Music icon John Williamson performs near Birdsville in place of Big Red Bash
A crowd of 1,000 sang along to John Williamson's True Blue as the sun set over the Munga-Thirri Simpson Desert and reflected upon the lingering floodwater.
The intimate concert this week was a stand-in for the popular Big Red Bash, which is on hiatus this year, and a nod to how the bash began in 2013.
"To hear it in the flesh was amazing, very emotional," concertgoer Sharon Wilson from New South Wales said.
Volunteer Thomas Kessell, from Perth, said Williamson swallowed a few flies during the performance.
"But I'm sure he's writing lyrics about it right now," he said.
The Simpson Desert is known for its challenging terrain, and for the past 11 years has hosted Australia's most remote music festival, the Big Red Bash.
But last year, festival organiser Greg Donovan announced his team would be taking a break in 2025.
"Once we decided to do that, there was a lot of talk about the impact on tourism. It brings so much tourism to the outback," he said.
Mr Donovan put on an intimate two-night concert capped at 1,000 tickets each night.
"We had John Williamson play on the Big Red dune behind us. The Big Red Bash really came from that little music event, and we built it up to a big three-day festival with 10,000 people over 10 years," he said.
"It's really nice to just remember how it was in the beginning; it was basic but really nice up on the dune."
It will likely be the last time John Williamson performs in Birdsville, after 55 years touring Australia.
Williamson said singing on top of Big Red was an honour and a novelty.
"I've got an audience that wants to hear my music who have gone to that much effort to be here, so I'm honoured by it."
The township of Birdsville, nestled in the bottom corner of Queensland, was cut off for around six weeks earlier this year as record-breaking flooding made its way through the outback.
It has been a tough and slow start to a tourism season that typically starts in April.
But those who are now making the trek get to see the desert in bloom.
Glenn David Taylor travelled from Beenleigh with his father and son.
"It's our first time out this far west. It's a bit of a bucket list tick off," he said.
For Cheryl Crossland, from Far North Queensland, it was her seventh time attending the Birdsville event.
"It's unique because it's on top of Big Red and I love John Williamson," she said.
The Big Red Bash has become a lifeline to businesses and tourism operators in Birdsville.
They have a six-month window before the desert heat sets in and travellers drop off.
Diamantina Shire Council Mayor Francis Murray said when news broke last year of the bash's hiatus, locals put their heads together to fill a gap in the calendar.
They came up with the idea for a camel carnival, featuring market stalls, live acts, and camel rides.
"Without the bash, we thought we still had to get that crowd here," Cr Murray said.
"There's already camel racing in Jundah, Bedourie and Boulia, so we've marketed it as a camel trail and put this on in Birdsville."
Mr Donovan assured fans that the Big Red Bash would be back next year.
"We don't have any grand plans to change the format … as long as there is demand," he said.

The beloved Australian star looked like a picture-perfect bride when she walked down the aisle last month at her wedding to husband Matthew Copley. Delta Goodrem has posted pictures from her recent wedding to Matthew Copley. Picture: Instagram/Vogue Goodrem looked like a picture perfect bride as she walked down the aisle. Picture: Instagram/Vogue. Goodrem wore a stunning gown by Paolo Sebastian creative director and designer Paul Vasileff, who have been 'creative partners' for close to a decade. 'I always knew what I wanted my wedding dress to be,' she told Vogue. 'And I knew the perfect designer for it. Paul and I connected the second I got engaged, and we started working together immediately. I am very lucky I get to wear beautiful dresses as part of my job, so I wanted this one to feel super personal and very special.' The resulting lace gown 'was structured, yet still delicate and feminine', Goodrem said. 'It was a statement piece but a fairytale dress. The sweeping train and the tulle cathedral veil perfectly suited the style of the wedding and the surroundings.' Following the ceremony, she changed into two reception dresses, both designed by Con Ilio. The pair returned to the country that Copley proposed in. Picture: Instagram/Vogue. Goodrem shared the images to Instagram alongside a heartfelt caption. 'June 2025, Husband and Wife. It was more magical than we both could have dreamed,' she wrote. 'We said I do under the Maltese skies in a family fairytale wedding brought to life by so many angels surrounding us. We are holding on to every memory from that moment, the love, the laughter, the happy tears and dancing till the sun came up.' She added: 'We can't wait to come back to Australia and celebrate as Mr & Mrs.' In her interview with Vogue, which featured more pictures exclusively to its website, Goodrem opened up about how special it felt to be back in Malta, where Copley proposed in 2023. 'Matt proposed to me two years ago in a very romantic setting in Malta. We were there playing an incredible televised festival with all of our loved ones and friends on the trip,' Goodrem recalled. The pair were surrounded by close family and friends. Picture: Instagram/Vogue 'A couple of days later it was just us, going to what I thought was a lovely dinner after a day out on the water. Matt set up an incredibly romantic scene in the iconic gardens of The Phoenicia Hotel in Valetta, overlooking the city's majestic harbour. 'White rose petals, fairy lights throughout the gardens and a string quartet at sunset — it was magical. So it was a full circle moment getting to bring our family and friends back to the hotel for the wedding week. The Phoenicia and everyone there made it feel like home again.' Goodrem's near-decade-long relationship with Copley followed a string of high-profile romances with other celebrities – including Nick Jonas, Brian McFadden and Mark Philippoussis – earlier in her career. ‘Nuclear': Network 10's desperate bid to save 10 News+ as show loses half its viewers
Channel 10 bosses have been left scrambling after pinning all their hopes on The Project's replacement, 10 News+, only for it to become a total bomb. The show, fronted by journalists Amelia Brace and Denham Hitchcock, has been panned by viewers who have switched over in droves following its debut on June 30. According to a TV insider, Network 10 has flailed following horrendous ratings. The audience The Project was still attracting has halved within a fortnight, in what can only be labelled an unmitigated disaster for executives. While it was announced last week that Georgie Tunny would be joining the show, an insider claimed she's set to become the face of the already-ailing show in a bid to win back The Project's audience. 'She's the one they're betting on,' a production source told The Daily Mail. 'She has the polish, she's already known to viewers, and she connects in a way that Denham and Amelia haven't managed to.' 'They wanted a fresh start, but they didn't realise how loyal The Project's audience still was – and how brutal the 6pm slot is,' a former 10 producer said, adding the network is 'scrambling'. 'Everyone's talking like it's (10's failed breakfast TV program) Wake Up all over again – and we all know how that ended.' Publicly, Network 10 has insisted that attracting new viewers is 'a marathon, not a sprint', but the insider added that behind the scenes 'even Paramount bosses in LA' have been forced to step in. 'There's real concern that if this tanks completely, it could kill 10's news investment for years,' they said. A 10 spokesperson said last week that the network was 'taking a long-term, multi-platform view of audience development'. 'Building a loyal news audience takes time, and we are prepared for gradual growth as audiences discover and connect with our unique approach to news delivery across many platforms,' they said in a statement. '10 is fully committed to 10 News+. This is a marathon, not a sprint. We are investing in building a sustainable, quality multi-platform news service that will grow and evolve with our audience's needs over time.' Last Tuesday evening, 10 News+ recorded an average of 244,000 viewers, before attracting 205,000 on Wednesday and 159,000 on Thursday. Numbers dipped again on Friday, with an average audience of just 152,000.
