Robotic umbrellas drum up a storm at Thrissur Pooram

The Hindu08-05-2025
This year, Kudamattam of Thrissur Pooram witnessed the debut of motion-enabled robotic umbrellas, adding a futuristic twist to the centuries-old tradition. The Paramekkavu Devaswom introduced these innovative umbrellas, featuring a robot child mimicking the movements of a traditional chenda (drum) artist.
The robotic umbrellas were developed by 'Robo Tuskers,' a student-faculty start-up from Jyothi Engineering College. Designed and built using advanced technology, the robotic drummers operated on specially written code, and the umbrellas are equipped with LED lighting to enhance the visual impact. According to the creators, the project is a creative response to the current socio-cultural climate.

4 of 7 microgravity tests done, Shubhanshu Shukla may undock on Tuesday

File photo: Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla BENGALURU: Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla , expected to undock from the International Space Station (ISS) at 4.35pm on July 14, has completed four of the seven Isro-led microgravity experiments. Shukla, who is part of the Axiom-4 (Ax-4) mission, is working on the other three that are nearing completion, Isro confirmed. The completed experiments are - Tardigrades (Bengaluru strain): focusing on survival, revival, reproduction, and transcriptomic changes in microgravity; Myogenesis: studying the effect of space on human muscle cell development; Sprouting of methi and moong seeds: with implications for in-orbit nutrition and food sustainability, and Cyanobacteria: tracking the growth of two variants for potential use in closed-loop life support systems. "These experiments are now being packed for their return to Earth for further analysis," Isro said. The three experiments nearing completion are - Microalgae: investigating its viability and applications in space; Crop seeds: studying growth responses to spaceflight conditions; and Voyager display: details of which remain undisclosed but are part of the scientific payload.

Box Office: Jurassic World: Rebirth sees a 150 percent jump on 2nd Saturday; Dinosaurs take on Superman in India

The Scarlett Johansson-led Jurassic World: Rebirth has seen a phenomenal jump at the box office in India on its second Saturday. According to early estimates, the film is looking to collect in the range of Rs 6.25 crore to Rs 6.75 crore on its ninth day, taking total collections to Rs 59.70 crore. The fourth film of the Jurassic World franchise has seen a 150 percent jump in business on the 2nd Saturday, from a 2nd Friday of Rs 2.75 crore. Jurassic World: Rebirth lost some screens to Superman, and Maalik in its second week, but is still continuing to dominate at the box office in India. In-fact, the film clocked better occupancy than Superman at most of the centres, and suffered primarily due to lack of screens. What's commendable is the fact that Jurassic World: Rebirth is dominating the ticket windows in India despite a no-release on IMAX properties. The Scarlett Johansson-led dinosaur saga is attracting family audiences too, and the franchise power has transported the film to the mass belts too. At the end of the second weekend, Jurassic World's total collections would stand in the vicinity of Rs 67 crore, and the film has a bright chance of entering the Rs 100 crore club in India if the third weekend shows a similar trend. Interestingly, Superman has clocked Rs 8.5 crore on its first Saturday, which is just 30 percent above the collections of Jurassic World on its second Saturday. Jurassic World is headed to be a 'Lambi-Race-Ka-Ghoda' in India, and has emerged BIG HIT at the box office. Week One: Rs 50.45 crore 2nd Friday: Rs 2.75 crore 2nd Saturday: Rs 6.50 crore (Expected) Total: Rs 59.70 crore

WHO recognises India's initiative in integrating AI with traditional medicine

New Delhi, July 12 (UNI) India's efforts in integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) with traditional medicine systems have been recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) in its newly released technical brief titled 'Mapping the Application of Artificial Intelligence in Traditional Medicine.' The document marks the first global roadmap on AI integration in traditional medicine and prominently features several Indian-led initiatives such as Ayush Grid and Ayurgenomics. It also acknowledged India as the first country to launch a Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), reflecting its long-standing commitment to preserving and digitising traditional medicinal knowledge. The release of the technical brief follows a proposal made by India at the WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine, leading to the formulation of this document. Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Ayush and Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, welcomed the recognition, noting that it reflects the deep commitment of Indian scientists and institutions. 'This underscores our alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to leverage technologies like AI to enhance the global relevance of Traditional Medicine,' he said. Jadhav cited several flagship platforms—SAHI portal, NAMASTE portal, and the Ayush Research Portal—as examples of how India is using digital technology to both preserve and globalise its traditional medicine systems. Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, stated that the WHO brief documents a slew of key AI-powered innovations from India, including Prakriti-based machine learning models for predictive diagnostics, AI applications for analysing pulse, tongue, and constitution types using neural networks among others. Further, the development of artificial chemical sensors to assess traditional parameters such as Rasa (taste), Guna (quality), and Virya (potency) was highlighted as a promising technological advancement in the standardisation of traditional formulations. The WHO brief also praised India's broader push toward digital health literacy among Ayush practitioners and efforts to build interoperable health systems that integrate traditional and allopathic medicine. The rise of online consultations and AI-powered diagnostic tools is considered an imperative part of a holistic push to modernise and expand access to traditional healthcare services. UNI AJ AAB GNK
