Asian palm civet climbs pole to escape strays in Nilgiris

NILGIRIS: An Asian palm civet, chased by stray dogs, climbed onto an electric pole and remained there for close to half an hour before escaping near Sims Park in Coonoor on Tuesday morning.
Upon receiving information, Coonoor forest range staff, led by Forest Range Officer N Ravindranath, visited the spot at 10.15 am on Tuesday. They chased the dogs away and attempted to rescue the palm civet. However, it escaped the park by crawling along a power cable and reaching a nearby tree.
"Soon after the small nocturnal animal climbed the electric pole and stayed close to the power cable, we contacted TNPDCL staff to disconnect power supply. Subsequently, we prepared to rescue the animal and planned to release it back into the forest, but it got away," an official said.
The palm civet, also called the common palm civet, is listed as 'least concern' by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The official said that they have asked traders and residents to inform the department staff if they notice the palm civet again in residential areas.
"We suspect the animal, which is omnivorous, could have come near Sims Park to consume fruits, which are abundant in the locality," the official added.

"India A Surging Economy, Pakistan A Serial Borrower": New Delhi At UN

New York: India ripped into Pakistan at the United Nations on Tuesday, pointing out how New Delhi has aced on security, social, and financial parameters, while Islamabad remained steeped in terrorism, fanaticism, and serial borrowing. India is a mature democracy offering a stark contrast in progress, prosperity, and development models, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish told the UN Security Council, adding that the Asian neighbour is on the other extreme end. "India is a responsible actor, and a founding member of the United Nations as always actively engaged constructively with partners, especially at the United Nations, in collectively working towards a more peaceful, prosperous, and a just and equitable world," said Mr Harish. His remark came during the UNSC's high-level open debate on 'Promoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and Peaceful Settlement of Disputes'. While India is making strides in the global economy, Pakistan is busy borrowing from international platforms, Mr Harish pointed out. "India is a mature democracy, a surging economy, and a pluralistic and inclusive society. At the other extreme is Pakistan, steeped in fanaticism and terrorism and a serial borrower from the IMF," he said. Zero tolerance to terrorism is among the fundamental principles that must be recognised and respected, said Mr Harish, contending that Pakistan, on the other hand, indulges in unacceptable practices. "It ill behoves a member of the Council to offer homilies while indulging in practices that are unacceptable to the international community," he added. He also recalled the April 22 Pahalgam attack, in which Pakistani terrorists shot dead 26 innocent civilians, and said that India launched Operation Sindoor and targeted terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK). The military action was "focused, measured, and non-escalatory in nature", said Mr Harish. The action on May 7 saw heightened tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, including cross-border firings. The hostilities ended three days later, on May 10. India reiterated that it agreed to the ceasefire at the direct request of Pakistan, as it sought to clarify the facts after US President Donald Trump claimed credit for brokering peace between the two countries.

Indian embassy in contact with Irish authorities after Indian national attacked

The Embassy of India in Ireland has reached out to the Irish authorities and the civil society after an Indian citizen was viciously assaulted by right-wing gangs in Dublin over the weekend, Ambassador of India Akhilesh Mishra told The Hindu on Monday (July 21, 2025). 'The horrible attack has naturally caused widespread concern and fear in the local Indian community. Embassy is in touch with the victim, the larger community and has taken up the matter with various Irish authorities,' Ambassador Mishra said over the phone from Dublin informing that the male victim, an employee of Amazon, is receiving medical attention. The victim, in his forties, had arrived in Ireland only a week ago, sources told The Hindu, informing that the attacks against Indians and people of colour from other Asian and African countries are on the rise in Ireland. 'Ireland was not unsafe earlier, but over the past three years, the situation has dramatically changed because of the rise of violent racist gangs that target foreigners,' a diplomatic source said. Ireland has around one lakh Indians who are part of the high-income segment of the Irish economy. Ireland has traditionally been known for its tolerance and championing of justice globally. However, the recent spurt in racist attacks against foreigners has drawn attention from the expat Indian community, many of whom expressed shock online over the brutal attack on the Indian man during the weekend.

2,471 Indians rescued from scam centres in southeast Asian countries during 2022-25: Govt data

According to the data compiled by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), a unit under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), over 20,000 Indians are expected to be working in the scam compounds situated in Southeast Asia from where they are targeting Indians and citizens of other countries. The country-wise data of repatriated Indians shows that 1,089 were returned from Lao PDR, 800 from Cambodia and 582 from Myanmar from January 2022 to May 2025. 'Out of 1,089 repatriated Indians from Lao PDR, 145 are from Tamil Nadu, 129 from Maharashtra, 96 from J&K, 79 from UP, and 69 from Kerala. Among 800 Indians repatriated from Cambodia, 116 are from Kerala, 103 from UP, 95 from Tamil Nadu, 71 each from Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal,' a senior government official said, citing the data. Out of 582 repatriated Indians from Myanmar, the official said 65 are from UP, 61 from Maharashtra, 57 from Gujarat, 48 from Punjab and 34 from Karnataka. 'An analysis of cyber frauds this year revealed that they are targeting the Indian economy, and the country faces a loss of around Rs 1,000 crore every month to such crimes,' the official said. Data of unreturned passengers shows that 22,145 Indians, who went on visitor visas to Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam from January 1, 2022 to January 31 this year, have not returned till March 1. 'Out of the 22,145 Indians, 15,828 are in Thailand, 3,566 are in Vietnam, 2,121 are in Cambodia, 387 in Myanmar, and 243 are in Lao PDR. Of them, the highest number of people (3,358) have travelled from Punjab, 2,581 from UP, 2,441 are from Tamil Nadu, 1,978 from Kerala, 1,857 from Maharashtra, 1,477 from Haryana, 1,058 from Delhi, 973 from Gujarat, 876 from Karnataka and 740 are from Rajasthan,' another government official said. The Indian Express first reported that more than 5,000 Indians were suspected to be trapped in Cambodia after being allegedly held against their will and forced to carry out cyber fraud. 'Out of the 22,145 unreturned passengers, 7,811 are in the age group of 20-29, 6,682 in the 30-39, 3,204 in the 40-49 category, and 1,631 in the 50-59 bracket,' the official added. Following the directions of the MHA, multiple central agencies and state police have registered 178 FIRs and arrested 224 people on charges of job fraud, cheating and others. A probe has revealed that there are three types of major cybercrime frauds operating from Southeast Asia: stock trading/investment scams, digital arrest, and task-based and investment-based scams.
