Time of India14-06-2025
Madhubani: Fast-tracking development works and resolving public grievances were key outcomes of a district-level coordination and monitoring (DISHA) committee meeting held at the DRDA auditorium in Madhubani on Saturday.
Chaired by MP Ramprit Mandal, the meeting brought together legislators, officials and public representatives to address key issues affecting the district.
MP Mandal stressed the importance of collective effort. "The cooperation of all stakeholders is crucial for resolving district-level issues and accelerating development works," he said while urging attendees to work jointly for rapid progress.
District magistrate Anand Sharma assured prompt action on concerns raised during the meeting.
He announced that departmental teams would be formed to investigate complaints related to road conditions, black marketing of fertilisers and problems in water supply and health services.
In the review of departmental performance, it was revealed that under the PMAY-Urban scheme, 4,139 houses were sanctioned between 2015-16 and 2018-19. Of these, 3,535 beneficiaries received the first instalment with disbursement continuing for subsequent phases.
Also, 76 panchayat govt buildings have been constructed and land has been identified for more. Waste processing units have been completed in 319 out of 386 panchayats while plastic waste management facilities are operational or being set up in various blocks. Out of 1,09,996 identified beneficiaries, 85,265 have received incentive payments.
The committee also discussed welfare and infrastructure schemes, including road repairs under PMGSY, agriculture and horticulture projects, drinking water supply through the Nal-Jal Yojana, MGNREGA, health services, food security and child development programmes.
Officials assured that damaged roads would be made motorable before the monsoon. "All concerns have been noted, and necessary actions will be taken without delay," the DM said.

Construction of 250 houses out of 254 under PMAY ready in Goa: Official

The Goa government has completed the construction of 250 houses out of the target of 254 for eligible beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), an official said on Thursday. The project, aimed at providing affordable housing, has been implemented at a total cost of ₹3.4 crore, the official said. Under the project, there was a target of constructing 254 houses for eligible beneficiaries in the state, said P K Shirodkar, nodal officer in-charge of the scheme and director of the District Rural Development Agency. "We have constructed 250 houses till date by meticulously following all the procedures under this scheme. The remaining four houses will be completed within the next two to three months," Shirodkar said. The Goa government led by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has spent ₹3.4 crore for the project till date, he said. The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is a flagship scheme of the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the government is providing affordable houses to all eligible rural households, he said. The scheme is shared between the Centre and the state in the ratio of 60:40, with 60 per cent funding by the Government of India and 40 per cent by the local government. The official said the disbursement under this scheme should be increased from ₹1.2 lakh to a higher amount as the construction cost of houses in Goa is higher compared to other states. "For example, to build a house of 50 sq metres, a minimum of ₹10 lakh to ₹15 lakh is required as a basic necessity," he said. As the target is about to be completed, the state government has conducted a survey of eligible beneficiary who would be covered in the current financial year, Shirodkar said. Mathura Vithal Desai, who lives in the remote Advalpal village in Bicholim taluka of North Goa district, lauded the government scheme and recalled how her house needed desperate repairs and they were short of funds. Her six-member family used to stay in a mud house earlier. "The situation was worse during rains. We even had snakes entering our house," she said. "After we applied for the PMAY, we got the money. We invested some more money from our savings and got the house constructed," Desai said. Similar is the case with Rohini Rohidas Kuttikar from Odlebhat - St Cruz near Panaji. She said it was due to the government support under the PMAY scheme that they could build their house.

Minister lays foundation for bridge over Chitravathi river

Gorantla: BC Welfare Minister S Savitha laid foundation stone for a high-level bridge over Chitravathi river at Budili village in Gorantla mandal on Wednesday. The bridge, with estimated cost of Rs 8.52 crore, is being constructed with assistance from PMGSY funds in collaboration with Central and State governments. The project is expected to be completed and operational by 2027. Speaking at the event, Minister Savitha claimed of fulfilling her promise given to Budili villagers, who requested for a bridge, and credited Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for promptly approving funds after she raised the issue. She also announced infrastructure developments in the region, including construction of CC roads and canals worth Rs 6 crore under National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. In Budili alone, Rs 20 lakh has already been spent, and an additional Rs 20 lakh proposal has been submitted. She revealed that Rs 26 lakh from CM Relief Fund was allocated to 26 beneficiaries in the village for medical aid this year. Under the housing scheme, Minister Savitha said funds will be released to 56 beneficiaries with house sites in the first phase. In the second phase, eligible poor families will receive house sites and construction assistance.

Pipeline work undermines Vaigai Road beautification project

Madurai: A three-kilometre pedestrian stretch along the Vaigai South Bank Road, from Kuruvikaran Salai to Viraganur, developed under the Smart City Mission, has been dug up for pipeline work under the AMRUT Mullaperiyar drinking water scheme, defeating the original purpose of the beautification project. The Rs 84-crore riverfront initiative aimed to create a scenic, walkable public space. However, with pipelines being laid on the pavement instead of the road, residents and councillors say the project's core objective has been compromised. Madurai MP Su Venkatesan criticised the decision, saying, "This road adds to the city's charm as it offers pedestrians a riverside walking space. In other major roads, pipelines were laid on the carriageway. Why make an exception here just because VIPs use it?" Corporation officials defended the move, citing the road's importance for southbound traffic and dignitary movement. "We chose the pavement to avoid traffic disruptions," an official said. But the MP said the matter would be raised again with civic authorities. Residents voiced similar concerns. "This was one of the last remaining walkable stretches in the city," said M Pandiyan of Kamarajar Salai. "Now it's narrower and poorly lit, especially unsafe after dark." Traffic activist T Nageshwaran questioned the logic of the alignment. "The opposite side of the road has more space and is away from the riverbank. That would've been a better choice." A senior corporation official admitted that rerouting the pipeline would now be difficult and costly. "Half the stretch is done. In some sections, we have laid it on the road, not the pavement. But in light of the concerns, alternatives are being explored," the official said. Worker shortage delays AMRUT pipeline work, say minister, MLA Madurai: The slow pace of the AMRUT drinking water pipeline project in Madurai has drawn criticism from Minister P Moorthy and Madurai South MLA M Boominathan, who raised the issue during the DISHA meeting on Wednesday. They blamed the delay on a shortage of workers deployed by the contractor handling Package 5 of the project. "The contractor is underperforming. The corporation must act," said Moorthy, citing complaints from Madurai South and West. Corporation commissioner Chitra Vijayan said the contractor had already been penalised. "We recently held a meeting with them to speed up the work," she said. Virudhunagar MP Manickam Tagore highlighted coordination lapses, noting that roads in areas like Thirunagar were relaid before underground work was completed. "They'll be dug up again within a year. This points to serious mismanagement," he said. On overhead tank (OHT) construction, Vijayan said that only four of the planned 38 tanks had undergone water-holding tests, but most are expected to be ready by month-end. MLA Boominathan added that progress stalled after the Chithirai festival and has not recovered. "Residents complain daily about either unrepaired roads or pipeline work dragging on," he said.
