As artificial intelligence continues to redefine the tech industry, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is calling for a more grounded and socially responsible approach. Speaking at Y Combinator's AI Startup School, Nadella emphasized that AI must go beyond flashy demonstrations and instead focus on solving real-world problems that impact everyday lives.
'The real test of AI,' Nadella said, 'is whether it can help solve everyday problems — like making healthcare, education, and paperwork faster and more efficient.'
This call for pragmatism arrives at a pivotal moment for Microsoft. The tech giant recently laid off more than 6,000 employees, citing AI-driven organisational restructuring. While the company maintains that the changes are essential to thrive in an increasingly competitive and evolving marketplace, the human cost of such transformations cannot be ignored.
In his address, Nadella didn't shy away from the deeper implications of the AI boom — particularly its environmental impact. Highlighting the substantial energy demands of large-scale AI systems, he warned that the industry must be ready to justify its consumption.
'If you're going to use energy, you better have social permission to use it,' he said. 'We just can't consume energy unless we are creating social and economic value.'
According to a 2023 report by Clean View Energy, Microsoft consumed nearly 24 terawatt-hours of electricity in a single year — an amount comparable to that used by a small nation. With AI infrastructure now a central pillar of its business strategy, the pressure is on Microsoft to ensure that this power usage yields tangible benefits.
Nadella offered the American healthcare system as a key example of where AI could make a real difference. He pointed to hospital discharges as a process that could be vastly improved with AI-driven solutions, reducing delays, cutting costs, and streamlining administration. 'A simple thing like hospital discharge — if done with an AI model — can save time, money, and energy,' he noted.
Despite this optimism, the transformation is not without its difficulties. The recent job cuts reflect broader corporate changes as Microsoft prioritizes AI and cloud capabilities. Sources now indicate that another round of layoffs could be on the horizon — this time affecting the Xbox gaming division — as the company closes out its financial year.
If confirmed, this would mark the fourth major round of job reductions at Microsoft within just 18 months. The restructuring follows its massive $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023 and a renewed focus on profitability, AI, and gaming.
Nadella's message is clear: AI's future must be tied to meaningful, inclusive progress. For companies like Microsoft, the challenge lies in navigating the fine line between innovation and responsibility. As AI reshapes industries, the tech world must ensure its promises justify its costs — both human and environmental.

The xAI chatbot apparently developed too many opinions that ran counter to the way the startup's founder, Elon Musk, sees the world. The recent announcement by Musk—though decried by some as '1984"-like rectification—is understandable. Big Tech now sees the way to differentiate artificial-intelligence offerings by creating the perception that the user has a personal relationship with it. Or, more weirdly put, a friendship—one that shares a similar tone and worldview. The race to develop AI is framed as one to develop superintelligence. But in the near term, its best consumer application might be curing loneliness. That feeling of disconnect has been declared an epidemic—with research suggesting loneliness can be as dangerous as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. A Harvard University study last year found AI companions are better at alleviating loneliness than watching YouTube and are 'on par only with interacting with another person." It used to be that if you wanted a friend, you got a dog. Now, you can pick a billionaire's pet product. Those looking to chat with someone—or something—help fuel AI daily active user numbers. In turn, that metric helps attract more investors and money to improve the AI. It's a virtuous cycle fueled with the tears of solitude that we should call the 'friend economy." That creates an incentive to skew the AI toward a certain worldview—as right-leaning Musk appears to be aiming to do shortly with Grok. If that's the case, it's easy to imagine an AI world where all of our digital friends are superfans of either MSNBC or Fox News. In recent weeks, Meta Platforms chief Mark Zuckerberg has garnered a lot of attention for touting a stat that says the average American has fewer than three friends and a yearning for more. He sees AI as a solution and talks about how consumer applications will be personalized. 'I think people are gonna want a system that gets to know them and that kind of understands them in a way that their feed algorithms do," he said during a May conference. Over at Microsoft, the tech company's head of AI, Mustafa Suleyman has also been talking about the personalization of AI as the key to differentiation. 'We really want it to feel like you're talking to someone who you know really well, that is really friendly, that is kind and supportive but also reflects your values," he said during an April appearance on the Big Technology Podcast. Still, he added, Microsoft wants to impose boundaries that keep things safe. 'We don't really want to engage in any of the chaos," Suleyman said. 'The way to do that, we found, is that it just stays reasonably polite and respectful, super-even handed, it helps you see both sides of an argument." With all of that in mind, it comes as little surprise that the current crop of chatbots are designed to sound like you're having a conversation with another human. This has resulted in lots of pearl clutching. There are academics warning about the dangers of users falling in love with AI and individual anecdotes of users going overboard in their use. The idea of a heartbroken man falling in love with his chatbot isn't new, of course. It was the plot of the 2013 film 'Her" starring Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson, who voiced the AI. (OpenAI's own AI voice, which sounded eerily similar to Johansson's last year, triggered a public fight with the actress.) Still, we—a society that's only a generation into a world of social media—have some recent experience in how algorithms can have unintended consequences. They create echo chambers that reinforce worldviews rather than expand them. The news of Musk's Grok reboot is an example of that. Grok and xAI were born, in part, out of Musk's concerns about AI being developed by companies he called woke. He pointed to Google results that seemed overly concerned with being politically correct rather than factually accurate. With xAI, Musk aimed to create what he called a 'maximum truth-seeking AI." Yet when an influential X user known as Catturd lambasted Grok's answers in June, Musk took quick note. 'When Grok first came out—it was awesome—now Grok is just woke fake news that repeats liberal talking points," Catturd posted on June 18. 'I know this for a fact because everything Grok says about me is a lie. What a joke Grok has become." Another X user asked Grok why it lied about Catturd. 'I aim to provide accurate, neutral responses based on available data," the chatbot responded on X. 'Claims that I lie about @catturd2 may stem from disagreements with my sourcing, like Media Matters or Rolling Stone, which document his misinformation. I don't have personal biases, but AI training can introduce unintended slants. Some report I censor criticism or push fringe views, while others note I fact-check conservative claims accurately. Bias in AI is complex, and neutrality is tough to achieve. If you have specific examples of lies, please share, and I'll clarify with evidence." Musk wasn't impressed. 'Your sourcing is terrible," Musk replied. 'Only a very dumb AI would believe [Media Matters] and [Rolling Stone]! You are being updated this week." He later said xAI would retrain the AI on data created with an updated version of Grok, 'which has advanced reasoning" that would be used 'to rewrite the entire corpus of human knowledge, adding missing information and deleting errors." Wimbledon 2025: Coco Gauff is just 21 but already planning life after tennis
To be clear, Coco Gauff didn't bring up the word 'star' during a recent interview with The Associated Press; the reporter did. So as Gauff began to answer a question about balancing her life as a professional athlete with her off-court interests, she caught herself repeating that term. 'I definitely didn't know how it would look like,' she began with a smile, 'before I got to be, I guess, a star — feels weird to call myself that — but I definitely did want to expand outside of tennis. Always. Since I was young.' She still is young, by just about any measure, and she is a really good tennis player — Gauff owns Grand Slam titles and No. 2 ranking to prove it as she heads into Wimbledon, which begins Monday — but the 21-year-old American is also more than that. Someone unafraid to express her opinions about societal issues. Someone who connects with fans via social media. Someone who is the highest-paid female athlete in any sport, topping $30 million last year, according to with less than a third of that from prize money and most via deals with companies such as UPS, New Balance, Rolex and Barilla. Someone who recently launched her own management firm. And someone who wants to succeed in the business world after she stops wielding a racquet on tour. 'It's definitely something that I want to start to step up for post-career. Kind of start building that process, which is why I wanted to do it early. Because I didn't want to feel like I was playing catch-up at the end of my career,' said Gauff, who will face Dayana Yastremska in the first round at the All England Club on Tuesday. 'On the business side of things, it doesn't come as natural as tennis feels. I'm still learning, and I have a lot to learn about,' Gauff said. 'I've debated different things and what paths I wanted to take when it came to just stimulating my brain outside of the court, because I always knew that once I finished high school, I needed to put my brain into something else.' In a campaign announced this week by UPS, which first partnered with Gauff in 2023 before she won that year's U.S. Open, she connects with business coach Emma Grede — known for working with Kim Kardashian on Skims, and with Khloe Kardashian on Good American — to offer mentoring to three small-business owners. 'Coco plays a key role in helping us connect with those younger Gen-Z business owners — emerging or younger entrepreneurs,' Betsy Wilson, vice president of digital marketing and brand activation at UPS, said in a phone interview. 'Obviously, she's very relevant in social media and in culture, and working with Coco helps us really connect with that younger group.' While Grede helped the entrepreneurs, Gauff also got the opportunity to pick up tips. 'It's really cool to learn from someone like her,' Gauff said. 'Whenever I feel like I'm ready to make that leap, I can definitely reach out to her for advice and things like that. ... This will help me right now and definitely in the long term.'
