Baghdad braces for crisis with food security strategy
Ministry spokesperson Mohammed Hanoun stated that the package includes contracts to import substantial quantities of rice, along with measures to secure domestic supplies of sugar and cooking oil. The plan also outlines steps to safeguard national storage facilities against climate-related risks, helping preserve the country's strategic reserves.
To ease potential supply chain pressures, the Iraqi government has introduced temporary customs exemptions on essential food imports and lifted administrative restrictions during emergencies.
The ministry has also increased wheat procurement prices to support farmers and reduce dependency on imports in case of global trade disruptions, adding, 'The ministry will distribute food aid to low-income families and other vulnerable groups, in addition to doubling the items included in Iraq's food ration card during peak crises.'
On the enforcement front, the ministry has activated emergency monitoring efforts, deploying 'round-the-clock field teams' to supervise markets, prevent price manipulation, and combat hoarding. Citizens are urged to report violations through the 'Raqibni' (Monitor Me) platform, with the ministry promising 'immediate and direct responses.'

Baghdad-INA Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani launched today, Saturday, the construction works for the first phase of the Second Beiji Gas Power Plant in Salah al-Din Province, with a total capacity of 1,014 megawatts. The Media Office of the Prime Minister said in a statement, received by the Iraqi news agency-INA,"The Prime Minister commended the efforts made to prepare for the launch of this important project, affirming that the energy sector serves as a foundation for any comprehensive development plan. He explained that the government has allocated the necessary financial resources to develop all sectors of electricity—generation, transmission, and distribution—in order to improve energy production across all regions of the country". The statement further elaborated that,"The project will be implemented by a consortium of Siemens Energy (Germany) and CSCEC (China). The contract includes the rehabilitation of six Siemens gas generation units, each with a capacity of 169 megawatts, for a total capacity of 1,014 megawatts. It also includes the establishment of a load dispatching network consisting of seven circuits at 400 kilovolts, which will feed six lines into the national grid, as well as the construction of a new 132-kilovolt network comprising 16 lines to serve Salah al-Din Province. The first two units are scheduled to be operational within 27 months, followed by the remaining units at a rate of one unit every two months".

Basrah crude posts weekly gains despite global oil dip
Shafaq News – Basrah Basrah crude grades closed lower on Friday but still recorded solid weekly gains, defying the broader decline in global oil prices. Basrah Heavy ended the session down $1.80 at $69.28 per barrel but registered a weekly increase of $1.85, or 2.75%. Similarly, Basrah Medium fell $1.80 in its last session to $72.33 per barrel while posting a weekly gain of $1.85, equivalent to 2.62%. Global oil prices retreated at the close of trading amid expectations of higher OPEC production and concerns that new US tariffs could weaken economic activity and dampen energy demand. Brent crude gained 4.9% over the week, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rose 6.4%.

Iraq studies green hydrogen, low-emissions cement initiatives
Baghdad ( – Iraq has launched a study that will examine the feasibility of green hydrogen generation as part of its clean energy policy. According to the state-run news agency (INA), the Ministry of Industry and Minerals is conducting the research in partnership with the Ministry of Electricity and the Ministry of Oil, as well as the National Investment Commission (NIC), with the participation of the private sector in the initiative. The Iraqi government is also studying approaches to build low-emission cement-producing plants. These efforts are part of Iraq's national energy strategy, which aims to reduce emissions by improving the utilization of energy and expanding the use of renewable sources, notably solar energy, in industrial operations. The ministry stated that its affiliated firms are prepared to develop solar power projects, with the government's goal of generating 12,000 megawatts of electricity from solar energy by 2030, as indicated in the statement. The Iraqi government is establishing a solar power plant in the central desert area as part of attempts to alleviate persistent electricity shortages caused by declining gas supplies from neighboring Iran. The new solar power plant will generate 300 megawatts of electricity using 500,000 solar panels, 39,000 of which have already been installed.
