Blue Jays put OF George Springer on concussion list

Reuters4 days ago
August 2 - The Toronto Blue Jays placed slugging outfielder George Springer on the 7-day concussion list Friday, four nights after he was hit in the head with a pitch.
The move was made before Friday's game against the Kansas City Royals. It is retroactive to Tuesday.
Springer was plunked by Orioles right-hander Kade Strowd during Monday's 11-4 loss to Baltimore. Springer was face down on the ground for more than a minute, but he remained alert before eventually being helped off the field.
Springer, 35, is batting .291 with 18 homers and 57 RBIs in 101 games this season -- the four-time All-Star's best showing as a hitter since 2021.
Toronto also activated center fielder Daulton Varsho (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list. Varsho last played for the Blue Jays on May 31 when he was injured while trying to leg out a triple against the Athletics.
Varsho, 29, is batting .207 with eight homers and 20 RBIs in 24 games.
The Blue Jays also optioned right-hander Paxton Schultz to Triple-A Buffalo. The 27-year-old owns a 4.56 ERA in 12 appearances (two starts) for Toronto this season.

Cancer-stricken Guardians pitcher Nic Enright gets first career save midway through treatment

Cleveland Guardians relief pitcher Nic Enright got his first major league save on Monday as the 28-year-old rookie awaits a much bigger save opportunity this November: His final cancer treatment. 'He was almost crying on the field just now,' Guardians manager Stephen Vogt told reporters afterwards. 'If you read his story, it´s pretty inspirational.' Diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in late 2022, Enright nonetheless fought his way to the majors to make his debut on May 25 and has since posted an impressive 2.01 earned-run average over 19 appearances. Now, with All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase on paid leave amid a sports gambling probe, Enright has been asked to handle high-leverage situations, such as Monday's extra-innings battle against the Mets in Queens. Entering with a 7-5 lead in the 10th inning, Enright surrendered one unearned run on an RBI-single to Brett Baty but managed to get Luis Torrens to fly out to right to end the game. 'I definitely held my breath as I saw [Guardians right fielder Nolan Jones] kind of keep running,' Enright told reporters. 'But I had faith. As he kind of got closer to the wall, I realized it was losing steam.' Enright was originally selected by the Guardians out of Virginia Tech in the 20th round of the 2019 amateur draft. He'd be picked up by the Miami Marlins in the Rule 5 draft in 2022, only to be diagnosed with Hodkin Lymphoma 15 days later. Since then, he's undergone several rounds of immunotherapy and other treatments, while continuing to work towards his dream of pitching in the big leagues. 'I made the decision when I was diagnosed in 2022 with Hodgkin lymphoma that I wasn´t going to let that define my life and dictate how I was going to go about my life,' Enright said. 'It´s something where, for anyone else who is going through anything similar, [it shows] I haven´t just holed up in my house and felt sorry for myself this whole time.' Enrich was ultimately cut by the Marlins in 2023 before returning to the Guardians in May of that year and quietly turning himself into one of the better relief pitchers in Triple-A Columbus. Despite shoulder issues, he posted a miniscule 1.06 ERA in 16 appearances for Columbus in 2024 and was equally effective this season before being called up to the Guardians in May. Among Enright's keepsakes from Monday are the ball from the final out, his jersey and the lineup card, all of which he plans to set aside at the home he shares with his wife, Erin, whom he credits along with his other family members for their support. 'These last couple of years, especially, I've gone through a lot of adversity and just everything that's gone on,' Enright said, as quoted by The Associated Press. 'And so for me, it's being able to reflect on those in these moments. I think that helps being able to slow the game down. Because it hasn't exactly been a red-carpet rollout for my career trajectory.'

US Open fears for Novak Djokovic as 38-year-old is forced to pull out of warmup event after worrying ‘fitness' remarks

NOVAK Djokovic is a fitness doubt for the US Open after a late withdrawal from this week's Cincinnati Open. The Serbian tennis superstar will head this month to New York – where he has been a four-time champion – with no singles prep time on the North American hard courts this summer. 3 3 The sport's greatest player pulled out of the prestigious Ohio tournament, where he has been a winner on three occasions, citing a non-medical reason. Should he play, he would take part in the US Open draw with his last singles appearance being in the Wimbledon semi-finals, where he was outclassed in three sets by eventual champion Jannik Sinner. The 38-year-old is scheduled to play in the reimagined US Open Mixed Doubles tournament on August 19-20 alongside compatriot Olga Danilovic. The singles first round of the last Slam of the year begins at Flushing Meadows on Sunday August 24. Djokovic, who has been holidaying in a Greek resort with his family, has decided in recent years to prioritise the majors over the ATP Masters series. Despite his advancing years, Djokovic has been very competitive this year, making the semi-finals of the three majors this calendar year. Yet he admitted following that Sinner last-four 6-3 6-3 6-4 defeat on Centre Court that he now struggles to beat the Italian and Spain's two-time Wimbledon conqueror Carlos Alcaraz. In a candid assessment, Djokovic said, "It's tough for me to accept because I feel like when I'm fresh, I can still play really good tennis. I've proven that this year. "The longer the tournament goes, the worse the condition gets. I reached the semis of every slam this year but I've to play Sinner or Alcaraz. "These guys are fit, young, sharp. Novak Djokovic waves goodbye to Wimbledon crowd "I feel like I'm going into the match with the tank half empty. "It's just not possible to win a match like that." The world No.6 is chasing Slam No.25, which would move him ahead of Margaret Court's 1973 record. In May, a week after splitting with coach Andy Murray, he won the Geneva Open, which was his 100th tour-level title. The Cincinnati Open runs from August 7-18. 3 Djokovic's slam titles Australian Open (10) - 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2023 French Open (3) - 2016, 2021, 2023 Wimbledon (7) - 2011, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 US Open (4) - 2011, 2015, 2018, 2023 And the US Open will begin on Sunday 24 August at Flushing Meadows in New York. Sinner won the men's singles event last year, beating American Taylor Fritz in straight sets in the final. Djokovic's last US Open title was in 2023. That was the last slam title the Serbian star has lifted with Alcaraz and Sinner dominating in 2024 and 2025. Djokovic also won in New York in 2011, 2015 and 2018.
