Britons are feeling the pinch from higher taxes, weak economic growth and now US tariffs adding to the uncertainty. But one industry's customers appear to be sailing through relatively unscathed: luxury yacht buyers."Large yachts are still selling strongly," Joe Hill, sales director of motor yachts at British maker Princess, said at last week's British Motor Yacht Show at Swanwick Marina on England's south coast. Pointing to a model costing 4.3 million ($5.7 million) before value-added tax, he said: "If you have that as disposable income you're probably riding over the peaks and troughs of the economy anyway."Wealthy buyers are still splashing the cash on high-end yachts decked out with their own trim and other personalised features, contributing to an industry worth an estimated 1.4 billion. But less wealthy consumers aren't immune to the slowdown. They've been reining in spending, with a drop in demand for smaller and slightly more affordable yachts "There are still plenty of people spending money at the top end, but at the lower end it's quieter," said Dave Cockwell, founder of Cockwells, a Cornwall-based boutique builder that makes classic-style boats with upgraded technology. There were "more inquiries than ever" for bigger boats, but smaller ones struggled to attract buyers, he said.Yacht sales boomed during the Covid-19 pandemic as wealthy people sought ways to spend their money, with overseas travel limited and restrictions tight. Since then, sales have eased.Still, larger yachtmakers continue to enjoy strong demand. Sanlorenzo SpA, an Italian manufacturer listed in Milan, reported an 11% increase in net revenue for new yachts to ₹930 million last year, powered by its superyacht division.The yacht show in Swanwick - which featured 45 boatmakers - pulled out all the stops to reel in the roughly 1,500 potential buyers. A lobster stall served hungry customers, while those ready to make an offer could step into luxurious lounges put on by the major yacht companies with free food and wine.The show also talked up how buying a yacht is free of stamp duty. That's become a bigger selling point after the Labour government last year raised the surcharge on second-home purchases to 5% from 3%.Sanlorenzo, which makes boats starting at 6.5 million, lured wealthy buyers with its two luxury vessels on display. The SX76 sleeps eight guests and two crew with a large saloon, dining room and full-size kitchen as well as extensive outdoor space, while its SL96A was custom-built for a client with a dark wood interior and several modern art pieces.But boatmakers had less luck securing deals for their smaller vessels. People at that end of the market, who are potentially testing their financial limits, might buy a boat on finance, said Princess's Hill, and high interest rates might make them hold off purchasing for now.Smaller and cheaper boats - like Princess' V40 which starts at 700,000 - have seen weaker sales over the last few years, Hill said. The Plymouth-based company, which employs around 2,400 people, makes boats ranging from 40 feet to 95 feet long.It's a similar story for Rib-X, which makes speedy craft that can be used for sports, and tenders, which are smaller boats used as lifeboats or support vessels for large yachts. Sales of its smaller vessels have slumped around 40% in the past year, estimates Ross Collingwood, chief executive officer of Rib-X owner Vortec Group.

New Delhi-based real estate firm Jaiprakash Infratech Ltd is preparing to challenge in court the rejection of its bid to acquire Jaiprakash Associates Ltd, potentially delaying the bankruptcy resolution of the debt-laden infrastructure and cement major. Lenders turned down Jaiprakash Infratech's offer citing an insufficient earnest money deposit (EMD), according to people familiar with the matter. The company had proposed a lien over fixed deposits in place of a ₹100 crore deposit. However, the bid was rejected on grounds of non-compliance with the prescribed format and delays in submission. 'The lien over the fixed deposits was legally valid and submitted on time,' said a person close to the company, who asked not to be named. 'We have no option but to move the court and remain in the race.' Jaiprakash Infratech was taken over by Mumbai-based Suraksha Group in June 2024. The firm is currently focused on completing stalled housing projects that have left homebuyers waiting for over a decade. Jaiprakash Associates was referred for debt resolution after defaulting on loans worth ₹57,000 crore. In March, Indian lenders transferred the dues to the National Asset Reconstruction Company (NARCL). The resolution process may now face further delay, even as Gautam Adani's group has emerged as the lead contender with an unconditional bid. Competing offers from Dalmia Bharat, Vedanta Group, Jindal Power, and PNC Infratech reportedly include various conditions. Lenders have asked all bidders to submit revised, unconditional offers as the process progresses. Several of the conditional offers hinge on the fate of Jaiprakash Associates' 1,000-hectare Sports City project in Greater Noida. In March, the Allahabad High Court upheld the cancellation of land allotment for the project by the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority. That decision is currently under appeal in the Supreme Court.

India is rapidly emerging as a key destination for climate capital, driven by rising demand for clean electric alternatives and a growing push from heavy industries towards zero-emission technologies . The country has attracted more than $2 billion in climate-focused capital over the past year alone, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) data. Over the past 8-12 months, major climate investors such as TPG Rise Climate, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, LeapFrog Investments, Lowercarbon Capital, and Fullerton Fund Management have moved beyond cautious pilot projects to make strategic bets in India's energy and clean tech sectors. This influx of climate funding is fuelled not only by environmental urgency, but also by a confluence of favourable factors: cost parity with traditional energy sources, inflection in consumer demand and supportive policy frameworks. India's clean energy demand is increasingly being powered by essential services — including logistics, cooling and distributed power — rather than discretionary consumption. Long-term scalability This shift provides investors with confidence in both long-term scalability and durable margins, say industry experts. 'There's been a marked uptick in growth and infrastructure capital doubling down on platform plays across circularity, e-mobility, OEMs, battery lifecycle management and energy storage,' said Nakul Zaveri, partner and co-head of Climate Investment Strategy at LeapFrog Investments, which plans to commit over $500 million to climate solutions. A key part of this strategy includes a $60 million investment by the European Investment Bank (EIB), with additional backing from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Temasek. Globally, climate finance surpassed $2 trillion in 2024, with a significant portion of private capital flowing into electric mobility , battery storage and green infrastructure. Singapore-based Fullerton Fund Management recently made its first investment under the Fullerton Carbon Action Fund, acquiring an equity stake in Routematic, an AI-driven corporate transport company in India. 'Climate finance in India is poised for a surge, increasingly driven by market economics,' reckons Akhil Jain, investment lead at Fullerton Carbon Action Fund. 'Clean energy and key segments of electric transport are now at or beyond cost parity with conventional options.' This shift is reshaping investment patterns. Funds are increasingly focused on companies with strong revenue models and proprietary technology. 'There's surging demand for low-emission, resource-efficient technologies, especially in sectors like transport and energy,' said Shailesh Vickram Singh, founder of Climate Angels, which has backed 22 startups in the EV, clean air and climate tech space over the past two to three years. Rather than backing isolated innovations, investors are now prioritising integrated operators who can build full value chains and deliver resilient, scalable infrastructure solutions. 'What was once seen as high-risk is now attracting a premium, especially for operators executing climate strategies at scale,' said Zaveri. This evolution also reflects a broader recognition of the importance of embedding adaptation into climate solutions. 'Capital is now flowing towards companies that reduce emissions and also build resilience—across sectors like waste, cooling and mobility,' noted Vasudha Madhavan, founder & CEO of Ostara Advisors, an investment bank focused on electric mobility. Industry leaders see this as an inflection point. Over the next 2-3 years, climate finance in India is expected to deepen its focus on scalable technologies with the potential to transform high-emission sectors. 'This is a pivotal moment,' Madhavan added. 'Climate finance is shifting from small, fragmented bets to strategic, high-value investments that can accelerate the clean transition at scale.'
