‘Death Stranding' Is Helping UK Users Bypass Age Verification Laws

Gizmodo6 days ago
Gamers in the United Kingdom have found a surprisingly simple way to bypass online age verification checks now required by law on some websites using just a video game.
An X user named Dany Sterkhov appears to be the first to discover the hack. On July 25, he posted that he had bypassed Discord's age verification check using the photo mode in the video game Death Stranding.
Sterkhov made the post just days after the U.K. began enforcing the Online Safety Act—a set of laws passed in 2023 aimed at preventing children from accessing porn or other 'harmful' content related to self-harm, suicide, and eating disorders. Companies that fail to comply with the new laws could face fines of up to 18 million pounds ($24.2 million) or 10% of their global revenue, whichever amount is higher. According to the U.K.'s media regulator, Ofcom, platforms like Bluesky, Discord, Grindr, Reddit, and X have already committed to adding age verification systems to their platforms.
'Prioritizing clicks and engagement over children's online safety will no longer be tolerated in the U.K.,' said Ofcom executive chief Dame Melanie Dawes in a statement. 'Our message to tech firms is clear – comply with age-checks and other protection measures set out in our Codes, or face the consequences of enforcement action from Ofcom.'
But it turns out some of these age verification methods aren't all that hard to trick.
The Verge and PCGamer have both tried Sterkhov's hack themselves and confirmed it works.
Most of these companies rely on third-party platforms to handle age verification. These services typically give users the option to upload a government-issued photo ID or submit photos of themselves.
Discord uses a platform called k-ID for age verification. According to The Verge's Tom Warren, all he had to do to pass the check was point his phone's camera at his monitor to scan the face of Sam Bridges, the protagonist of Death Stranding, using the game's photo mode. The system did ask him to open and close his mouth—something that is easy enough to do in the game.
Warren was also able to bypass Reddit's age check, which is handled by Persona, using the same method. However, the trick didn't work with Bluesky's system, which uses Yoti for age verification.
Discord and Reddit did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Gizmodo.
Death Stranding gamers weren't the only ones trying to avoid the age verification systems.
ProtonVPN reported on X that it saw an over 1,400 percent increase in sign-ups in the U.K. after the age verification requirements took effect. VPNs let people browse the web as if they were in a different location, making it easier to bypass the U.K.'s age checks.
In the U.S., laws requiring similar age verification systems for porn sites have passed in nearly half the states. Nine states in the U.S. have also passed laws requiring parental consent or age verification for social media platforms.

Katya Jones intimidates guys

Katya Jones thinks men are intimidated by her. The Strictly Come Dancing professional is keen to find a new partner but thinks guys are too shy to even talk to her, let alone ask her out on a date. She told the Sunday Mirror newspaper: 'Us women have fought to be so independent and strong and do our own thing, that it might send confusing messaging to them, like, 'Can I approach or can I not?' So, I totally understand why they're being hesitant sometimes, but I'm open and ready to be approached... 'I might meet somebody today. You get up and you never know who you might meet. I've got to look nice… I'm always ready and open.' The 36-year-old beauty is hoping to find someone to settle down and have children with, but that wouldn't mean giving up her career. She said: 'I would like to have kids with someone who I believe could be a good father but I've got nieces I can spend my energy on right now, or some of my friends' children, like Janette[Manrara]. "Seeing how she does everything and is a mother as well is really inspiring. It just shows that you can do it all if you put your mind to it.' Katya has considered freezing her eggs to preserve her fertility, but is ultimately hopeful she can have a family "naturally". She said: 'I've spoken to women who have done it… I didn't hear about it until two years ago, which is quite surprising really. However, I still have faith in meeting someone naturally. That would be lovely.' The Russian dancer was previously married to fellow Strictly pro Neil Jones for six years until 2019, and while he has moved on and had daughter Havana with fiancee Chyna Mills, he and Katya are still close. She said: "We're absolutely still on good terms. We knew each other since we were 18 and started dancing. We lived a life together… it was me and him against the world, chasing our dreams. "We were the only people there for each other so of course there is a much more profound connection there. You can't just throw that away.'

Find out more about Inverclyde funk and soul band who have summer full of gigs

In celebration of Inverclyde's thriving music scene, the Telegraph goes backstage with a local band or artist every month. This month, we're profiling funk and soul band Sovirez to find out about their musical journey. Sovirez are vocalist Anthony Squires, Steven Jess on guitar, Neil McKenzie on bass guitar, Chris Squires on drums, and Graeme Gray on keyboard and trumpet. (Image: Sovirez) Brothers Chris and Anthony Squires first formed the band in 2018, and the five-piece line up was created the following year. They officially launched in 2020 and performed at local open mic nights. Vocalist Anthony said while local gigs helped the band get a foothold on the music scene, there's a festival they have their hearts set on. But they're staying true to their roots too. He added: 'The ultimate gig would have to be on the main stage at Glastonbury. 'It's iconic and special, and something I think that most bands would aspire to. 'Somewhere closer to home that would be incredible to perform at, other than the obvious choices of the Hydro and Hampden, would be Cappielow Park.' Sovirez have achieved a lot over the last few years but there are a few moments that stand out. Anthony said: 'It's hard to pick one thing as our biggest achievement because each one at the time has meant so much to us. 'From our first sold-out shows, and our song being named 'single of the week' on BBC Scotland, to headlining the second stage at ButeFest twice, we've had a lot of great moments.' The band, who describe themselves as 'funky, fun, and determined', played Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival last night (Friday). They're set for PrestFest in August, and then a double header in early September playing at the Largs Viking Festival and headlining Greenock's Gig on the Green. (Image: Sovirez) Anthony said getting through covid has been the biggest challenge for the band to date. He added: 'We had just performed in public for the first time and we were ready to start gigging, and then everything just stopped. 'We used that period to really focus on writing and continued to have band Zoom calls to discuss our ideas with each other.' When it comes to writing songs for the band, Anthony says it's very much a 'collective effort'. He said: 'Each member tends to write their own parts. As a group we are all open to suggestions and ideas from each other.' Members of the band are all influenced by a range of bands and artists. Anthony said he's listening to Alan Stone, Jalen Ngonda and MT Jones, and bassist Neil is a huge fan of American singer-songwriter and guitarist John Mayer. While there are many bands they would love to meet, there's one icon that stands out. Anthony added: 'As a funk and soul band, it would be very cool to cross paths with someone like Nile Rodgers. 'He's a legend of the business, has written hit after hit and comes across as genuinely nice person.'
