Labour delivers mixed picture on environment after one year, campaigners say

Yahoo3 days ago
Labour's environmental record after one year in office shows 'glimmers of hope', but concerns remain over nature and anti-protest policies, green groups said.
Greenpeace UK and Friends of the Earth together assessed the party's progress on tackling the climate and nature crises ahead of Thursday, which marks one year since the general election.
The two groups said the Government's overall environmental record is a 'mixed picture'.
Assessing key policy areas, they rated the Government highest for its progress on climate and energy because of Energy Secretary Ed Miliband's efforts to reposition the UK as a global climate leader and oversee the UK's transition towards clean energy.
But the campaigners also criticised decisions to invest billions into nuclear power, carbon capture and storage (CCS) and roads, instead of funnelling more money towards carbon-cutting measures.
In terms of homes and transport, the groups welcomed investment in buses and railways, promotion of cleaner modes of transport and the requirement for landlords to raise energy efficiency standards.
However, they criticised Labour's support for airport expansion and said more money is needed to decarbonise these sectors if the UK is to meet its climate targets.
The Government fared worse on nature and the environment in the organisations' assessment.
While moving to ban bee-harming pesticides, launching reforms of the polluting water sector and banning bottom-trawling in some protected areas, the campaigners said planning reforms that sideline nature in pursuit of growth have been particularly alarming.
There has also been little progress on adopting laws to ensure UK companies do not contribute to illegal deforestation globally, nor the ratification of a UN treaty to protect 30% of the world's oceans by 2030, they added.
The Government saw the worst rating, however, in the policy areas of justice and democracy, with the groups claiming there has been an increase in arrests and imprisonment of non-violent protesters.
The campaigners also called for the introduction of taxes on the largest polluters through measures such as a stronger windfall tax on oil and gas profits, a frequent flyer levy and wealth taxes.
Mike Childs, head of science, policy and research at Friends of the Earth, said: 'There's no denying Labour has made some good progress on its clean energy mission, and it's extremely encouraging the Government remains committed to delivering on climate targets despite the breakdown in the political consensus.
'But where there have been some positive wins for nature, they've been overshadowed by false claims that protecting wildlife and vital habitats is hindering development.
'What has been most worrying is this Government's attitude to protest, which has seen it continue the last government's legacy of cracking down on dissent and encroaching on the right of us all to stand up for what we believe.'
Reshima Sharma, deputy head of politics at Greenpeace UK, said: 'This Government's record is like a dance pattern with impressive forward strides and sudden backwards steps.
'A year in, this administration certainly deserves much credit for holding the course on climate action and fully backing renewables, as well as investing in public transport, but championing a third runway at Heathrow is a blot on their climate record.
'Tough action on polluting water companies, bee-harming pesticides and destructive fishing are all welcome moves, but the obsession with putting growth above everything else risks undoing some of the good work on nature protection.'
The groups said improvement is needed across all four policy areas, arguing that action to protect the environment will actively benefit people's lives through cheaper energy bills, cleaner air, thousands of new jobs and a stronger economy.

Night Sky: How noctilucent clouds are made and Wales' space progress

This week saw a wonderful display of noctilucent clouds across the region as last Sunday evening's skies took on a dramatic and eerie appearance. Nick Edwards managed to capture the event over Newport, as the sun's rays reaching out from far below the horizon lit up tiny frozen water droplets high up in the Earth's atmosphere, creating the shimmering effect of wispy white clouds tinged with blue. Taken from the Latin for 'night-shining', we can expect further activity throughout the summer. We have a full moon on Thursday, July 10. This particular full moon is often referred to as a 'Buck Moon' because of the emergence of antlers on a deer buck's forehead during this part of the season. In Celtic folklore, terms such as 'Mead' or 'Herb' Moon can be found, with the Anglo-Saxons referring to it as a 'Hay Moon.' Space news and the proposed cuts to NASA's budget by the Trump administration will more than likely impact Europe's ExoMars rover mission which is already behind schedule. With the aim of placing a rover to explore the surface of Mars, it would seem the European Space Agency, (ESA), may have to go it alone. Recently, the Snowdonia Space Centre opened its Space Test and Training Centre, (STTC), with a day of demonstrations including rocket launches and the upward despatching of a high-altitude balloon. In a move to stay competitive with the rest of the UK and indeed Europe, the day signified Wales' intent to be at the forefront of enabling those interested in having their high-tech payloads delivered into space via rockets. It's a bold and innovative concept which is slowly gathering momentum but for those who lived during a Wales that was sustained by the coal industry and in more recent times the steel industry, a stark reminder that the shift in economic focus now lies firmly with the likes of such technology as 'microgravity manufacturing.' Attended by Rebecca Evans, MS, Welsh Government cabinet secretary for economy, energy, and planning, the new centre has received £820,000 of funding from the UK Space Agency with Matt Archer, its launch director, also in attendance. All told, with other financial contributions, £1.3 million has been invested with a view to boost the local economy and employment opportunities. With six other such Spaceports at sites including Argyll in western Scotland and Newquay in Cornwall, there has to be an exercise in caution following the announcement last week that the SaxaVord Spaceport in Lamba Ness, Shetlands Islands, (which appears to be further down the operational line than others), has delayed its first satellite launch from 2025 to 2026. Finally this week, the Earth's rotation during July and August is set to speed up with Wednesday, July 9, expected to be 1.30 milliseconds shorter than the usual length of a day. The speeding up over the two months is down to several factors, including sea levels, bucking the trend that overall rotation of the Earth is slowly down. Coca-Cola under fire as government launches investigation — here's what they're looking for

Coca-Cola, a brand that already faces a lot of scrutiny, is once again in hot water as the Turkish government has opened an investigation into the company's business practices. Turkey's Competition Board announced that it is investigating Coca-Cola over the possibility that the U.S.-based drink giant is running afoul of Turkey's competition law, according to Reuters. The board explained that this investigation was launched after increased suspicions that Coca-Cola was purposely trying to prevent and obstruct the sale of its competitors at its sales points. Also in the investigation, the board will determine if Coca-Cola complied with commitments it made to the board in 2021. This investigation has important environmental implications despite being legally framed as a competition issue. Coca-Cola has long faced criticism for its environmental impacts, particularly its role as a top contributor to global plastic pollution. If the company is found to have deliberately obstructed competitors from accessing retail space, it will show the dominance that large-scale, high-waste companies can still have over the market. This kind of dominance often comes at the expense of smaller beverage and food companies, many of which push for reusable packaging, local sourcing, and reduced levels of pollution. By limiting competition, Coca-Cola is stifling innovation in its industry and restricting consumer access to greener choices. It is also unclear how many other larger corporations may be following anti-competitive behavior in other industries. If Coca-Cola is found guilty, Turkey's Competition Board will have the opportunity to set a strong global precedent that other countries could look to follow. This case could encourage other countries to examine similar practices and support environmental groups pushing for greater corporate accountability. By taking action against Coca-Cola, Turkey will also send a clear message to other larger corporations that may also be attempting to obstruct their competition. As a consumer, you too have the power to influence corporations. Your purchasing power is an incredibly useful tool to let companies know that you support more environmentally friendly initiatives.
