‘Stay the course': Aussies warned of the pitfalls of switching to cash during market falls
A simple mistake is costing the average Aussie thousands of dollars in retirement savings each year – and one super fund is sounding the alarm. Modelling released by Aware Super using their high growth or conservative balance option shows Australians could double their superannuation savings by simply staying in their investment strategy instead of moving during market downturns. The analysis shows Australians who stayed invested in High Growth super investment options during the GFC in 2008, rather than switching to cash, saw their super balance more than double by 2025. A retiree who stays in a more conservatively-balanced pension option, rather than switching to cash, would now have $8500 a year more in retirement income, Aware Super said. This is even with the ASX getting smashed on 'Black Monday' when the global financial crisis hit the local market – dragging it down 16.4 per cent in a single week and nearly 50 per cent over between late 2007 and early 2009. Aware Super chief investment officer Damian Graham said staying invested in the right superannuation option for your life stage was key, as was understanding that market ups and downs are just a normal part of the investment cycle. 'Australians understandably get nervous when sharemarkets wobble, but history shows that trying to 'time the market' by switching to cash can put a serious dent in your retirement savings,' Mr Graham said. 'The most important thing is to not let short-term market noise push you into decisions that could hurt your long-term retirement goals. 'We want every Australian to have the guidance and confidence they need to build and enjoy the retirement they've earned.' Mr Graham said the same holds true during the recent Covid-19 downturn with those in a high growth option who switched to cash now $58,000 worse off for every $100,000 they had in their superannuation. Australians who are in a conservative balanced strategy, who could have lost $113,000 by switching to cash during Covid. Mr Graham said despite the volatility in the current markets off the back of unrest in the Middle-East and US President Donald Trump's tariff policy, history suggests members could be better off if they look at the long-term strategy over short-term downturns. 'Key to Aware's performance was its long-term investment strategy and diversified portfolio, which spreads investments across a range of asset classes, markets and countries, exposing more market opportunities and helping to limit losses if there are falls in any one part of the portfolio,' he said.

Indonesia to sign $52.3b trade pact with US in effort to avoid higher tariffs
Indonesia will sign a trade and investment pact worth $52.3 billion ($US34 billion) with the United States in an effort to avoid tougher tariffs due next week. The deal, set to be signed on July 7, will mean Indonesia increases imports of US fuels and will see investment by Indonesian companies in energy and agriculture sectors in the US, according to the Indonesian Chief Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto. Flag carrier Garuda Indonesia also said it was in talks to buy up to 75 jets from Boeing. Indonesia is facing a 32 per cent tariff in US markets and has previously offered to increase US imports to facilitate trade talks between the two sides. US President Donald Trump announced sweeping global levies on goods brought into the US in April, throwing world stockmarkets into chaos, but the majority of the tariffs were paused for 90 days. Mr Trump announced a deal with Vietnam on Wednesday, under which the country would face a minimum 20 per cent tariff, down from the original 46 per cent. Mr Hartarto said on Thursday by addressing the trade balance with the United States, Indonesia hoped to get a better trade deal than the one struck with Vietnam. "This shows that government, regulators, state-owned enterprises and the private sector are together in responding to the imposition of US reciprocal tariffs," he said. Meanwhile, Garuda's potential jet purchase may include 737 Max 8 and 787 jets, its chief executive Wamildan Tsani said. It was unclear whether Garuda's discussion with Boeing was part of the tariff negotiations. The United States is one of Indonesia's top trading partners, and Jakarta enjoyed a $25.5 billion ($US16.8 billion) trade surplus with Washington in 2024, according to Indonesian government data. Data from the US trade representative office shows Washington's goods trade deficit with Jakarta was $27.2 billion ($US17.9 billion) in 2024, up 5.4 per cent increase on the year prior. The US-Vietnam deal came a week before the threatened US reimposition of steep tariffs on dozens of economies, including the European Union and Japan. Many countries are still scrambling to reach deals with Washington that would protect them from the measures. Those higher tariffs are part of a package Mr Trump initially imposed citing a lack of "reciprocity" in trading relationships, before announcing a temporary lowering to 10 per cent. Since then, Washington has announced a pact with Britain and a deal to temporarily lower retaliatory duties with China. — Reuters/AFP

High Voltage: Lithium prices – and stocks – jump after market moves in China
Lithium stocks surged in a manic ASX trading day on Thursday Price jump reported for spodumene and carbonate in China could be behind the optimism It's risky, but have investors correctly picked the bottom? Our High Voltage column wraps all the news driving ASX stocks with exposure to lithium, cobalt, graphite, nickel, rare earths, and vanadium. Lithium stocks rose 10% yesterday off the back of an increase in spot prices, driven by a run in the Chinese futures market. Finally something for the bag holders to cling to. Fastmarkets' 6% lithia spodumene price lifted from US$633/t to US$667.50/t overnight Wednesday, and carbonate was up slightly from US$8100 to US$8200/t. The price increase followed a surge on the GFEX, China's main lithium futures exchange and strengthened market sentiment. Global sentiment is also positive, even with an oversupply of lithium depressing prices (generally) demand growth is forecast to soar. That saw market bellwether Pilbara Minerals (ASX:PLS) run a remarkable 11.3% higher on Thursday, with Mineral Resources (ASX:MIN) up 7.8%. Liontown Resources (ASX:LTR) climbed 5% and IGO (ASX:IGO) rose 4.4%. Earlier this week, the Department of Industry, Science and Resources released its Resources and energy quarterly report, which flagged that Australia's lithium export earnings are forecast to increase from $4.6 billion in 2024–25 to $6.6 billion in 2026–27. That's largely driven by a growth in export volumes, with Australian mine output expected to grow by more than 7% a year to 2027. Compare that to global demand, expected to grow almost 15% a year to 2027, and outstripping supply growth at 14%. 'The accumulated surplus will persist to 2027 and possibly beyond,' the report said. But with low prices persisting, more product could well come out of the market, stirring a real price recovery as demand continues to increase. manganese and iron mineralising systems with assays expected through July and August. Manganese mineralisation has now been delineated along 2km of strike by the drill program and remains open to the north and east. Plus, shallow to outcropping hematite dominated iron was also intersected in multiple drill holes over hundreds of metres strike and remains open to the north. The company says it confirmed an exciting commodity diversification opportunity, with further drilling to extend and delineate these targets planned for August 2025. 'We are pleased to update that the program has been highly successful in advancing the understanding and confidence for both scale and grade for both commodities,' MD Brendan Cummins said. 'From an exploration perspective it rarely gets better than this when every hole drilled yields important information about the key parameters of the mineralisation that include potential grade, thickness, depth of cover and areal extents of the manganese and iron enrichment. 'What I find most remarkable is the consistency of the geology and mineralisation over thousands of metres, and in most circumstances is yet to be closed off. 'We look forward to updating the market as assay results come to hand over the coming weeks.' Lake has completed the front-end engineering design (FEED) study for the delivery of power to its flagship Kachi lithium brine project in Argentina. The study provides a solution for Kachi's electrical interconnection to the Argentine national grid, including proposed infrastructure routing, system specifications, and integration options tailored to Kachi's projected power demands. It's a solid milestone in the company's development plans for the project. Lake also welcomed the recent announcement by YPF Luz and Central Puerto S.A., which have signed a strategic agreement to jointly develop an electrical interconnection project aimed at enhancing power infrastructure and enabling sustainable mining growth in Argentina's Puna Region, which includes the Kachi site. 'The broader infrastructure initiative between YPF Luz and Central Puerto underscores the importance of bringing grid power to this region of Argentina to enable development of the country's resources in remote areas for Argentina to secure itself as a global leader in lithium supply,' CEO David Dickson said. The company says recent drilling at its Kameelburg rare earths and niobium project in Namibia has extended mineralisation to the north by a further 300m. The project has previously been compared to Niobec Saint-Honoré, which has has a resource of 640Mt at 0.41% niobium and 1.63% TREO. Notable new intercepts include: 193m grading 1.74% total rare earth oxides, 0,23% niobium pentoxide and 229ppm molybdenum in the upper REE dominant layer and 46m at 0.76% TREO and 0.45% Nb in the lower niobium dominant layer (ND002A); 35m at 1.6% TREO, 0.28% Nb and 225ppm Mo in the upper layer and two separate intersections of 30m at 0.81% TREO and 0.46% Nb and 58m at 0.92% TREO and 0.28% Nb in the lower layer (ND003); and 10m at 2.78% TREO, 0.24% Nb and 88ppm Mo in the upper layer and 330m at 0.95% TREO, 0.27% Nb and 130ppm Mo (ND006B). Aldoro is also acquiring two new diamond drill rigs which will arrive on site in September 2025 and are expected to enable the company to increase the drill depth from the current maximum of 510m to about 740m.
