KievcTypeface:> At least 11 people were killed in Russian missile and drone strikes targeting Kiev overnight, Ukrainian authorities said on Thursday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the latest wave of attacks that he said also left dozens injured. A six-year-old boy was among those killed in the capital, Zelensky wrote on X, extending his condolences to the families. The president also reported of 'extensive damage to residential infrastructure,' saying 'an entire section of an apartment block has been destroyed. He posted a video showing a massively damaged multi-storey building. Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported nine minors had been injured in the attacks - the highest number of underage casualties seen in Kiev in one night since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. Zelensky said while Kiev was 'the primary target of the massive attack,' the Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Sumy and Mykolaiv were also hit, with Russia launching more than 300 drones and eight missiles overnight. Scandinavian NATO members to provide $500 mn for Ukraine

DPA Malmö The Scandinavian NATO countries Sweden, Denmark and Norway are providing a total of more than $500 million for an initiative to speed up arms deliveries from the United States to Ukraine. Sweden is contributing $275 million to the Prioritized Ukraine Requirement List (PURL) initiative coordinated by NATO, with Denmark pledging 580 million Danish kroner ($90 million) and Norway 1.5 billion Norwegian kroner ($146 million), the governments of the three countries announced on Tuesday. As part of the initiative, the participating countries will purchase defence equipment from the United States and then make it available to Ukraine so that it can defend itself against the ongoing Russian invasion. The Scandinavian package includes missiles for Patriot air defence systems, Sweden's Defence Minister Pål Jonson told a press conference in Stockholm. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte thanked the three countries for their contribution. The funding ensures the delivery of life-saving equipment and essential goods to the front line, strengthening Ukraine's position and helping it to fend off aggression while striving for lasting peace, Rutte said in a post on X. The Scandinavian countries have been among the largest donors to Ukraine since the outbreak of the Russian war in Ukraine almost three and a half years ago. The Netherlands had already announced a similar package worth around $500 million as part of PURL on Monday.

Remote-controlled Russian drone attack kills two in Zaporizhzhya

DPA Kiev Two men were killed by a remote-controlled Russian drone in the south-eastern region of Zaporizhzhya, the region's Governor Ivan Federov wrote on Telegram on Tuesday. He said the men were standing next to a house in the municipality of Stepnohirsk, which is not far from the front line between Russian and Ukrainian troops. Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia's full-scale invasion since February 2022. The two countries intensified their mutual attacks on strategically important railway lines overnight. A Russian airstrike on the Ukrainian railway hub of Lozova damaged the station and other infrastructure buildings, according to the Ukrainian civil defence authorities. One railway employee was killed, and 10 others were injured, including two teenagers, the Kharkiv regional prosecutor's office reported. Railway lines through Lozova connect to Kharkiv and the eastern Ukrainian front-line cities of Kramatorsk and Kostiantynivka. The city was attacked by more than 30 Russian combat drones, according to reports. Mayor Serhii Zelensky described it as the most severe attack in more than three years of war. Both warring parties aim to disrupt the enemy's supply lines to the front by damaging railway infrastructure.

Trump tariff threats loom over China's Russian oil purchases, following his move on India

Agencies Even in the face of threats by US President Donald Trump to levy tariffs on countries that import Russian goods, analysts expect that China 'will not stop' buying oil from its northern neighbour, given their mutually beneficial relationship of energy cooperation. Oil from Russia will continue to flow south over the long run because 'China's strategic goals require a stable and secure supply of critical resources such as oil', said Matt Gertken, chief geopolitical strategist at BCA Research in Canada. His comments came with Trump sharpening his threat of sanctions on Russia if it fails to engage in a ceasefire in Ukraine, where Moscow has waged war for the last three and a half years. Previously, both the United States and the European Union announced blanket sanctions on Russia, and they also tried to cut off its lifelines by threatening secondary sanctions on those helping it. 'The US said at the time that it would implement those [tariff] threats by August 7-9 if trade with Russia was not curtailed by then, and affirmed that China would be a target,' Gertken added. 'The US has already taken action on India, so China is next in line.' Russia is China's top source of crude imports, supplying a record high 108.5 million tonnes, or 19.6 per cent of its total imports, last year. Guo Jiakun, spokesman for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a press conference last week that 'China will take energy supply measures … based on national interests', while 'tariff wars have no winners'. New Delhi said in a statement on Monday that Washington's 'targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable', and vowed to safeguard its economic security, after Trump said in a social media post that he would substantially raise tariffs on India over its purchases of Russian oil. Li Lifan, who specialises in Russian and Central Asian studies at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, said that the US could not disrupt the political and economic relationships between China and Russia.
