KUCHING (June 23): Racial diversity should be embraced as a strength to enhance national unity, rather than as a battleground for rivalry or a means to showcase superiority and ego, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
He said that in many other countries, such diversity has led to racial and religious hostility, eventually burdening the nation and negatively affecting the people.
'Unity within our multiracial society is increasingly essential to ensure that Malaysia remains strong amid the current uncertain global geopolitical landscape.
'Never underestimate the potential problems if you are disunited. The geopolitical conditions are so challenging and alarming. The future is never certain. But what we can ensure is a united Malaysia,' he said.
Anwar was speaking at the 2025 Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak celebration dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here last night, which was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi were the guests of honour at the event.
Anwar said as prime minister, he feels proud in showcasing the country's cultural and racial diversity, especially as Malaysia assumes the ASEAN chairmanship this year and when receiving foreign dignitaries and corporate leaders.
He said this was exemplified during a recent meeting with ConocoPhillips Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ryan Lance, where he wore a traditional Iban outfit gifted to him earlier by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
'So I told him (Ryan) about Sarawak, about the beauty of the culture, that's what we have to do. And I take great pride as a Malaysian to speak to one of the great multi-billion dollar companies, probably one of the biggest oil companies in the world and number one in the United States,' he said.
Meanwhile, Anwar also announced that he will meet with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto this Friday to discuss a proposal for Sarawak to be positioned as a hub for the ASEAN Power Grid (APG).
He said Sarawak, with its strengths in hydroelectric, gas and hydrogen energy, has the potential to spearhead the APG, not only by linking to Sabah and Indonesia's Kalimantan, but also extending to the southern Philippines. – Bernama anwar ibrahim geopolitical lead multi-racial national unity

Ringgit Extends Gains As US Dollar Weakens Ahead Of Key Data

The ringgit continued its upward momentum during its opening on July 1, lifted by sustained weakness in the US dollar as investors positioned ahead of key economic data releases. At 8:01am, the local currency rose to 4.1955/2160 against the greenback, strengthening from the close of 4.2060/2130 on June 30. Against a basket of major currencies, the ringgit was mixed. It softened versus the Japanese yen to 2.9190/9335 and the British pound to 5.7617/7898. It also slipped against the euro to 4.9457/9698. However, the ringgit posted gains against most regional peers. It appreciated against the Thai baht at 12.9331/13.0059, the Indonesian rupiah at 258.3/259.7, and the Philippine peso at 7.44/7.49. It eased slightly versus the Singapore dollar at 3.3009/3176. Analysts expect the ringgit to remain sensitive to both U.S. macroeconomic signals and regional market flows in the lead-up to the July 9 trade deadline. Related

Of PMX leaving country amid judiciary quandary, accusing M'sians of politicising Tengku Maimun's service extension

'ISN'T the timing of PMX's trip abroad coinciding with the appointment of a new Chief Justice?' Such was the question posed on the Facebook page of a former New Straits Times (NST) journalist as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim slammed alleged attempts to lobby the government into extending Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat's tenure which ends today (July 1) by another six months. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) announced yesterday (June 30) that PMX will embark on a week-long tour from July 1 (today) to 7 which covers three major economic hubs, namely Italy, France and Brazil, to bolster economic, trade and strategic ties. The official visit will include high-level meetings with PMX's counterparts in Rome, Paris and Rio de Janeiro with the three markets collectively recording bilateral trade of RM50.91bil in 2024, according to senior press secretary to the Prime Minister Tunku Nashrul Abaidah. Whether the timing of PMX's latest overseas trip is a coincidence or otherwise was questioned by a commenter to the NST's ex-journo FB post who pointed out that the 'same thing happened when the new AG was roped in and Zahid got his freedom'. Recall that PMX was in Jakarta from Sept 5-7, 2023 to attend the 43rd ASEAN Summit which was the day after the Kuala Lumpur High Court accorded a discharged not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (Sept 4, 2023). The DNAA collectively 'cleared' the UMNO president from all 47 charges of criminal breach of trust (CBT), corruption and money laundering in relation to the Yayasan Akalbudi funds. Justice Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah made the ruling after allowing Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar's application to DNAA Ahmad Zahid after the prosecution decided to halt the case as they wanted to investigate the case more in depth. On Nov 11 last year when Dasuki was made the Attorney-General, PMX was not in town having earlier embarked on a four-day official visit to Cairo from Nov 9-12 at the invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. He also attended the Extraordinary Arab and Islamic Summit on the escalating violence by the Zionist regime on Palestinians and Lebanese before extending his globe-trotting feat to Peru (Nov 12-16) and later to Brazil (Nov 16-19) to attend the 2024 G20 Rio de Janeiro summit. Rafizi schools PMX Earlier, former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has rubbished PMX's politicisation claim given that concerns expressed by the legal fraternity and Malaysians at large over the extension of Tengku Maimun's tenure and that of Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim are justified. 'They're not political or seeking to politicise the appointment of judges (which has its own processes),' argued the former economy minister in a media statement which has earned wide applauses after Malaysians at large blasted PMX for turning defensive on the matter. 'It's a reasonable thing to do considering the current situation where the vacancy of more than half of the Federal Court judges will slow down the progress of court cases.' The Pandan MP who can now voice his opinion with no restriction having left the government further stressed that PMX cannot dismiss the concerns of legal practitioners simply by assuming that this issue is a political attack. 'This polemic began with legal practitioners' concerns that the next leadership of the judiciary will change to someone who is directly appointed to the Federal Court,' he justified. 'With more than half of the senior judges in the Federal Court vacant, the question arises whether the direct appointment (of a judge to the Federal Court) is part of a plan to bypass the seniority list of existing judges and change the leadership of the judiciary for the next eight years given that he (the appointed judge) will only reach mandatory retirement in 2033?' As it is, the on-going judiciary controversy has worsened the state of trust deficit on the Madani government with 'double standards' having emerged in other key appointments. 'When the service of MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki was extended three times in a row and Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan was not appointed as the new IGP, of course the rumour mill will kick into full; gear,' added Rafizi. – July 1, 2025 Main image credit: Badan Kehakiman Malaysia | The Malaysian Judiciary/Facebook; Anwar Ibrahim/Facebook

Sarawak rights activist urges Nurul Izzah to back NCR land remarks with action

KUCHING, July 1 — Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar should follow up on her comments on Sarawak's Native Customary Rights (NRC) lands by engaging with affected communities and other stakeholders, said Peter John Jaban. While thanking Nurul Izzah for her concern, the rights activist however said such issues have existed for decades, yet has drawn little attention from the federal government. 'If these are the same concerns Nurul Izzah is raising in 2025, the question that must be asked is, why only now? 'For years, NCR landowners have fought alone in the courts, on logging roads, in far-flung longhouses, without legal access or media coverage. Where was the federal attention then?' he told The Borneo Post when contacted yesterday. He was asked to comment on Nurul Izzah's recent statement calling for faster action on surveys and ownership approvals of NCR land in the state, and for a halt to the issuance of new licences on disputed land. Peter said despite Nurul Izzah having held public office and speaking out on various national issues, her engagement on indigenous land issues, particularly in Sarawak, has been minimal. 'Still, her concern is valid to NCR landowners, but concern without clarity is not good enough.' He said without meaningful engagement with Dayak-based organisations or other land rights defenders, her words risk appearing 'superficial, a headline rather than a helping hand'. Nurul Izzah, stressed Peter, ought to meet with NCR landowners and civil society organisations, while also pushing for the reform of state-federal frameworks to ensure that native land rights are respected and 'not just surveyed for administrative convenience'. 'For her advocacy to matter, it must now be backed by real engagement,' he said, adding that Nurul Izzah's influence at the federal level could amplify the realities that local communities have long been trying to highlight. He went on to say that since the perimeter survey programme under Section 6 of the Sarawak Land Code began in 2010, civil society groups, lawyers, and native leaders have raised serious questions about its transparency, implementation, and implications. This has included concerns over the eventual conversion of NCR land into leasehold titles — a process Peter claimed that, in many cases, strips the land of its customary protections. — The Borneo Post
