UN experts on Israel-Palestine resign after US imposes sanctions on colleague
The UN Human Rights Council, which established the Commission of Enquiry, confirmed the resignations on Monday. The letters were submitted last week but only became public this week.
Their departure follows mounting political pressure. Last week, the United States imposed sanctions on Francesca Albanese, another UN-appointed expert focused on Israel and Palestine.
Israel has consistently refused to cooperate with the commission, rejecting its legitimacy, denying entry to investigators, and accusing the panel of bias. Despite repeated requests, the government has blocked all access to Israeli and occupied Palestinian territory.

'Chivalrous Knight 3' launch biggest water supply project to Gaza
At a press conference held at the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility (CMWU) headquarters in Deir al Balah, the operation revealed that a new 315mm water transmission line, stretching 6.7 kilometres, is now under construction. He added that the UAE has consistently led relief efforts in Gaza, from building desalination stations and delivering water tankers to drilling wells and maintaining water networks, culminating in this vital initiative aimed at securing safe drinking water for the most affected areas. Omar Shatat, Deputy Director-General of the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility for Technical Affairs, expressed gratitude to the UAE, which has been on the frontlines of humanitarian support since the onset of the war. He noted that UAE-funded projects have helped municipalities and civil society institutions maintain essential services amid extremely challenging conditions. Khalil Abu Shammala, a representative of civil society in Gaza, praised the UAE's crucial role and the humanitarian projects implemented under the Operation Chivalrous Knight 3. He also emphasised that initiatives like this provide residents with access to safe and healthy water, strengthening their resilience in the face of persistent crises. This initiative marks a new chapter in Operation Chivalrous Knight 3's efforts to repair critical infrastructure in Gaza, particularly in the water sector, and is part of broader UAE-led humanitarian operations to mitigate the disaster and support the steadfastness of the local population.

Francesca Albanese urges countries to cut all ties with Israel over Gaza war
The UN's special rapporteur for the Palestinian territories on Tuesday urged countries to make concrete moves to stop the 'genocide' in Gaza. Francesca Albanese spoke to delegates from 30 countries who met in Colombia's capital to discuss the Israel-Gaza war and ways that nations can try to stop Israel's military offensive in the territory. 'Each state must immediately review and suspend all ties with the state of Israel … and ensure its private sector does the same,' Ms Albanese said. 'The Israeli economy is structured to sustain the occupation that has now turned genocidal.' She stressed the importance of completely cutting ties. 'Cutting ties only with the components that are in the occupied territories would only treat the symptoms,' Ms Albanese said. She has previously accused Israel of carrying out one of the 'cruellest genocides in modern history'. The two-day conference is the first meeting of the Hague Group, a collection of developing countries who have vowed to uphold the rulings of the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court with respect to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Many of the countries attending have described what is happening in Gaza as genocide, which Israel has rejected. It is not clear whether the conference's participating countries have enough influence over Israel to force it to change its policies in Gaza, where more than 58,300 people have been killed in Israeli military operations. They followed a deadly Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, that killed about 1,200 people. The conference is co-chaired by the governments of South Africa and Colombia. South Africa in late 2023 filed a case with the ICJ, accusing Israel of committing genocide. Colombia in May last year cut relations with Israel in response to the Gaza war, and has requested to join South Africa's ICJ case. Colombia's vice minister for foreign affairs, Mauricio Jaramillo, said on Monday that the nations taking part in the Bogota meeting, which also include Qatar and Turkey, will be discussing diplomatic and judicial measures that can put more pressure on Israel to stop its attacks. Mr Jaramillo described Israel's conduct in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank as an affront to the international order. 'This is not just about Palestine,' he told reporters. 'It is about defending international law … and the right to self-determination.' Ms Albanese's comments and her attendance at the event come after the US imposed sanctions against her over her efforts to have the ICC take action against US and Israeli officials, companies and executives. The move came after a February executive order by US President Donald Trump placed sanctions on the ICC and anyone assisting its work.

Netanyahu left in precarious position as two ultra-Orthodox parties withdraw from his coalition
A second ultra-Orthodox group has withdrawn from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ruling coalition this week, leaving him holding on to power with the minimum number of seats required, multiple news outlets reported on Tuesday. The Agudat Yisrael faction withdrew on Tuesday, leaving Netanyahu's coalition with 61 seats in the Knesset out of a total of 120 seats, while the Degel HaTorah faction withdrew on Monday. Both groups withdrew in protest against a bill not being drafted to exempt ultra-Orthodox Jews from military service. The Shas party - also an ultra-Orthodox party - is threatening to withdraw on Thursday. If this happens, it would lead to the collapse of the Netanyahu government and trigger elections.
