated and conservative political arena, Jihan al-Taei, its secretary-general and founder, told Rudaw.
'Women constitute more than half of Iraqi society. Our party was established due to the marginalized role of women and their genuine exclusion from all areas of life, especially from decision-making,' she said.
According to Taei, plans for the party's establishment began two years ago and its opening procedures were carried out through instructions of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC).
But men are also included in its ranks, as Iraqi law mandates that one-third of any party's membership must be male. Al-Mawadda aims to shift this balance by empowering women and placing them in decision-making roles, Taei explained.
She said the large number of new members came 'without promotional campaigns, but rather as a result of people's belief in the necessity of having a women's party that expresses women's aspirations.'
The party's membership includes people from across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. Its headquarters is in Baghdad, with plans to open offices in other provinces as its base grows.
Al-Taei said the party faced delays of more than two years in securing official licensing - including seven months at the Accountability and Justice Commission - which prevented it from participating in previous elections.
It now plans to contest upcoming elections and is working to organize awareness workshops and launch an online portal for media membership.
She added that the party has received support from several parties, including the Communist Party, as well as from civil society organizations that took part in the founding conference. However, it has yet to establish formal cooperation with traditional parties.
Iraq will hold parliamentary elections on November 11.

Meeting in Baghdad, the two leaders discussed a range of pressing national issues, including preparations for the legislative elections scheduled for November 11, and ongoing financial disputes between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). A statement from the Sudani's office emphasized that both sides 'stressed the importance of not using state resources and human or material capabilities for electoral purposes, and preventing the exploitation of government positions to influence voter will.' The statement further noted that such measures would help bolster public trust in the democratic process and ensure the elections reflect the true will and aspirations of the Iraqi people. 'This will contribute to preserving Iraq's democratic path and promoting effective participation in the electoral process,' it added. In addition to election preparations, Rashid and Sudani discussed recent developments in the financial relationship between Baghdad and Erbil. Tensions escalated between Erbil and Baghdad in late May when the federal finance ministry halted budget transfers to the KRG, accusing the latter of exceeding its 12.67 percent budget share and failing to meet oil export obligations. The halt left over 1.2 million KRG public sector workers unpaid for more than two months. However, the standoff has eased following renewed dialogue between the KRG and federal government. On Thursday, the KRG's finance ministry announced it had received nearly 975 billion dinars (around $737 million) from Baghdad to cover May salaries, signaling progress in resolving the dispute. The move came as part of a recent agreement between the federal government and the KRG which stipulates that Baghdad should resume paying the salaries of KRG civil servants. In return, Erbil is expected to hand over oil produced in the Region, as well as non-oil revenues. However, key aspects of the deal remain unresolved, particularly regarding the volume of oil the KRG is required to deliver. Kurdish officials have cited a sharp decline in oil production - attributed in part to recent drone attacks on oil infrastructure in the Region - as a major obstacle to meeting the agreed quotas.

"One of the staff members at the House of the Wounded in the town of Abu Khashab, located in the Deir Ezzor countryside, was martyred last evening after being shot by unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle in front of his home. The attack also left his wife seriously injured; she was transferred to the hospital for urgent medical care," read a statement from the SDF. The US-backed force added that one of its fighters was injured in a separate incident in the province while returning to his home. "He was shot three times and sustained moderate injuries. He was taken to the hospital, where medical sources confirmed his condition is stable," the SDF added. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. The Islamic State (ISIS), which rose to power and seized swathes of Iraqi and Syrian land in a brazen offensive in 2014 but was territorially defeated in both countries by 2019, is active in Deir ez-Zor and often carries out attacks against the SDF. The group has exploited the security vacuum in the country since Bashar al-Assad's regime was collapse in December. Kurdish authorities in northeast Syria (Rojava) have repeatedly warned of the growing threat posed by ISIS. In January, SDF commander Mazloum Abdi said there is a 'need to intensify efforts to continue the fight against ISIS if we don't want to see it make a comeback.' The SDF said on Friday that ISIS had carried out three attacks on its forces in Dier ez-Zor province, killing a member and injuring another.

Turkey seeks full usage of oil pipeline with Iraq
Baghdad ( – Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar revealed on Monday that a suggested new energy deal between Turkey and Iraq must incorporate an approach to secure full usage of the two countries' oil pipelines. An official in the Iraqi Oil Ministry revealed last week that Ankara has submitted a proposal to Baghdad to renew and broaden the energy agreement between the two countries to encompass cooperation in oil, gas, petrochemicals, and electricity. The official's statements took place following Ankara's announcement that the long-running oil pipeline arrangement with Iraq, reached in 1973, will be terminated in 2026. The initial agreement between the two countries, established in July 1973, will expire on July 27, 2026, together with any relevant protocols, annexes, and extensions. The 1973 agreement paved the way for the Iraq-Turkey crude oil pipeline. This critical infrastructure project enabled the transit of millions of barrels of Iraqi oil to the Turkish port of Ceyhan on the Mediterranean. Bayraktar told reporters following a cabinet meeting that the pipeline has a capacity of over 1.5 million barrels per day, explaining that it has never reached this capacity when oil flows were ongoing, according to Reuters. The Turkish minister stated that Turkey's proposal contained alternatives such as stretching the pipeline to southern Iraq. To reach the pipeline's full capacity, it needs to be extended to the southern part of Iraq, according to Bayraktar. After the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris determined that Ankara had broken a 1973 convention by allowing oil exports without the permission of Baghdad, oil flows via the Iraq-Turkey oil pipeline were halted. Efforts to restore oil exports have accelerated in 2025, with the Iraqi government approving a new oil agreement between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in July.
