HD Hyundai to Transplant 'Korean Shipbuilding DNA' into India
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, the intermediate holding company overseeing HD Hyundai's shipbuilding operations, announced on Sunday, that it has signed a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), India's largest state-owned shipbuilder, to establish long-term cooperation in the shipbuilding sector.
CSL, with its main yard located in the southern Indian state of Kerala, Kochi, is the largest shipbuilding yard in India, with the Indian government holding a 67.91% stake. The company has extensive capabilities in the design, construction, and repair of a wide range of vessels, from commercial ships to aircraft carriers. Over the past five years, CSL has successfully delivered a total of 70 vessels, including 60 small commercial ships and 10 naval vessels.
Through this agreement, the two companies will pursue strategic cooperation across a range of areas, including design and procurement support for CSL, technical collaboration to enhance productivity and ensure global-quality standards, and the advancement of workforce capabilities through improved training systems. In particular, both parties have agreed to jointly explore new shipbuilding orders in the Indian and international markets.
The partnership aligns with India's maritime development roadmaps, including the 'Maritime India Vision 2030' and the 'Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047,' both announced by the Indian Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways to foster growth in the maritime industry. In support of these visions, India established a Maritime Development Fund worth approximately INR 250 billion (KRW 4 trillion) this year and is expanding policy support to strengthen its domestic shipbuilding sector and maritime infrastructure.
India's shipbuilding industry has witnessed rapid growth in recent years. According to market research firm Ken Research, the country's shipbuilding and repair market, valued at approximately USD 90 million in 2022, has surged to over USD 1.12 billion by 2024, a more than twelvefold increase. The market is expected to continue expanding at an average annual growth rate exceeding 60% until 2033.
Through this partnership, HD Hyundai aims to strengthen its presence in the Indian market, the world's most populous country, while further enhancing its global competitiveness in the shipbuilding industry.
'This collaboration will serve as a springboard for both HD Hyundai and CSL to reach new heights, while also marking a turning point in accelerating India's national maritime vision,' said an HD Hyundai official. 'By leveraging HD Hyundai's accumulated technological expertise and experience, we will support CSL in enhancing its global competitiveness, while also seeking opportunities for shared growth with Korean equipment suppliers.'
Meanwhile, HD Hyundai is actively expanding its global collaboration network beyond India. In April, the company signed an MOU with Huntington Ingalls Industries, the largest defense shipbuilder in the United States, followed by a strategic partnership agreement with Edison Chouest Offshore in June. In addition, HD Hyundai has been accelerating efforts to create synergies in the global shipbuilding sector by expanding defense cooperation, such as joint submarine development, with Peru's state-run SIMA shipyard in November of last year.

X blocks Reuters accounts in India
The main Reuters news account, as well as the Reuters World account, have apparently been inaccessible to X users in India since Saturday evening. Reuters reports that Indian users attempting to view the @Reuters account — which has 25 million followers — instead see a message stating that the account 'has been withheld in IN (India) in response to a legal demand.' However, an Indian government spokesperson told Reuters that no government agency has made such a demand. A Reuters spokesperson said the news agency is 'working with X to resolve this matter.' Reuters also says its social media team previously received a notification from X in May stating that the company was withholding content at the Indian government's request, though the notification did not specify which agency made the request or which content was being targeted. The social media platform formerly known as Twitter (which recently merged with another Elon Musk company, xAI) has criticized the Indian government over demands that it block certain accounts and posts. It even sued the government in March, claiming that a new website allows 'unrestrained censorship of information in India' by unlawfully enabling 'countless' public officials to take down content or block accounts. The government said the website only allowed it to notify companies about harmful online content. Last year, X also engaged in a protracted battle with Brazil's Supreme Court, which saw the service shut down operations in the country, then get banned for more than a month. TechCrunch has reached out to X for comment.

Trump's Big Beautiful Bill poses risks for Indian exporters
-- Indian exporters of auto parts and solar panels could face renewed pressure from Donald Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill,' even as the legislation may boost Indian IT services. 'The phase of policy volatility continues, and yet again, we have the US initiating something with global ramifications,' analysts at Bernstein say on the bill and the upcoming expiry of a pause on reciprocal tariffs. The legislation includes tax cuts expected to widen the US fiscal deficit by more than $3 trillion over a decade. The U.S. House on Wednesday narrowly approved a wide-ranging tax and spending bill. Proposals to keep import duties elevated which are still under discussion, would amount to a further $1.5tn –$2 trillion in de facto tariffs, leaving limited room to scale back existing trade barriers. While the bill could spur US consumption, capital expenditure, and digital modernisation, areas where Indian tech firms stand to gain, it also introduces headwinds for manufacturing exports. The removal of incentives for electric vehicles and the bill's emphasis on petrol-powered cars could weigh heavily on Indian auto component makers. Solar equipment exports, which have recently strengthened, may also be at risk. Another problem is Section 899, which could classify India as a 'Discriminatory Foreign Country,' potentially triggering higher US taxes on Indian IT and pharmaceutical companies operating there. A proposed cut in the remittance tax to 1 per cent would have a limited impact, reducing annual outflows from the US to India by just $110mn, compared with the $38bn total. 'The downside is significant, and the oceans murky,' Bernstein said, adding that the eventual impact will depend on the final shape of tariff provisions and any potential bilateral trade deal.
