Aspergillus: The Fungi That Can Eat Humans 'Inside Out', Spark A Pandemic
Aspergillus species are "widespread environmental saprotrophs" that can cause severe infections in humans, livestock, and plants, the research conducted by a team of scientists from Manchester University said. It was published earlier this month and is currently being peer-reviewed, CNN reported.
Aspergillus is a common group of fungi found across the world. It causes aspergillosis, a life-threatening disease, which primarily affects the lungs in humans.
To map the potential spread of Aspergillus in the future, the researchers used various simulations and forecasts.
As part of the study, the scientists found there were specific Aspergillus species that will expand in the future as the climate crisis intensifies. This means these will next reach new regions in North America, Europe, China and Russia.
Norman van Rijn, one of the authors of the study, suggests that Fungi are "under-researched" when compared to viruses and parasites. These are expected to impact major areas of the world in the coming time, he said.
Citing the famous HBO series, The Last Of Us, where most of the world's population turned into violent monsters due to an infectious mutant fungus, Mr Rijn hopes it will raise the profile of fungal infections in real life.
Mr Rijn serves as a climate change and infectious diseases researcher at the University of Manchester.
On average, an estimated 2.5 million people are killed every year by fungal infections. The lack of data means the number could get higher.
Like several other fungi, Aspergillus grow like small filaments in soils. They go on to release a large amount of tiny spores that further spread via air.
These get inhaled by humans on a daily basis. Most people are not expected to experience any health concerns, for their immune system is capable enough to clear them.
But it's not the same for those dealing with asthma, cystic fibrosis or COPD. Also in danger are those having compromised immune systems, including cancer and organ transplant patients.
Mr Rijn says when our immune system is unable to clear these spores, the fungus "starts to grow".
The researcher adds it "basically kind of eat you from the inside out, saying it really bluntly".
He highlights that Aspergillosis holds a high mortality rate of about 20% to 40%. What's even worse is that it continues to remain difficult to diagnose, since patients show symptoms like fever and cough - similar to other illnesses.
Aspergillus flavus, which prefers hot and tropical climates, might widen its reach by 16% if we continue to burn fossil fuels, the study added.
The species can cause severe infections and remains resistant to several antifungal medications.
This can even infect a wide range of food crops, thus being a major threat to food security.

Anonymous buyer spends ₹263 crore to own 150-million-year-old dinosaur fossil; ‘Bezos or Musk?' wonders social media
A very rare dinosaur fossil has been sold for $30.5 million ( ₹ 263 crore) at an auction in New York. It was a Ceratosaurus, a meat-eating dinosaur with a horn on its nose, sharp teeth and bony armour on its back and tail. The buyer wants to loan it to an institution, which is suitable for a specimen of this 'rarity and importance', Sotheby's auction house said. Professor Steve Brusatte has called such high prices shocking. The dinosaur expert from the University of Edinburgh feels museums cannot afford them. 'While I'm pleased that the buyer might loan the skeleton to a museum to be put on display, at this point, it is just a vague suggestion. The buyer is still anonymous,' Brusatte told CNN. He fears the fossil may end up hidden in a rich person's home and never be seen by the public again. 'My fear is that this skeleton will disappear into the ether, into the mansion of an oligarch or a bank vault to accumulate value as just another investment in the portfolio of a hedge fund, and not see the light of day until it's auctioned again, or maybe never at all,' he added. A Mars meteorite, the biggest found on Earth, was sold for $5.3 million in the same auction. In July 2024, a Stegosaurus fossil named Apex was sold by Sotheby's for $44.6 million ( ₹ 380 crore). Social media wondered who the buyer was. 'Bezos or Musk?' asked one YouTube user. Another called it 'bare bones capitalism'. 'Are you telling me Sotheby's got 4 million in fees?' asked one user as the official price differed from what was seen in the auction video. This fossil is special because it's the only young Ceratosaurus among the four known in the world. It is over 150 million years old. It belongs to Late Jurassic, Kimmeridgian Stage, estimated to have existed 154-149 million years ago. The fossil is 6 feet tall and over 10 feet long, with 139 bones. Its skull is almost complete with 57 bones. It is an 'exceptional, exhibition-ready mounted skeleton', according to Sotheby's. The skull has 43 teeth, along with 5 extra loose teeth. Its sharp teeth and horned nose are clearly visible. The bones are well-preserved, dark in colour and show fine details. Sotheby's says it is one of the best and most complete fossils of its kind. It was expected to sell for $4 to $6 million. However, it got much more after six bidders competed, CNN reported. It was shown at a museum in Utah from 2000 to 2024. Surprisingly, scientists have never formally studied this fossil in a research paper. Experts believe the fossil belonged to a young dinosaur due to the delicate bone structure. The skeleton has been carefully mounted in a dramatic pose with jaws open. It includes ownership documents, x-rays, 3D scans and legal certification. According to Sotheby's, the dinosaur skeleton is offered with full ownership rights.

Spirituality Is A Powerful Tool In India's Anti-Drug Drive: Union Minister Mandaviya
The minister told News18 that the government is planning to integrate spiritual organisations into its broader mission to build a drug-free India Union sports minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya on Saturday emphasised the role of spirituality in tackling the menace of drug addiction among youth, calling it a vital tool in shaping a 'Viksit Bharat" by 2047—a vision laid out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking exclusively to CNN-News18 on the sidelines of the Yuva Spiritual Summit in Varanasi, Mandaviya said, 'Spiritual leaders hold a deep connect with society, especially with the youth. Their influence can be instrumental in guiding young minds away from addiction." He added that the government is planning to integrate spiritual organisations into its broader mission to build a drug-free India. 'This is just the beginning of a nationwide campaign. We aim to turn it into a robust people's movement with spiritual leaders leading from the front," the minister said, highlighting the significance of the spiritual capital, Varanasi, in anchoring the campaign. Mandaviya acknowledged the challenges the youth face today, particularly the growing lure of narcotics. 'The youth are central to the PM's vision of a developed India. But they are also grappling with very real threats, like substance abuse. It is our responsibility to help them overcome it," he said. Drug eradication has been a top policy priority for the Narendra Modi government, with the union home ministry launching sustained operations across the country to curb trafficking and distribution. Mandaviya also urged 15 lakh schools across India to join the mission through health-focused initiatives. Under his leadership, the Fit India Sundays on Cycle campaign—launched in December 2024—has turned into a mass movement, with over 50,000 citizens participating weekly across thousands of locations. The Yuva Spiritual Summit, held at the Rudraksh Convention Centre in Varanasi, centred on the theme Drug-Free Youth for a Developed India. The event saw participation from over 600 young individuals representing around 122 spiritual and socio-cultural organisations from across the country. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
