The 97-point score was bestowed by an august group of judges, comprising mostly Master Sommeliers and Masters of Wine. "Winning a Gold or Platinum award at DWWA can literally change a producer's life," said DWWA judge and Master of Wine Tim Marson. The judges noted that Echolands' Blue Mountain Vineyard Cabernet Franc has, "an unrivalled purity of fruit: black cherry, berry and plum with a distinctive earthy, herbaceous tone. Mouth-filling and appetising with lustrous tannins and a beam of juicy acidity which undulates towards the long, smoky finish."
Celebrating its 22nd edition, the Decanter World Wine Awards remain the world's largest and most influential wine competition. This year, wines from 57 countries were evaluated by 248 top international experts, including 22 Master Sommeliers and 72 Masters of Wine – the most in the competition's history.
Though Frost and the Echolands team rely primarily upon their own vines for their fruit, there are special places in Walla Walla Valley that offer distinct expressions with certain grapes. "Blue Mountain Vineyard is a beautiful vineyard that is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Mountains and that is cooler than vineyards on the valley floor," Frost says. "That alone accounts for the lovely tension that we taste in the Cabernet Franc we buy from them. But it's an impeccably managed vineyard as well."
Echolands buys a select amount of fruit from a few neighboring vineyards, like the esteemed Blue Mountain Vineyard. "The Cabernet Franc that we pick at Blue Mountain Vineyard is really special," says winemaker Brian Rudin. "It's a complex and more aromatic version of the grape than you get from other, particularly warmer, sites," he says.
Walla Walla's famous Seven Hills Vineyard was the source for Echolands' Silver Medal-winning Seven Hills Vineyard Red 2020. Echolands' own Taggart Vineyard provided the Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon grapes for their Silver Medal-winning Albus Taggart Vineyard 2023.
Echolands Winery was founded in 2018 by renowned Master Sommelier and Master of Wine Doug Frost, in partnership with investor and conservationist Brad Bergman. Winemaker Brian Rudin manages the winery's 24-acre Taggart Vineyard on the Oregon side of the Walla Walla Valley, as well as the Echolands Estate Vineyard's 28 acres of vines on the Washington side of the valley. This is the first proprietary winery project for wine consultant and writer Doug Frost, one of only four people in the world to hold both the Master of Wine and Master Sommelier titles.

What to Eat at D.C.'s Top Tennis Tournament
A record count of Michelin-starred restaurants — seven in all – will serve at the Mubadala Citi DC Open. The week-long event at Rock Creek Tennis Center (Saturday, July 19-Sunday, July 27) — the only combined men's and women's 500-level tennis tournament in the world — draws more than 70,000 fans each year to the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center (5220 16th Street NW). After debuting at the then-named Citi Open in 2023, three-Michelin-starred Inn at Little Washington returns with truffle popcorn from chef and proprietor Patrick O'Connell (still only available in the Citi Lounge and suites only, however). Nick Stefanelli of NoMa's Masseria plates Italian cuisine, and chefs Miguel Guerra and Tatiana Mora of newly starred Mita will serve polished vegetable dishes. Others offering off-court delights include Albi's James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Rafidi, Spanish celebrity chef José Andrés's cooling gazpacho for the hot tennis nights, and chef Jeremiah Langhorne of The Dabney, who plans to prep his mid-Atlantic catfish sandwiches on sweet potato rolls. Tickets, starting in the $30s, are still available. Green turf-lined Market Square remains where the majority of the food action takes place. Returning favorites around the DMV includes King Street Oyster Bar (lobster rolls), Roaming Rooster (hot Nashville fried chicken sandwiches), and Duke's Grocery (Proper Burger). There's also sweets from Dolcezza and Clayboy's Shaved Ice; and Ladurée will offer its macarons at a special stand outside the main stadium. Design Cuisine returns again as the tournament's concessionaire. The tourney isn't complete without its range of drinks, alcoholic and N/A. Over at the Tequila Lounge, sponsor Mi Campo Tequila teams up with D.C.-born Taco Bamba. Chef and owner Victor Albisu is a longstanding tennis fan, spotted in the stadium for several years. Maxwell Frost: 20 House Republicans a ‘no' on ‘big, beautiful bill'
House Democrats are trying to delay passage of President Trump's mammoth tax and spending measure because 'about 20 Republicans' currently oppose the bill and more may join them as pressure mounts, Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) said Tuesday evening. 'They can only lose three or four [votes], and it's done,' Frost told MSNBC's Jen Psaki in an interview after the Senate narrowly passed the 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act' following a marathon debate and efforts to tamp down pushback from moderate Republicans in the GOP-controlled upper chamber. Frost said discussions are ongoing with moderates and ultra conservative House Republicans who have spoken out about various provisions of the bill, which would extend the tax cuts from Trump's first term while cutting funding for social safety net programs like Medicaid and food stamps, but he argued GOP members on both fronts seem to 'always fold.' 'They put up a little fight, so that way they have some footage that they can put behind their ads during election time, and then they fold right away,' Frost said. 'Sometimes they stick to it, so we'll see.' 'But the most important conversations — the most impactful ones — are actually [with] constituents and the people reaching out, and that's why the big strategy right now is delay,' he added. The House returned to the Capitol on Wednesday to hash out disagreements over the Senate version of the bill, as House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), Trump and Republican allies push for its passage by their self-imposed deadline Friday. The House narrowly passed its own version of the bill in May after Trump, Vice President Vance and Republican leaders pressured skeptical members to send the bill to the Senate so debate could continue while racing toward the president's Independence Day deadline. Frost told Psaki on Tuesday that it's imperative for Democrats, aided by public pressure, to kill the 'horrible bill' and he views time as their biggest advantage. 'Every minute we keep this bill from passing, it becomes even more unpopular, and every minute we keep it from passing, that means there's more people going to the district offices, calling the offices in D.C., sending letters, protesting, reaching on social media,' Frost said. 'When that compiles, we get to the point where hopefully many of these members will stick to it and vote 'no,' and that's our goal,' he continued.
