Paul Felder criticizes Ilia Topuria for preferring vacating over fighting Arman Tsarukyan
Felder was particularly talking about UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC), who said he'd vacate the title before fighting Arman Tsarukyan (23-3 MMA, 9-2 UFC).
Felder acknowledges it may be gamesmanship by Topuria, but can't help but be baffled by this mindset.
"The guy's the No. 1 contender," Felder said of Tsarukyan on the "Believe You Me" podcast. "And to say that you would rather relinquish the belt than fight him is? Come on, man. We're getting a little carried away. We've talked about this before where these guys in this generation of fighters, when they get to this top position now, are so willing to jump around weight classes and and try to deny fighting guys.
"It's like, that's not how it f*cking works, man! If the guy's No. 1 and the UFC says, 'This is the guy,' you're the champ. You're holding that belt. That's who you fight. If you're the best and he's not on your level and all this kind of stuff, then prove it! Just go out there and prove it. I hate that, and I'm not saying that I think that he doesn't think he could beat him."
Granted, Tsarukyan will likely have to fight one more time after withdrawing from his title fight against Islam Makhachev at UFC 311 in January. Topuria recently said he thinks his first title defense will be against either Justin Gaethje or Paddy Pimblett, but Felder is irked by "El Matador" ruling Tsarukyan out of the equation.
"I hate it. I was like, come on, man, here we go," Felder said. "Here we go again. Now you've got a champion who's just looking for the biggest thing. Look, the UFC is not going to try to put you in a position that's not going to be a big thing."

Diego Lopes responds to Jean Silva's 'very silly' comments questioning identity
Jean Silva has had a lot to say about Diego Lopes in the buildup to their main event bout next month. Silva, who was born and fights out of Brazil, has been questioning Lopes' national identity, stating that he plans on beating up "on a guy that doesn't know if he's Mexican or Brazilian" ahead of Noche UFC on Sept. 13 in San Antonio. Lopes was born in Manaus, Brazil, but has been living and fighting out of Puebla, Mexico for a decade. He walks out with both the Mexican and Brazilian flags for his UFC fights and been very vocal about his love for Mexico, and feeling identified with the country. While many fans have embraced Lopes (27-7 MMA, 6-2 UFC) as a representative for both Mexico and Brazil, Silva (16-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC) has taken issue with that. "I find that very silly," Lopes told MMA Junkie in Spanish reacting to Silva's comments. "Apart from it all, we're in a sport that's global. If we were in the Olympics, where you have to literally represent your country, OK, fine. But that's not the case in MMA. Believe me: I've been hearing this nonsense for so many years from people like, 'Oh, he's not Mexican. He's not Brazilian.' I've heard it from both sides, from Hispanic people to Brazilians. It's all good. I don't care. I know the people who support me and that are with me. I remember the people who were with me when I literally had nothing. I let people talk. One thing is certain, though: The day of the fight I will walk out with the flag of Brazil and Mexico – whether they like it or not. It's that simple." Lopes – who fought for the UFC featherweight title this past April, losing to Alexander Volkanovski – is not paying much mind to Silva's comments. Not only has he heard them before from fellow UFC contender Yair Rodriguez, but he's also not interested in engaging in online beefs. "I don't like to be talking on the internet. I did with 'El Pantera (Rodriguez),' but he looked for it, and then he didn't want to fight," Lopes said. "Jean Silva is talking bad about me, and that's fine. He's trying a lot of things, and even saying that I disrespected him, but to this day, I'm still trying to understand when I disrespected him. I saw an interview come out where he was like, 'Oh, no. I think maybe I got things confused, and this is all childish, but I'm going to break him anyway.' that's fine if he wants to sell the fight that way. It doesn't affect me in any way."

Belal Muhammad: Din Thomas 'way off' with comments about Khamzat Chimaev winning UFC title
Belal Muhammad has a strong opposing viewpoint from Din Thomas on Khamzat Chimaev becoming UFC middleweight champion. Thomas told MMA Junkie that if Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) dethrones Dricus Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) at UFC 319 on Aug. 16 (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+), it would be a disaster for the promotion. Thomas expressed concern over Chimaev's activity and reliability as champion. Muhammad heavily disagrees with that notion. "I don't know what the fudge Din Thomas is talking about, but I think he's way off on this one," Muhammad said on his YouTube channel. "I think it'll be one of the biggest things for the UFC if Chimaev wins the belt. I think he'll probably be one of the biggest stars, superstars the UFC has. He's already a star. He already has that invincible aura about him. I think it's only going to get bigger, especially if he goes out there and dominates Dricus, who's on a hot streak, and I think he can." The former UFC welterweight champion is not only picking Chimaev to beat Du Plessis, but he's rooting for him. "I think he can go out there and finish him dominantly, or even like Khabib said, just strike with him," Muhammad continued. "I think he can outstrike him. I think he'll make it look easy if he keeps it on the feet. Yeah, Dricus has a chin, he has cardio, he has an awkward style, he has toughness, but I think Chimaev is a lot cleaner. "If he keeps it standing, I think he'll be able to keep that pace the whole five rounds and even hurt him. He's shown a lot of his power, and he's shown that he's working hard. He's only going to get stronger at 185. I do think he can do it dominantly. I know Din Thomas said he won't be as active, but I think a lot of it just comes from not being able to get in the U.S. Now he's in the U.S. He's been training in L.A."

Nassourdine Imavov explains declining UFC 319 backup: Caio Borralho 'taking my leftovers'
Nassourdine Imavov confirms he declined the UFC 319 title fight backup slot, but says it was for quality reasons. With his UFC Fight Night 258 main event on the horizon, Imavov (16-4 MMA, 8-2 UFC) doesn't see much reward in traveling across the world, battling jet lag and cutting weight, only to likely not even fight in the end. He initially agreed to fill the role when it seemed the impending title fight between Dricus Du Plessis and Khamzat Chimaev would happen in late Spring or early Summer. But after the timeline pushed, Imavov declined. Even the Sept. 2 showdown vs. Caio Borralho in Paris, he views as a bit of a placeholder, though a necessary one. "I was like, 'OK, if the title fight is in August and I have to be the backup, then I don't want to train for nothing. I don't want to train for nothing,'" Imavov told MMA Junkie on Tuesday through a French-language interpreter. "... So I was like, 'Maybe it's better to focus on Caio Borralho.' The UFC asked us a few weeks ago for me to come in the U.S. for the weigh-ins and everything. I said no because I have a fight that's scheduled three weeks later. So I don't have time to travel and have jet lag. I want to be in the best condition for my fight. That's why I said, 'No, I won't come. Maybe they'll put Caio at this place.' But right now, I'm only focusing on Caio in Paris. Bring him." Borralho (17-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC) instead will weigh in Aug. 15 in Chicago. He proudly revealed the backup fighter designation himself on social media. To Imavov, the designation is no accolade, however. "For me, it's his problem," Imavov said. "He agreed to that because he was honored to be the backup, but he's just taking my leftovers because I declined. Otherwise, if I hadn't declined, the UFC wouldn't call him to be the backup. He has to understand this. In my mind, I hope he won't use it as excuses or dodge the fight. I will be ready Sept. 6 and he has to be ready. Because he has spoken a lot. No excuses. "Even for me, being the backup for a title shot it's not an honor for me. Because when I want to fight for the title, I want to have my face on the poster. Because what's he going to do? He's going to make weight and be in another (city) there in Chicago. No one will speak about him. He doesn't have any road at the end of the day and everyone will forget after the fight happens because Khamzat and DDP and everyone will forget Caio was the backup. It's something that doesn't have any sense. No one is speaking about the backup fighter." Title eliminator – no question, affirms Imavov Imavov says without question, if he gets through Borralho, he'll be the next UFC middleweight title challenger. He says the UFC has told him as much. A win would make it five victories in a row over top-10 opponents since February 2024. Other victories in the stretch include Roman Dolidze, Jared Cannonier, Brendan Allen, and Israel Adesanya. "It's very simple: I'm a complete fighter," Imavov said. "I consider myself as a complete fighter. So if it has to go to the ground, it'll go to the ground. I will welcome him to the ground. If it stays standing, it will be (better) and I will just demolish him. The thing is that I don't speak too much but when I fight, I want to bring a real show to my fans." "... He just wants to win the fight in this way, having a weird fight, a not interesting fight. That's not how I'm used to doing. For me, I'll make this fight in spectacular fashion. It's important for me to show people that I can make a boring fighter, a great fight."
